Title: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Unreal on August 31, 2009, 11:14:50 PM
Sup, newcomers. New to Majora's Mask? Discovered something and want to know if it's old? Need some tips on speedrunning/routes/etc? You got questions, we got answers.

I have some questions, all of which arose today

1) I was able to walk into the curiosity shop right before 10. When I walked in, it was still 9 for about a half second. Is that like a one frame window or something because I've never been able to do it before.
2) On my 100% complete file, Navi said "shouldn't you see the fairy in north clock town? you only have x hours left." Is this a side effect of duplicating a bottle over the ocarina?
I had another question but I forgot.

1.) Yes, (I'm pretty sure at least)

2.) Yes, that is one of the several side effects from duping a bottle over the ocarina.

What are the other side effects? I thought nothing happened when you put hsw in it

Termina Field has no actors in it, only grass.

Also if you play Oath to Order(Ocarina on B) you can't go to the Moon, it just warps you to Termina Field.

But that has nothing to do with HSW, just that the game checks if you are in the first cycle, by checking if you have the ocarina.

I just remembered my other question:

for some reason, I can't shield when I go oob to get curiosity shop early (but in all other instances of oob it's possible for me to hover). Why? I can get in without it.

After you shoot the hookshot you need to let go of Z then hit Z again before you shield.

Well, I was going to ask if it was impossible to isg the scarecrow after the first time you talk to him as you enter a room (I tried for 5 minutes each time and I only got it right after I walked in).

However, I'm not so sure anymore because I was recording a Snowhead run (and I was 5 seconds ahead of my previous run). And I just could not get the ISG on the bomb to hover to the snowballs. It took me 7 bombs. And I actually got a good Goht battle afterwards... damn.

Edit: Goht just ruined another good run of mine. Is there a certain position where he absolutely cannot hit you?

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Unreal on September 09, 2009, 04:49:26 AM
It doesn't matter where you stand since his blasts are random. I have best luck along the snow lining right under that middle cell looking window thing. <_< But yeah, just line up somewhere under that cell window thing and you'll have good luck there.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Lexkeeta on September 11, 2009, 02:39:03 AM
Ok, I'm convinced. Getting the ISG on the scarecrow after the first time you talk to him upon entering is impossible. I get the ISG on anything about 90% of the time on my first slash, and I can't get it after the first time (on trading post scarecrow non-song if it matters).

Also that backflip ss trick jiano is too good. I can get the ss almost everytime. Is there a timing trick on when to shield when doing a backwalking SS? That'd help a ton.

Right when the bomb starts to flash fast (the 4th/5th flash), drop the bomb, back up like 2 steps then roll.

How come the ESS-in-place thing (as outlined in the Recoil Jump page) doesn't work sometimes? Like, at random times during the game I'll be able to do it consistently and do a perfect recoil jump, other times though it's simply impossible to get that ESS part. Is there a trick to this or am I just messed up?

edit: Oh, that's my first post? Guess I've been lurking too long..

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ZFG on January 10, 2010, 05:07:07 PM
Are you starting the ess in place while already in Z targeting?  That might be why.  Try letting go of Z and pressing it again quickly and it should get you into the ess in place.

is there another possibility what to do atfer the wrong warp glitch to snwohead?
because with it is really hard to time the ISG ... (and pause buffering doesn't work better ^^")

The only option is to ISG. The pause buffering method is guaranteed, I haven't failed it in a long time.

ok i went was falling down the cliff and now i went up with bomb hovering... but... i got no bombs for superslide anymore xP
is there still a way to get to the entrance?

edit: just if i would have bombs. i'm failing at superslide -_-
the only thing i'm activating when i try this, is ground jump xD

any differences between pal and ntsc there?

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Lexkeeta on January 23, 2010, 01:53:42 AM
1. you don't need to superslide, just stsnd on the edges when the wind blows and weave your way up

2. you're timing your superslides wrong. You have to be stand up from your roll right before it explodes. Any sooner or later will get you nothing.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: thiefbug on January 23, 2010, 10:05:19 AM
there is a little problem...
the wind blows into the other direction.
so it always blows me down the ramp if i'm not fast enough in a corner.
there is an edge i can stand. if i continue walking, it blows me down again.
i'm trying at the last edge to walk - sidehop and hover till the wind ends for a little while, sidehop running up and then to hover again.

i hope my explosives are enough for this...

Do it fast. that's pretty much it. you need to shield the chu not even a split second afterwards, pretty much do it at the same time

Okay thanks. And is there a better way of timing superslides-while-walking than what I've been doing (start backwalking, pull bomb, wait until 5th flash, drop bomb, step back, roll, shield, mash A)

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Lexkeeta on March 02, 2010, 07:57:07 PM
backwalk, press R at the fifth flash, wait 2 steps, and mash A.

hold back on the stick the entire time

the time to press r depends on your tastes. find what timing works and stick with it

got problems with that too... I test it this way - if i can fly above the coast without landing, I'm high enough... maybe it is crap, but this seems to me as a good method to test the height...

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Jiano on March 08, 2010, 10:19:04 PM
Yes. We use the turtle and use B -> A to make grabbing the ledge easier. If you get a flying zora off the turtle then you are guaranteed enough height.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: thiefbug on March 08, 2010, 10:40:17 PM
I'm confused...
when i jump off the turtle before i've played bossa nova, i can do flying zora... but i can't get enough height.
and when i played it, i'm unable to do flying zora =/

Hello. I'm new to this all about Zelda TASing. I've just been TASing Super Mario 64 before now, and I have recently uploaded one test (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh9SRSmsYCA) on Majora's Mask so far (more to come!). Well anyways, here's the questions:
1. Does Link need to be on a ledge/up against a wall to hover?
2. Does the Z-slide work in MM? If yes, then how?
3. Are there anything in general about MM I should know for TASing?

1. No
2. I'm pretty sure Z-sliding works but it's different than OOT. You'd have to ask one of the TAS dudes about that.
3. You should be doing HESSes as your main form of movement. Just look at all the techniques in the Majora's Mask section of the site.

