Title: [MC] Segmented and SS run
Post by: Blizzerk on August 31, 2009, 02:42:31 PM
I feel that sorry TSA that i can beat TSA's SS minish cap time and i feel creating a segmented run would be very possible in about 20 or 22 segments.

SS: I believe 2:30 or less is possible, if you have watched his run, its full of errors and he even states it was just to get the game in the ground.

Segmented: sub 2 hours, easy. The ocarina glitch would be useful amazing because you can skip 2 dungeons however i this might be a different category on SDA.

regardless, even with no new tricks found (hold for ocarina glitch) sub 2:30 is possible and i'll be aiming for 2:20

Fun fact: the test run (atma's suboptimal) tas was 2:24 but ive found places to improve it.

this page will be edited when Grunz gets back from vacation and has a route.

Actually, I made a route a little while ago (attached with this post).  I was going to do a run with this route, but I got a little too hooked on TP and then just abandoned it.

I don't think anything's changed, but feel free to make any corrections/insult the route.

EDIT: Slight changes to the route, nothing too major though.  Route is up to date as of 06/30/10.

That's quite helpful, actually. Grunz is writing a route and will give it to me when he gets back, but i'm pretty sure they are the same, howerver i haven't read yours yet...

Update: Sub 2 hours segmented is very possible I believe, with some minor route adjustments I can see 1:59 or less (most likely less)

Title: Re: [MC] Segmented and SS run
Post by: SD2 on September 04, 2009, 10:03:25 PM
I've decided I'm probably going to tackle a single segment run of the game after I practice a bit.

Sub-2:20 was the prediction we made a while ago with the segmented run using the ocarina glitch, but if you say the TAS got a suboptimal time of 2:24, we could probably get a segmented run a bit lower than the 2:20 we originally predicted.

I'm probably not going to start a run until Grunz gets back with the route.  He made a post on the TASvideos forum, but his post made it sound like he was still on vacation, so hopefully I'll be ready to stream live (if there are no objections and people would actually watch) within a week.

Just adding this on, I saw your new post:  Sub-2?  I had a run at the Fortress of Winds in (I believe) 1:15 or so, so going sub-2 would really be pushing it.

THe test run TAS did NOT use the ocarina glitch, so yeah, that seems possible to go sub 2 hours :3 It depends on the route, shortcuts and such. Ive found a few I havent published... If I posted a .vbm movie of just me laying without rerecords as a test run, would anyone watch it? it would be SS though so I would have to make like 40 small .vbm's

Title: Re: [MC] Segmented and SS run

Sub 2:25 with no Ocarina glitch?  That's insane.  :o

Sub 2 sounds completely reasonable now...  Ocarina glitch saves at least 15 minutes, so with optimization, segmentation, etc...  What do you think is a reasonable goal for the SS, sub-2:10?

Yes, I'd watch the test run, but don't go out of your way to make it, I've played through the route a couple times and it worked fine.

Died half an hour into a practice run, at the Crenel Wall.  Even with 4 hearts, its hard to survive...

Well, I'd love to see the test run/stream you were speaking about.

sub 2:10 for a SS? I doubt it. Don't do a SS with the OG (Ocarina Glitch) because you need to manipulate a red kinstone of a specific shape from an iron knuckle. you only fight it once. no do-overs. in other words the only other way to get the right kinstone 100% is to go out of your way for a chest and with that you may as well not do MC SS with OG at all :S

The chest is just at the top of the school, takes 2 minutes tops to get, and contains the proper kinstone every single time, if I'm not mistaken.  Either way, it's a hell of a lot faster then doing Royal Valley and Cloud Tops.

Sorry for double post, but I've been watching Greenalink's videos, as well as TSA's old run, and I think I've got the SS route down.

The SS route will remain much the same, except that:

Instead of grabbing the red rupee the second time at the top of the vine (Start of Mt. Crenel), I'll be grabbing the one in the Deepwood Shrine.
I'm going to be grabbing every single heart container.  Enemies are rampant in this game, so it'll be much safer.
Castor Wilds will use a slightly altered route, nothing too serious though.
I'm going to exclude use of the Ocarina glitch to skip a bit of the third library book.  It's far too risky, and I'll be over an hour into the run.  As well, I get 1 shot.  In ways, it's like the Lullaby skip (in MM).
Finished the Temple of Droplets route.  Pretty much the same as Greenalink's, but I'll be including the ice block puzzle skip and will use death abuse at the normal savewarp point.
I'll get the required red kinstone from on top of the school.  Adds a minute max, and takes out the luck manipulation.
Palace of Winds route remains unchanged (thankfully).
Dark Hyrule Castle will be very interesting.  The ocarina glitch will be used to skip the first part, though I can't grab the small key from that because it takes so long.  So I'll head upstairs, Ocarina glitch to grab the key from the ledge.  Jump down the ledge, then grab the key from the southeastern area (the one that you normally have to defeat darknuts to get).  From there, I'll continue normally, then grab the keys from the north corners, get the big key, kick Vaati's ass. :)

I think I may have found a new timesaver.  In the Temple of droplets, after revealing the first half of sunlight used to melt the ice, go back to the portal, and go down the stairs.  Use the ocarina glitch, and go down 2 screens.  Use the Ocarina (cancel glitch), grab the small key, continue on.

