Yobo swordless DoT skip

I've been yobo'ing SDS lately, and there are times where it will work 9 times out of 10, and times where it won't work. Sometimes Link will void for some reason despite me having done nothing differently (using makaron setup so the angle is fine). Any way to avoid this? I used to two pause it but that can be a bit tricky on N64. I feel like the void might be happening because I'm holding up left instead of just left, but this never made me void during 2 pause.