1. Backflip, keep holding down(slightly left or right depending on which way you wanna go), and let go of Z immediately after you backflip.
2. Probably.

just a term question. i am wondering what people call the 2 deku palace guards gaurding the entrance to the palace (the ones you "should" need to talk to as deku link to pass). so if i wanted to look up a way to bombchu hover over him on youtube (i know how this is just an example), what would i use. searching deku palace guards bomb hover skip might turn up something about skipping the patrolling guards. thanks

Cause Supersliding is a moving Ground Jump, isn't it?
Just wondering.   ::)

I believe I found something new. In stone tower, the room after the mini-boss, I found you can use a blast mask recoil to clip, through the wiring, to the switch that summons the stray fairy chest. Is this new? And if so, would it be of any use in a 100%?

I used the stop time glitch with a bottle near a scarecrow and it started the prompt for teaching it a song. You can move around until you get to the song teaching part. You can also get the stop icon on b (works like a usual sword) and stays there until you talk to someone except the scarecrow, pause, or use the ocarina. Could there be any use for this?

And also, could someone explain to me how bottle adventure works in majora's mask?

Nope, the L press should do it. I always hold forward after the backflip, but I don't think that's needed, it's just force of habit.
Maybe you're not quick enough with the L press?

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Elminster on November 20, 2010, 12:12:11 AM
You have to retarget the wall one frame after the untargeted backflip. You're probably just not fast enough.

You can pause buffer gainers if you're having trouble getting one. They seem to be fickle for me; sometimes I can get them like 80% and then sometimes I'll try for 20 times or so without getting one. Basically, get against the wall while targeting it. Then buffer a backflip the next frame (let go of your target button). The frame after that, buffer your target button and push the control stick towards the wall.

For a chu just do a backflip then chu & then shield like you'd do in a hover but without infinite sword. The important thing is not to hold back on the control stick after the backflip. It's basically the same for bombs too.

For recoil flip, the stick direction are inverted. Hold forward to go backward, if you press left, Link will go to the right and vice-versa. A good place for practise is the updraft room of invertd stone tower temple.

You have to use each bombchu in quick succession to the previous in order to get off the ground. You're probably having trouble because you aren't using the second bombchu quick enough after using the first one, since using only one to get off the ground only allows you to momentarily float in the air (which is the time to use the second bombchu). It will probably take some practice. If nothing else you could also try staircase hover to get off the ground.

EDIT: I just found an' intresting Easy money route...i think it would help some non-TAS speedruns if they didint have enough money for chu's on the way over to the bomb shop....if u happen to get to clock town around 10 or so...you can go to the curiosity shop...if u have a bottle on u you could go to the trading post and get the fish thats on the left side of the bridge.....im doin it! lawl....i hope it helps!

Edit: I dont get the gainer....
1. Do u put ur back to the wall?
2. do u let go of z and like a milisecond later press and hold again?
3. BUT WHEN I LET GO OF Z, ITS STILL Z TARGETING!!! WTF?

By Staircase Hover he means you put two bombs on the ground, and hover off the explosions. This makes it so that you don't fall to the ground straight away, since you use two hovers.
Also, that thing about money. In both TAS and non-TAS speedruns, you get enough money from bottle dupe anyway.
Also, just get the Adult's Wallet. Then buy a bomb bag and 20 bombchu. You only need two bomb/chus to have a hover where you wont fall straight to the ground.

For Gainers
You want to face towards a wall that is too high for you to grab normally, but it grabbable if you Ground Jump/Gainer. Hold Z, then backflip and let go of z at the same time. Repress z very quickly.
This is by no means an easy trick, you only have 1 visual frame to repress the z button.

Ya, most people do gainers now, but since you still have to wait for midnight it doesn't make much of a difference.

That shouldn't happen in a run. If you aren't up there before 12 pm, then you lost time somewhere else and need more practice.

The mirror shield is skipped in the Any%... so I guess you could just get the Light Arrows and use those to get the Mirror Shield without having to go through the well.

Though practice does help the most there are a few tips. If doing a backflip to drop the bomb, hold back while preforming the backflip. This will keep you from being too close to the bomb where the "grab" icon is present. Roll just a bit after the bomb's flashing begins to speed up and double tap, of mash, "A" a few times to insure that Link attempts to grab the bomb after rolling. Practicing with two bombs instead of one can also help with timing. Practice is the best way.

First thing first, never listen to razor. Ever.

Now that that's out of the way, superslides do take practice, but they are easy to do once you know how; you have a 12 input frame window which is pretty substantial.
Don't bother learning a standing superslide, it's pointless. To start, try a backwalk superslide. Simply backwalk and pull out a bomb, shield while still backwalking after the fourth flash, then hold forward and mash A (Keep Z held the entire time (or L on Gamecube)).

That said, supersliding isn't as important as hovering, you should master that first.

12 explosive method is pretty useless; you should try using the new(ish) 8 explosive method that kyoki found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfG6DspgNkk&feature=channel_video_title

It's faster and easier than pretty much any other method. Just sidehop and hold back after the last chu hover, then hold up-right when you land in the water. There's also a 5 explosive method but that's a bit more difficult and not worth it outside of a segmented run IMO.

How can I get good at no pause buffer megaflips? For the people that seem to be consistent with them, (ing or pokey or anyone else that is) do you guys like count seconds or something after you use a bomb? It seems near impossible to time a roll at between the 6th and 7th flash. Then I hear there is also someway they can crash your game, how to I prevent this from happening?

Maybe people want to learn them so they don't have to make bomb shop trips that aren't needed? I know the parts of the actual game. Just because I made a forum account 20 minutes ago does not mean I am mindless. I just asked a simple question in a question and answer thread and your response was completely unnecessary.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread

You just need to have a feeling of when to roll. I personally use the sound of the bomb to help me time it. If you just practise them you'll get the timing down.

