OoT cart or Console?

So I just bought a random oot cart and too my luck it had original fire temple music .Anyway when I was fighting Phantom Ganon from the Forest Temple it would randomly freeze with a little yellow underscore in the Top-Left corner.Would this be N64's fault since I've had it since
1996 or the carts fault?Help!

Edit: PS I did get past him it just does this randomly like every 1 1/2 hours or so.

Its probably the cart's fault if it doesn't happen every time.  Try blowing into the cart, if that doesn't work you might be stuck with random freezes every once in a while, that happens with very old cartridges. 

Also, if you have something you forgot to add to your post, you can use the edit button instead of making a new post.  I fixed that for you.

It can be either, really. Clean out the cart and the console as much as you can.

Windex + Q-tip is the easiest cleaning option for the cartridge. Just rub it vigorously back and forth against the connectors underneath the cart.

I had this issue with my PAL N64 as well. But I got around of it cleaning connectors of console itself what is pretty easy to disassemble and then clean it inside. And of course cartridges itself.

Other similar problem was when I overclocked my N64. It worked fine for years and then after that it began to freeze very often for unknown reason. After all research I returned my n64 to normal and it worked fine again.

It increase speed on some games. One of the best examples are Kirby 64 and Super Smash Bros. On some other games it doesn't lag that much when you play it. In oot this increase game speed very little bit. I performed test about four years ago with it. Two n64 with two oot cartridges. Other one was overclocked and other normal. I started opening cutscenes both same time and when I checked it after half hour overclocked one was about three seconds ahead of normal one. I can't remember so clearly how many seconds it was but still something. And this stuff is true and I have tested this thing! ^_^

Same n64 began to freeze after three years on oot and mm and pokemon stadium and those games worked on normal n64. So I returned overclocked n64 to normal and everything worked fine.

You can also just use alcohol (not the drink) and Q-tips and do the same thing Alec said.