Don't think it would save more than a couple seconds (if at all), so I won't be including it even if it does save time.

If you are deathwarping, hearts can become more of a time waster than you think. You can't speed up bomb fuses, so you would want to take as much damage as possible from enemies as you make your way to the deathwarp. Skipping just the heart before the deathwarp, may be an option too...

But optimization on that kind of level may be better saved for latter in preparing for the SS...

Looking forward to all MC progress, especially SS!

There's very convenient cliffs very close to me, and I can easily take a lot of damage during the electric chuchu miniboss anyway.

The key for the last two dungeons is simply going to be survival, for those who are interested.  I'm going to be practicing them a lot more (in addition to practicing the ocarina glitch), because both have darknut battles (black darknut in HC can take off 3 hearts with 1 attack x_X) and chain trooper battles.  Especially in Hyrule Castle, where there is almost no health, so I basically have 8 hearts of health for the entirety of the castle.  Thankfully, there's a fairy I can pick up during Vaati's first phase, so health during Vaati will hopefully be a non-issue.

And then of course, I have to practice this all with a gamecube controller. >_>

I'm up around 70% now. :)

For those of you who weren't watching, i recently lost a very good ss attempt during the book collection sequence (I forgot to talk to the librarian, best error ever).  The time was around 1:10 at the time of failure, I had already returned 1 book.  I was in health trouble for most of Castor Wilds and Wind Fortress, but both darknut battles were almost perfect.  I had to get a heart piece (costing around 30 seconds >_>) in order to stay alive.

On a side note: Cave of Flames is so fucking easy. :)

Truth be told it's the route that's allready out there O_o I didn't know anyone had it on paper because Atma as being a jerk and not sharing the route...

Title: Re: [MC] Segmented and SS run
Post by: SD2 on September 08, 2009, 12:49:24 AM
Does that mean the current route is correct?

I'm doing a practice run on my DS Lite, but I'm timing it.  Haven't died, minus death warp, of course, but I'm only halfway through the Wind Palace (stopping to imitate disc change).

I have a time of around 1:53 atm, just before the darknut miniboss.  I've made at least a couple minute's worth of mistakes (lost well over a minute in Wind Fortress alone), so my final time here will not represent a submittable time.

Final time: 2:30:10.  Vaati was awful, and with all my other mistakes, a sub-2:25 seems submittable.

I did beat Vaati with over 3 hearts left, and I decided to pick up a fairy before the palace of winds...  Obviously I wont be getting the fairy is the actual run, but I just did this for an estimate.

Also:  School for me starts tommorow, and because I am going to play volleyball for my school, that means my only viable time to work on this run will be weekends, unfortunetley.  Just giving a heads up.  I fully expect the run to be completed by the end of October due to my very uneventful weekends nowadays. :)

MC so happens to be 1 of my fav zelda games, along with like 4 others XD

Id love to see a new speed run of with :P
Even a 100% RUN!
But you probably would want to keep it fast as possible to finish :O

Planning like 60 kinstone fusions, including doing the fusions at an optimal time and getting the actual kinstones, would be an absolute nightmare to plan.  SDA's definition doesn't include green kinstone fusions (this makes zero sense to me), but there are 4 required ones (Tingle and his brothers).

Also, please get rid of that flashing sig, it gives me a headache, and I'm sure it does the same to everyone else...

I might try a run if I get this game. But I still need to find a cheap GBA player that I get. And yea I hate the flashing sig. Get rid of it.

Easy semester at school = lots of time to work on the run.  Expect me to get a lot of attempts in on the weekend.  I lost an attempt at the ToD a couple of days ago, and to be honest haven't touched the game since (until earlier today, where I couldn't even get into DS in like 4 attempts :().  I no longer am able to stream because it's far too much of a hassle for me to set up.

Oh, I talked to the volleyball coach at school, and he was talking to me as if I had pretty much made the the team.  Good news for me, bad news for you. :P

With this, I'm pretty sure that European version will be a separate category.  Kinda like the single player/multiplayer rules on SDA.