To prevent them from crashing flick your stick forward immediately after you input the backflip.

I didn't mean that to be offensive, but considering megaflips hardly ever cut bomb shop trips, I was saying there's really no reason to learn them.

As for learning the game, I mean, how and where to get X heart piece, the route to get the skulltulas in the spider houses, etc.

i highly doubt anyone has this completely perfected, so you can't just write it off lmao

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on April 20, 2011, 11:29:53 PM
I cut out 2 bomb shop trips and saved ~4 minutes in any% by doing unbuffered megaflips everywhere.

*pooped on*

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on April 21, 2011, 12:07:29 AM
of course, that doesn't help any if a) you can do any% in 3 trips, no megaflips b) that only pertains to any%, the rare exception, c) if you mess up a lot (which we all know you did) it's not really all that useful

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on April 21, 2011, 01:02:28 AM
a.) Doing any% in 3 trips no megaflips would be way harder and so much slower that you might as well take the extra 2 trips
b.) I can see a lot of goals where megaflips would be useful in cutting out bomb shop trips (e.g. odolwa's remains)
c.) I only fucked up a few megaflips in stone tower, and it was still faster than taking the bomb shop trip

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on April 21, 2011, 01:19:41 AM
a) i meant however many you used +1, i dont know the number
b) odolwas remains is a really short and dumb goal, but even other woodfall type goals like 100% completion or great spin do not necessarily benefit
c) how many times have you failed woodfall bk skip? or the hover to PF?

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on April 21, 2011, 02:46:35 PM
a.) Doing 4 bomb shop trips no megaflips would be way slower than 3 with megaflips
b.) Megaflips would save time in 100% - doing old school wrong warp with megaflips is way faster than doing zora long jump without
c.) Woodfall BK skip with megaflips is way easier than without IMO, and the hover to PF i've only ever failed because of the retarded fence in the way

Anyway let's just stop arguing about this, if you want to make one more point after this that's fine; I'm done with this discussion.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on April 21, 2011, 05:41:53 PM
a) "way" as in about a minute or 2, obviously this is only preferred for races
b) for 100% it's faster to just skip bomb bag completely
c) yet you fail it all the time

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on June 15, 2011, 10:25:40 PM
to zora clip you actually dont hold forward at all (although i guess you could)

hold b to take your fins out
while still holding, press Z or L to target (depending on version)
while holding both buttons, press A to jumpslash
keep holding B and you're through

if you talk to the guards it means you're too close

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on June 16, 2011, 12:54:22 AM
holding forward only changes your angle with boomerangs lol

if you just do the jumpslash while holding b as zora, you see him warp forward, you don't have to hold a direction

you are free to hold up if you want, but just know that it has absolutely nothing to do with clipping or helping you clip

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on June 16, 2011, 05:54:54 PM
even I have trouble with grabbing the ledge, but my consistency for it isn't bad at all

what I do is when starting the flying zora, go completely straight forward for the entirety of the first swim, then as he starts the next, go left, then after that, do the rest towards the platform

it's actually not that bad, just really hard to explain, even visually.. you need to get a feel for it yourself

if it helps, the swim has to be completely over in order to grab the ledge, if not you hit the wall

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on June 16, 2011, 07:15:28 PM
I have never had issues grabbing the ledge on N64 (although on VC the lag seems to make it way harder for some reason); my only problem is getting off the ground sometimes. For the second "burst" where you hold left, make sure you're holding up-left instead of directly left, otherwise it fucks up the whole thing.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on June 17, 2011, 03:05:10 AM
heh, today grunz taught me the pro way to do flying zora ledge grab, that never fails ;)

basically as you do my set up, as soon as you start mashing A, swim directly to the right side of the platform (like just one straight line there

at the last swim (you'll know cuz you'll be close to the wall) press b once while it buffers (where he flips before the swim, that entire window) then press A a small bit before you hit the wall

it's really easy, i can get around to making a full tutorial if you like, cuz this is prob the most asked question out there

2) did you warp inside the temple or just outside the entrance
3) did you come from the entrance of snowhead before hovering
4) did you fall into the abyss and then "warp"

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread

you know you're far enough when the background changes

personally after zora long jump i go 4 up, then angle change and go 6 chus back, 7 when i want to be safe, towards the widest part of the unloaded ff (if you go straight instead it takes many more explosives)

Keeta is it possible for even one time for you to just leave a discussion about megaflips alone? All I have ever seen you do is argue with people - no matter what subject it is, you always find some way to argue with someone about it, and you never let it go when other people are long done talking about the subject. It's really annoying, and you're just making yourself look really stupid (assuming you're not trolling... which I'm pretty sure you are).

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread

this discussion had nothing to do with megaflips

stop trying to confuse new people, they can learn megaflips after more important things are taken care of

and if i'm right, this guy is going through the 100% route, which i guarantee has no megaflips or any use for them

Kaztalek, that method is really hard and unnecessary. Why are you mashing A? Timing the presses for the bursts is not difficult at all, in fact you can "buffer" each A button press by simply holding A while link is going through the "burst" animation. The B+A to grab the ledge is also completely unnecessary, and the timing is pretty strict for it. I'm making a tutorial of the easier way to do this trick...

If I was gonna pick between those I would pick Kaztalek's method because I like mashing buttons and learning a B and then A button press sounds a lot easier than a precise swim over to the platform.

Keep in mind, that video is a clip taken directly from my any% SS run, so I probably took some extra time lining it up to make sure that it worked.

Either way, it doesn't matter which method you use; I personally find my method easier, maybe you find yours easier. I'm not going to let another argument start about this, so let's just agree to disagree at this point.

EDIT: @rg that swim is not precise at all; once you get off the ground it's pretty much guaranteed to work as long as you grab the platform at the right spot.

um.. ok but i'm not the one who brought out the competition

by the way if you swim right towards the platform, after pressing b for the last swim, press a before it starts and you'll grab.. the easiest of them all

however for the sake of my tutorial i realize people will be swimming all over the place, so considering you can grab absolutely anywhere on the platform in any point of your swim seems a bit more learn-friendly

i will say that i have used that old method a lot back in the day and it worked a lot, personally i would swim too far left at the start or hold a too long when buffering or other stupid things without paying attention.

try the new way if u want, you might like

If I get the right angle leaving the water I do this, otherwise I fly to the right of the platform and turn into it on the last swim with B->A.. if that makes sense. Seems to help me get it almost every time.

Ya I actually noticed that too after making the tutorial, except it's better to use the left side. Fly to the left of the platform, press B while you flip, then when ready press A and hold right.

I still prefer flying directly there, personally.

Any tips as far as the timing goes for isgslide? after a couple weeks of practice cycles im just not getting any better.

What im doing right now is.

1)isg
2)backwalk a few steps and sheild drop
3)couple more steps, hold forward spam a
4)"fuck"
5)sadly backwalk to my destination

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on June 29, 2011, 05:56:52 PM
depends on how you get isg

i always get it by doing 2 stabs, so i do that, then shield drop as soon as the bomb is picked up while backwalking, then roll towards it as soon as i'm a good bit behind

after some practice you'll rarely fail it

If you can 1 stab ISG, shield drop backflip when you get ISG then wait like half a second and roll into the bomb while mashing A. Both ways are probably just as good.

Yeah I have always done 1 stab for ISG and getting used to the timing for 2 stabs is really weird. I'll try that, thanks.

When I was fooling around with hovering, I've manged to unlock the camera with a Chu, changed the angel without locking the camera, I made link face the screen then backfliped and hovered with the camera unlocked. I did this just as I said but I had little pressure to the joy stick so he could stand in place. Then, I flicked the stick up and back flipped to hover. Is this old?
Yes.
Also, you don't need to bump a stickied thread >_>

Not that we know of. The loading zone for Woodfall Temple is probably created when you play Sonata of Awakening.

You have to Z target something while hovering. (Preferably a chu but an enemy or person will do.)

What playe said.
Also note that you have to hold slightly up-left or up-right, return to neutral then hold the direction you want to face.
Or as an alternative you could hold slightly up-left or up-right, roll, then hit the direction you want right as the roll ends.

About movement speeds. Is constant Zora-diving the fastest way to swim (apart from supersliding of some sorts)? I watched the former ZMM TAS by mukki the other day, and I found it a little odd the way he swam to to PH. He swims for 2 seconds or so, and dives, and it seems too somehow lack a flow in the movement.

I believe the actual movement is called "dolphin-diving" and yes it is the fastest form of movement aside from super-swimming.

So you ought to dive continously if you want to swim the fastest. And the swimming in the obsoleted TAS isn't sensible as optimized movement.

About Virtual Console, are there different versions of the game? I read "NTSC VC" somewhere somewhat indicating that there are different versions. So when I a european, download MM to play it on Wii, which version do I get?

PAL VC which will run about 5/6ths of the speed of NTSC VC

Well the difference is a a lot more than "a bit harder" for me. I just bashed three megaflips in a row on the gamecube version and generally get them once every two or three tries, went back to PAL VC and with 20 bombs couldn't get a single one. it seems whenever i get the timing that would result in a megaflip on the gamecube version, link just recoil flips instead gaining no height or distance as ISG is on. Personally i think the timing is just a lot harder on PAL 'cos i was getting them instantly on the gamecube version unless there's someone who's consistent with megaflips on the PAL version who begs to differ.

well i've always played on PAL VC so my timing for things like HESS was PAL timing, i only played on gamecube to see if i still can't megaflip on that version.

I used to be consistant with megaflips on PAL.

Fair enough then i guess i have no idea then, if i'm the only one who has trouble with PAL megaflips must be something i'm doing.

Well, I was already well practised with the megaflip timing because I had played GC before my disc broke, then I had to go to pal vc. It's very possible that the backflip is frame perfect on pal; that might be the trouble you're having with it. I can't be bothered going to test it, though.

It's because you're not unloading the big wheel room.
The backflip at 00:20, you need to make sure you're holding back during it. Also, you should be higher at that point before you do the backflip; end your 5th hover earlier, or you wont get to unload the main room.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread

Depends on who you're talking to, all versions are almost the same  (I say this 'cause GC has a few random glitches that're fixed but don't effect speed-running and 'cause JPN N64/VC have major differences to the US version.) just with differences in lag and loading time with the exception of VC which has screwed up sensitivity. (Yet it has the least amount of lag and loading time so generally this is the fastest version.)

I personally am probably going to prefer the N64 version of the game once I get it in a few days so I'd encourage people to play on N64.

And there's actually two methods of getting up there, one with a backflip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFfEeF0Xhv4) and one with a Gainer. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XPUqqmjix0)

The best version to play on for Majora's Mask is the Virtual Console version because it is the fastest version. If you play any other version, your time will be worse. (Not by too much, though. For example, you lose about 1-2 minutes in an any% run)

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on December 02, 2011, 11:05:38 PM
VC is the fastest version of MM to speedrun on, but the sensitivity on the control stick is really bad compared to on N64 (aiming and ESS are generally considered way harder on VC than on N64). VC saves about 1 minute and 30 seconds in an any% run (obviously not exactly that since lag is variable, but that's the closest estimate we have for right now).

For those curious about the 1:30 figure:
-37 seconds from loading times (0.3 seconds per loading zone on average with 125 loading zones in the current any% route)
-23 seconds from cutscene lag (darkeye timed this a while back)
-About 10 seconds from faster text in first cycle (this is nowhere near exact since slight differences in mashing speed could make up to 1-2 seconds difference here)
-11 seconds from faster unpauses (N64 unpauses are always exactly 19 input frames longer than VC ones). This is assuming you use a lot more pauses than N64 for lullaby skip ISG or don't buffer it on either (VC would generally want to advance 1 frame at a time since the unpause is so fast that the game's video output can't keep up with it)
-Around 12 seconds from explosion lag (this is a horrible estimate; explosion lag is extremely variable and the number of explosives used can vary. I assumed about 1/10 second explosion lag based on timing a few and taking the average and assumed 120 explosives used which is the max you would ever use in the current route. Obviously 12 seconds is probably a huge overestimation.)
-The rest of the lag is negligable, since faster playing can easily cancel out the tiny bit of lag there is (deku palace can be done just as fast on N64 as on VC despite all the lag there for example), and VC actually lags MORE in some areas such as Zora Cape.