Title: Re: [MC] Segmented and SS run
Post by: Greenalink on September 12, 2009, 09:30:34 PM
The European version also has 1 less Bomb Expansion that goes up to 50, there's also 1 less tornado near by the Goron Cave. A minor note is that there is a bug on some of the Kinstone dealers you decline to that you can't make a deal to them again = prevents obtaining the Tingle trophy.

Greenalink, I don't wan't to step on anyone's toes here, are you running Minish cap aswell?

Title: Re: [MC] Segmented and SS run
Post by: Greenalink on September 14, 2009, 09:36:45 AM
I was planning to but that little difference alone has sort of put me off. If there was an European run that got submitted (segmented) then the next run that is played on the US version has to be at least over 40 seconds faster or else it gets rejected IMO.

I'm saying that just because the US version has a time saver it doesn't mean it's ok to have 30 extra seconds worth of mistakes.

The single segment run shouldn't be too different since it's a single segment and there's huge amount of luck to factor from the Darknuts to the room filled with enemies.

You keep asking me for it >_> i know a guy in japan who goes by the name of Xaito. I believe he works with nintendo or something because he gets rom dumps before anybody else. I had Heartgold on september 2nd, 2 weeks before the japanese release date/official (Xenophobia) rom dump.

I have a ST rom dump, but it was dumped horribly, and will not run. it will not run on an emulator, and runs on some flashcards. it will not run on a r4ds or a dstt, i got it to work twice on a acekard 2i, but then it quit. i am almost certian that it was the demo but i can't tell because my japanese skills are not like they used to be (i learned full hiragana for my platinum game i pre-ordered way back in septemer 2008)

if you'd like a dump, i'm not sure how i could get it to you. Xaito says he is re-dumping it, but needs some time.

I'll update you guys later...

Ignore all that, TSA's ss was very good run, considering how long ago it was, no one else looking for break or route planning. Then again, with all the new stuff, beating TSA is no huge accomplishment. Do you not think your play quality is as good as TSA's?

His channel has done a Glitched speed run in 2:06:39, he says it's a new record (but emulated/TAS runs are not pure WRs).
I know it's done on a emulator because of the poor sound you get from the ocarina. In fact it looks like a TAS because the items are changed to fast.

Edit: He does add TAS in the tags so he knows what he is on about.

New run in around 2:13:20!!!

I'll post the actual time and the video when they're done.

Damn, that's a sick route, SD2.

This trick cuts off about a minute.  Is it worth redoing the run over?

Oh shit, I forgot to write about that one... When I was talking to Blizz about our TAS, we were looking into stuff in the PoW, then I found that one. I guess I didn't show it to anyone else though (Even though I'm positive I posted in IRC at least). Just so you don't think I'm lying, here's the emulator movie of it, if you open it with VBA you can see the recording date.

Sorry that I forgot to mention it :/.

I say you keep your submitted run so that it will (hopefully) come up on SDA. Then you can later on redo the run and include it.

Alright, I rewatched the TAS, and nothing in it can be applied to the current SS route.  Everything he does is slower.  The ocarina glitch book quest route is 5 seconds slower than my SS run, and that's with grabbing the second bottle factored out.  This also includes the savewarp and the faster route to the third book (which should be included in a new SS), both of which my run didn't have.

No changes to the SS route except the new PoW break and the faster route to the third book.

Also, I'm still not doing a new SS run until flippers skip is discovered. :P

SS 100% route

2 questions:

1)
Quote
5.Biggest Bomb bag (holds 99), Quiver (holds 99), wallet (holds 999)

The European version only has 2 bomb bag expansions and goes up to 50 so the route will be different on the earlier 2004 version.

2) If the first 130 figurines are required for that locked heart piece, what about the final 6 (131-136) after completing the game?

I'm assuming that the European version just wouldn't get the upgrade.

Only the 130 figurines for entering the house are required, the other 6 can be skipped.  You may notice that mirror shield is skipped, for much the same reason last 6 figurines are skipped, it just adds another 30 minutes onto the run w/o doing anything new or interesting.

I forgot about the Mirror Shield upgrade.
Still very bizzare game design choice for a Zelda game to have 2 extra tasks locked until you complete the game.
So techically this is "100% of everything before completing the game".

Pretty much.  This was the definition that Mike agreed with me on, and it's huge step forward from the old definition.

That's cool then, best of luck to any runner with the 130 figurine collection.

Only just found this post, does anyone even run this game anymore?  I've started to run it recently(sad time of 3:13), also has anyone ever tested the Japanese version for time differences?

Ended up getting the J copy of the game, from what I can tell so far most of the text boxes take alot less time(Gentari I think is 1, 5 to 2, 6) need to get some time to get up to Vaati and some of his longer spiels, might make a video of the differences.