I timed all of this VERY extensively in Sony Vegas over the past few months (with the exception of the explosive lag obviously), so it should be pretty accurate. If someone knowledgable like darkeye wants to look this over, go ahead; it's always possible I missed something.

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Kaztalek on December 03, 2011, 12:22:12 AM
the best version of mm to use is the one you feel comfortable with, as the time differences aren't very noticeable and don't make much of a difference in races

Title: Re: Majora's Mask - Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on December 03, 2011, 01:03:21 AM
Yeah, I really doubt MM VC is ever gonna make that much of a difference outside of segmented runs and ILs. Even in single segment runs, an improvement is usually gonna be way more than just a minute and a half in gameplay quality over the previous run, so either way the run with better play quality will win out. Even if an improvement is less than 1:30, it'll probably be lower enough that we can safely say it's not a better run. MM VC is not anywhere near the overpowered monstrosity people used to make it out to be. Hell, OoT VC probably saves way more time than MM VC does, and people still manage to compete no problem in OoT with N64.

You don't want to be megaflipping until you know everything else and to do a hess you have to roll on the first blue frame after the 6th flash and hold the ess position and then press z after a second

allright but what is ess position?

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on December 16, 2011, 08:08:47 PM
Megaflips should be one of the last things you learn; make sure you know how to do isg + hovers + superslides + etc. before you start learning things like HESS and megaflips (the latter of which is really only useful in any% and in some races).

HESS is not worth trying on VC IMO because the ESS position is too small and it's way too hard to change directions without pausing.

ESS position is a ring around the control stick that when held causes Link to start shuffling his feet.

1. How do you get passed the updraft room in Stone Tower Temple without the deku mask? I've seen videos of it, but I am unable to pass the second set of updrafts. I either screw up the recoil-sidehop  (I just use a bombchu for the first jump, but I'm to close to the wall to use a bombchu for the second), or I go flying through the first updraft but land in the lava before I reach the second.

2. Are there any more consistent ways to duplicate bottles? I can usually get one or two on my first try, but I always screw one up and end up needing to go find a fish so I can try again.

3. Is HESS or ESSing very important to a speedrun? I can hit normal superslides without too much effort (still takes me a couple bombs), but I cannot manage to do any variations. I`m playing on the virtual console, as my N64 controllers are broken and I can`t find any replacements.

For the updraft room, make sure you put the top of the clock's right side against the right side of the updraft (look at my run to see what I mean by that). Then just turn around, recoil sidehop left, and hold left until you land.

Bottle duplication can be made much easier if you dupe one bottle normally, then go catch a fish in your extra bottle and drop it in front of the guy before talking to him to dupe again. This will extend the window from 1 frame to about 10 seconds (or however long it takes for the fish to disappear). Once you've replaced the bottle on your c button, walk away from the stand to finish the dupe.

HESS isn't important in a speed run unless you're going for a world record, and even then only on the N64 version. VC is just too sensitive for ESS in general to be worth it.

What is the difference between (Hyper) Extended Superslide and (Hyper) Infinite Superside? I haven't quite got the distinction between those, and which is which. So I would like a clear and somewhat easy understandable explanation.

Extended superslide and infinite superslide are two different names for the same thing.

Just a quick one:

What are the inputs for the time stop glitch? I'm trying to get on the block at the top of Stone Tower.

Do I press the button for the bottle, then shield straight away?

You hold Z, then press R and press bottle a split second later.

Extended superslide and infinite superslide are two different names for the same thing.

So it's just inconsistency in the use of terms. It would avoid confussion then to only use one term besides extended don't mean the same as infinite. Which abbreviation shall we use and is the generally accepted one?

For the lullaby skip, are there any tricks to getting the superslide consistently, or reliable methods of timing it? Obviously, you have to practice it a lot, but I'd like to make sure I'm practicing correctly.

Generally you want to use extended to anyone except Swordless, with him try to remember to say infinite ;)

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on May 09, 2012, 07:11:44 PM
Yeah most people say extended; infinite doesn't make a lot of sense as a name since superslide is already infinite.

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: mzxrules on May 10, 2012, 04:47:56 AM
Yes but you can't "extend" infinity, so that makes no sense either.

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: ING-X on May 10, 2012, 11:21:23 AM
Well it extends the superslide after you manually end it, so...

Also, the name "extended" makes no sense for HESS since you don't even start a superslide to start it. :-\

What if we let the E stand for something else, like eternal superslide or everlasting superslide? Then we have the technique neamed HESS and that's it.

Hi ZSR,

I'm not a speedrunner but I'm a fan of your work and lurk this site frequently.
I never completed MM and stopped watching the speedrun half way through because I wanted to finish the game

My n64 doesn't work properly so I'm looking for a mid game save file for the emulator version, google didn't help. So I figured ZSR community was the best place to ask since you guys probably have loads of saves as you practice various sections all the time

I'd completed swamp and snow, with a few extra masks maybe some extra hearts - average playthrough status probably. Just retrieved the hookshot at the pirate camp and picked up a zora egg, that's where I'm at. I don't know what to do now (and don't want to know) but if someone could help me out or direct me anywhere they might have save for this, I'd be very happy!

Thank you so much for any help :)

Just watch the world record run by EnNopp112. If you're looking for a more simple route with fewer megaflips and more lenient bomb management (also english) you might want to watch my any% run, though I'm sure others do the same but in a faster way. I kind of just watched half of GoronGuy's tutorial and Indextic taught me the rest, so my routing might be kind of weird.

You face downright and start doing neutral B sword slashes, after 7 of those you quickly get ISG from a bomb.
Im not sure if its JP only or not.

E:It might actually be riskier on U and E because you dont respawn to the FF entrance like in the J version.

It's JP only. In English you will be blown off the cliff, so buffering ISG is the safest method.

doubt it

What is the least number of explosives you can do the Woodfall BK Skip in?

I was watching GoronGuy's 1:41 run and noticed that when buying bombs, he bought 20 chus and 10 bombs with 99 rupees. The price of those would be 110 rupees. How is that possible? Do you have to buy the bombs quickly?

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: mmFruit on October 12, 2013, 10:03:15 PM
with 99 rupees you can buy 10b 20c, because if you mash A pretty quickly when buying bombchus, the rupee counter when buying your first pack of chus will be over 40 when buying the second pack of 10c.

How about this question...

In the English Any% route, Is it quicker to Skip the Giants Cutscene in the Great Bay Temple or is it quicker to watch the cutscene ? If we skipped the cutscene we would have to buy more bombs and chus and soar back to the Zora Cape. I'm curious because in Goron Guy's run he did not skip the cutscene.

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: GoronGuy on October 14, 2013, 09:32:36 PM
Skipping the GBT cutscene would be slower considering you usually needs explosives afterwards and it would take too long to store SoDT due to the fact that you'd have to clip twice.

In Japanese we do GBT first, meaning that's where we get Oath.

As for English, It would just be a lot slower than just watching it as the 2nd giants cutscene is not very long and we need explosives for lullaby skip which is done right after GBT.

Also for future things you should look to VPP or Ennopp as reference. My stuff is really outdated lol

Hi everyone, i switched on VC but i've got a problem, when i tried the song storage it didnt work, i mean, i succeeded the hovering then i pressed C button (ocarina), but instead of using it, i'm was falling like a rock although i didnt have any problem yet when i was on pj 1.7.

I wonder if my setting (any region) are ok or not, i unabled japan games but i kept everything else in the original location and language.

The thing is i dont really know what version i have either, i was looking for this game in .wad but in all the jap roms i've found the problem remains.
If you have any idea where does it come from or if u give me a link (verified) to download majoras mask 1.0 (jap).wad, it would be great.

(by the way i own the game but in PAL)

thanks.

(update, i think i have 1.1 because goht dont throw link away like this: http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/6628/gohtdifferences.png

so i need a link to get the 1.0 jap, much appreciated)

Actually, I'm fairly sure you don't want the J 1.0 wad. It's generally worse than 1.1 - you have to manually push Mikau to the shore as there is no 'Grab' option, which is much more time consuming and tedious.
When you are pulling the ocarina in the hover, are you holding a direction on the joystick while you mash for the ocarina? Pulling the ocarina without doing this causes link to simply fall without any interesting effect.

Im almost done learning any%, but there are still some things stopping me, twinmold and majora. I feel like whenever I go into twinmold I get hit and die, or I run out of arrows. I can learn to aim with practice, but how can I stop getting hit by twinmold? They just seem to run right into me and there's little I can do to stop it.

Kill twinmold before they start "trolling" you

Hello, I'm having some trouble with the Snowhead BK skip. Whenever I attempt it, I line up my angle, I do the recoil flip, and hold right. But I simply don't seem to clip out of bounds. I don't think my problem lies in the recoil flip because I've done plenty of those successfully before. I've even tried pause buffering this one although that doesn't seem to have any affect as i still don't clip out. So some questions:
Do I need ISG?
Is the timing of the recoil Flip precise?
What exact direction should I be holding after the recoil flip?

If anyone can get back to me on this that'd be great!

Hold up-right, not just right, and you should clip and hit the loading zone.

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: mmFruit on January 20, 2014, 10:23:13 PM
- you need a somewhat good recoil flip to have enough speed (not a perfect one or anything)
- it doesnt work if you have isg, bc then you cant recoil flip
- after the recoil flip hold up-right

and by the way, the angle isnt really precise, just c up to the door

hi, i had a problem on emulator, for a reason i dont know the timing to succeed the backflip in a megaflip became random. I mean when i started, it was roll after the second flash/backflip at the end of the roll, i've never got any problem until the timing became third flash for the roll and then totally random. I downloaded an other rom, it was good for several weeks and then same thing happened again.

When i began to play on VC there was nothing wrong, everything worked but progressively this problem occured, weird thing i noticed depending on where i did it the timing was quite different.
So i wanted to know if there is something to bring back the former timing.

(it's not like my timing was off or any mistakes i could do, i know the difference)

if you have an idea, thanks to let me know.

version: 1.1 jap

Hi everyone,
I recently decided to take a break from OoT MST and start learning any% MM JP about a week ago.
Everything is great right now the only thing that's stopping me from beginning to time my runs is twinmold.

I know obviously my aim needs practice but is there any small strats that would help? I usually use fire arrows get the blue one down then run out of magic\arrows. I'm not going for a great time I just need splits to compare to.

I also do the main room bk skip where you do 3 megasidehop hovers once I'm OOB into the loading zone.

I guess for now I could alternately do the recoil flip on chest bk skip and grab the giants mask on the way, although I would rather not. But again I just need to get myself splits to compare.

Any help or tips would great thank you !

EDIT:::::nevermind fire arrow blue 3 times light arrow red twinrova ive got this pretty down now

Since it's been a long time since I've played through Snowhead the way it was intended, I have a few questions about floor counts. The weirdshot that is used after the bridge room, is that the third floor that it gets you to? Also, I know it's not used anymore, but did scarecrow skip get you to 2nd floor, or am I completely off?

They both put you on floor 2 at the exact same location (after you exit the door with weird shot method)

there are 5 floors, the "basement", the first floor with the entrance and the bridge, the 2nd floor with the room where you weirdshot from and FA room (as well as the really annoying room with the ground pound switches) and the 3rd floor w/ the snowball path, and the top floor with the boss and key

Hello hello,

Can anybody give me any tips on the STT BK skip? It's the only bk skip I'mnot consistent with. The only problem I have is getting the angle to slip into that OOB area. The megaflips aren't the problem I just need a visual cue or something know that I'm aligned to go OOB?

Also if it's a dire situation how many chu hovers is it to the loading zone once your out of bounds 12? I usually just megaflip or megasidehop until I hit it

Ty so much in advance

geraggh34: align yourself to the steel structure, you can adjust by doing lil jumps with chus, try to not touch the texture on the left (0:18) but dont go too far or you will be out same goes for the height. There is also an invisible wall (before i used the 2nd bomb), if you dont have the damage value at 0 it wont be a problem. From the end of the video you can reach the loading zone by doing 3 megaflips or ~10 hovers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uR-jgTCHKM&feature=youtu.be

I also have a question, i'm looking for a way to succeed ISG on the first stab, i mean i want to know if someone has a setup to make sure it wont fail (mashing or whatever). thx  :)

What's the trick to dropping down when doing the Great Bay BK skip? I know you do the R+Up-right+Z thing to clip, but is there an alternative way to drop down besides mashing? I read a description somewhere that said to hold A too. When do you start holding A?

Title: Re: MM: Question & Answer Thread
Post by: Foxiiinou on June 05, 2014, 08:35:23 AM
you should use this setup:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seXZbapK-zA#t=3070

the only alternative i know is the old strat but no longer usefull and a bit harder.

i'm neither mashing nor keeping my finger on A, i'm pushing A several times to drop but i dont touch the joystick because it makes you back again on the ledge. Dont be too fast when you do sidehops, controls could be reversed.

Hello hello,

Lately, I've been grinding 100% and haven't have many issues besides two things

1. In stt when I do the recoil flip from elegy room on top of the cheat to the lava sunblock room it is always unloaded? Does this have to do with the junpslash?

2. I can do indexttrick but I usually waste 7 or 8 bombs because I eventually get it but don't exactly know how. Main questions are the bomb is supposed to be behind deku link or in front it seems likes its the opposite compared to a long jump. And also the analog direction. Sometimes I void under (or sink idk) sometimes a hit the loading zone.

Any help would be great Ty. And also is there a posted updated route of all masks with index warp?

Quick question for anyone who understands the technically-stuff about MM: How does time stop work? I know how to preform it, but I don't really understand exactly how it works/why it stops time. Is it just that you are interrupting an animation that stops time so that Link can walk around? Trying to make a page on time stop for the site, and I would really like to have a description that describes how the thing works.

Okay pretty stupid question inc

I've been grinding out 100% and just need to know how to keep bombers notebook code.

Do I just make a file (say file 1) get bombers notebook and then make a new file and copy the new file over that slot?
lol sorry in advance for this question. I checked the mm zsr page first before I decided to ask.

Does know what I can do to pass the Swordsman school expert level challenge? I tried using the N64 controller on my VC via converter however the controls are designed with Gamecube in mind. I tried using the Jump Attack method but I always mess on the first log and Jump Attack itself doesn't work for me. I was able to get 28 points but it isn't enough to get the heart piece. Do I need that heart piece or should I just plain cheat?  Is there any easier way to execute the Jump Attack?

if he misses the log altho you targeted it, you simply jumpslashed too early.
you'll notice link turning slightly after a few frames once you hit Z to target

Hello eveyone!
Big question for you all:

I really want to understand well the Bottle Adventure. I had a look at the page but some points remains dark. It also mention screenshots (I guess) about which bytes are modified when you pick up spring water into a bottle dupe over the Ocarina but no link to it :s.
I decided to take a look directly into the RAM (thanks to BizHawk emulator); I expected that all 25bytes were written/replaced those directly after the item slot but it seems that is not the case. I missed something, definitely...

Can someone light me about this? :)

I understand well this tricks and I also found what I was loking for. The bombers code and the oceanside skullta house code. It's amazing to see that it is simply bytes values. The other unknow values on the link you give are probably the winnig code for the lottery (3 bytes for each day).

Again, thank you! :)

I cannot get Zora Link to use his electric shield while floating in the water. I've tried pressing all combinations of buttons I could think of, individually, 2 at a time, 3 at a time. I can use it when he's shooting forward, or when he's flat on the ground, I just can't do it otherwise. I've been trying for an hour and a half, what am I missing? Hey guys.
I'm new here and kind of new to speedruns and i found a glitch in Majoras Mask, but im not really sure if this is known or not. (so pls no hating if this is old ;) ).
So i was messing around at pirate fortress. Taking my masks on and off, then i realised that the pirates on those patroling ships were gone. It seems like every time you put on a mask the ship is moving a little bit faster and the pirates are getting pushed back. So if you do it a few times they actually start to fall in the water and stay on the ground.
So i don't think this is usefull at all but kind of interesting. Like i said i have no idea if this is the oldest known glitch in majoras mask or if it really wasn't discoverd yet. (didn't find any post to this)

Transformation Masks cause a significant amount of Lag. This cause some actors to not move in a frame and desync. Then gravity takes over. The same trick is used in the Deku flower game to make the Rupees fall to the ground, in 100%.

Well it´s been a while since I have been here.
Now I have been working on save file that might seem odd,but It helps me to learn tricks(I hope)and my friend wants to play minigames ,beat bosses so..
1:No bombers notebook..I tried three hearts run but by accident got heartpiece from tingle picture.So..
2:All HP available without beating any temple bosses.
3.No other masks just Deku,Goron and Zora.
4 All possible songs(Not Oath to order or Eponas Song)
5:All possible items(including Light arrows,Mirror Shield..All which is not linked to bombers notebook prices or beating temple bosses..But those are on the end side of my learning trip)
6:All maps and compasses
7:All Stray fairies in temples(First one was easy..But for Snowhead the one in the ceiling in room of goron bound pillars..Is this goal possible?)
Now onto the questions/problems
For the record..I´m playing on N64 PAL EUR-1..
1st:Is there a certain point of flashing when I should shield drop the bomb?It seems mpossible to count it after it start flashing fast.I either get it on my face or I´m too late?
2nd:When I gave up trying to get that hidden owl straight from the bushes--I went to ECT to practice with chus..I did it on the ledge where you can jump to the next(above the guard).I positioned myself on the corner and started chu hovering towards the flagpole..Now odd thing is that I hovered downwards every time..Step by step..Tried it faster and somehow managed to blow a chu in my face(Should that even be possible?)so what am I doing wrong?Any easy way?

Hi, I've been practicing tricks for the Any% this past month and for some reason I am having significant trouble with the Ocarina Dive in Woodfall Temple.

I can not for the life of me figure out why I'm not falling down after doing the Zora attack and mashing the ocarina button. Sometimes Zora Link will clip just under the map but then will immediately come back up. No matter how many times I try, I can never get him to actually fall through. Am I missing something here?

I am using the Japanese VC btw

After so many years, I still can't superslide or turn while hovering. Well, I can turn, but i absolutely suck at getting the angle I want. I've listened to guides and read all the tips. I need the absolute-fu**ing-idiot's guide to these so I can really push my time. After speedrunning Majora's Mask 3D and getting 2:13 on my 5th timed attempt, I figured I'll go back to the 1st Zelda game I ever speedran. (1st game was Super Metroid).

Also, recoil flipping is something I haven't been able to do consistently. Whenever I backflip and shield damage rapidly, my momentum just halts after so many pixels. Also, how the hell does certain clipping even work? I want to know everything necessary to do the latest strats.

Everything I have down is basically ISG, bomb hovering, bombchu hovering, long-jumping, ESS bottle dupe if it's the same as 3DS... I think that's it. Sometimes I can do a quick Goht fight, and I'm pretty damn good at Gyorg. Majora, I'm decent at the fight. As it is, I'm still getting boss keys for all four dungeons.

That freaking sunblock on the well..And my non-existing skills..On three weeks I haven´t got the timing of bomb hovering with this PAL..
I place the bomb with A,on 2nd stab get ISG,Throw the bomb and get damaged..So I have been trying the Mirror shield..ISG and Chu hover(No dice)
Which leaves me with weirdshot..By tutorials I´m doing something right..But it either stays on the ground..Or crashes with funny images.(Owl feathers,Link floatin middle of white  screen etc)I watched some run on twitch where the guy said he was"overbuffering"?
On GC I got the hovering with chus at least pretty fast..Along with other tricks..I wish there would be a way to beat I kana Castle boss and his minions without Light arrows or Mirror shield..

Hello Guys,
Im pretty new to Majora´s Mask, but I want to learn any%. I already know the route and that standard stuff. I just have a simple question:
How should I train it? Should I get the tricks step by step, or by doing the runs over and over again?
I already learned OoT Any%, but it´s too short ^^ I want to learn the MM Any%

Hi all. I have just begun practicing any% and I'm struggling a bit with the PF long jump. The thing that is the most frustrating is that I can't seem to consistently get my shield dropped bomb to land on the barrels. Can anyone explain what might be the cause for it just landing on the floor so I can work on that specifically? I am pretty consistent at succeeding once I've done the shield drop properly...

You need to press the shield button at the same time you press the C-button for the bomb. Any delay between the two will cause it to drop normally.

So I'm trying to get into this game and I can't get the bomb hover in clocktown to reach the inaccessible owl statue. Is there a trick to chu hovers when you hit the back wall by the staircase, because every time I try and practice I fall down when I hit the back wall.

I think the trick is to do it really fast, but when I try to mimic the top runners I can't get it.

If you're using the Japanese version, you need to make sure you slash your sword once before beginning the hover. If you're using the English version, try releasing Z after getting high enough (that you don't fall back down to the ground).

I actually am slashing the sword before I attempt it. I'm using the English VC version. Even after releasing z like you suggested, all that happens is when I attempt another chu hop I fall down. Here's a video of my sad attempts. Am I just not getting high enough or am I back flipping to early?

I think you might be doing the chu-and-shielding too late into your backflip. To show what I mean, try this: Once you're two hovers off the ground and almost against the wall, backflip and IMMEDIATELY press pause. You should have paused right when Link's hands are pointing up in the air. Now, unpause, and before the game resumes, hold the chu and shield buttons. You should ALWAYS have the chu explode in this case. Now, do another backflip, but wait just a LITTLE bit longer and do the same thing. The chu will always run up the wall. Take a look at https://youtu.be/QIwTHG48LwE to see what I mean.

In addition, it looks like you always try to drop the bomb behind you as you do your first hover off the ground. This is not necessary; you can pull the bomb and shield drop it so that it falls at your feet. As long as the A button doesn't say Grab (which it shouldn't if you're against the wall), you're fine.

Thanks RattleMan this was a big help. I was trying to quickly spam the inputs like I would in OOT but there's a timing to it.

For those who had trouble with this as well here's  another video that has inputs to it which helped me:

http://youtu.be/zmD5GzSoiDU

You have to find a button confit where you can quickly tilt your thumb and hit all the inputs one after another very quickly.

Hello everyone, I'm just starting out this post by saying I've never tried to speedrun anything, and I probably won't post anything else after this, but I've been wondering about a certain possibility I don't think has been explored in any%

So in-game, NPCs who fill bottles with things ignore glitch duped bottles, and fairies in duped bottles don't activate upon death. With this in mind, has it ever been tested whether Hot Spring Water ever cools down if it's in a duped bottle?

If it doesn't, does that mean you could potentially glitch into the grotto on the mountain path, bottle some water, and use it to thaw Goht and therefore skip the Fire Arrows? I'm not sure whether it would save any time as opposed to fighting Wizrobe, but the possibility might exist, and that's something I'm curious about

Welcome to speedrunning! Unfortunately, it's been tried; Hot Spring Water cannot thaw Goht.
