Title: Impromptu Speedrunning - Sunday July 11th, 2010
Post by: RingRush on October 04, 2009, 03:13:31 AM

---

The Idea: Basically, this is a real time race of OoT (and maybe MM sometimes). Everybody waits in chat for the signal, and at the "go", they all begin a new file.

The catch? The players learn the goal of the run only while waiting for the intro cutscene to finish. This means there are no pre-planned routes or practicing sections: you have to make up and execute your path on the fly. Don't worry if you aren't the most knowledgeable in OoT - without premeditation, it is unlikely that obscure tricks will be thought of and used. Basically, all you need is decent skill, decent glitch knowledge, and the ability to think fast and play fast at the same time.

Since this is a new experience for everyone, it will probably be pretty chaotic, and anybody could win. Just post your progress every once in a while in irc during cutscenes so we can see the competition unfolding. Chances are, this will be great fun to everyone involved.

I'd imagine doing one impromptu race a month, on some given time such as the first saturday or last sunday. When the best time would be is up for discussion, as we want to incorporate as many people as possible.

But yeah, right now nothing is happening. If enough people show interest, we'll pick a date for the first one and see how it goes. Post any suggestions or support in this topic.

Sounds awesome  :D I'd do it.

I'd love to.

don't have OoT here right now, I might have to sit the first one out :(

I support this idea.

I think it's a kickass idea, and depending on when it is and how confident I am, I'd definitely join in the competition :)

So would it be like a full game run or a setup run for a dungeon then doing said dungeon type of stuff?

I'm down for this.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Slowking on October 04, 2009, 08:56:05 AM
Those runs could also be done on emulator. Nobody can cheat since tasing it previously isn't possible since nobody knows what's going to get played exactly and this way everybody could stream their games...
Furthermore it evens the playingfield. No region differences, version differences, etc. Everybody gets ou PJ64 and runs this shit.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Jiano on October 04, 2009, 11:22:51 AM
People could use fast forward. Although if someone finished significantly faster than everyone else and didn't have a secret strat then we'd know something is up.

Didn't see you mention streaming. I guess if we had to stream it, but I'm sure some people won't want to.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Slowking on October 04, 2009, 12:00:17 PM
and this way everybody could stream their games...
Didn't see you mention streaming.
Uhmm...

Why wouldn't they want to stream? And even if they don't we could just make it a rule and they would have to suck it up. :D
Half the fun of this would be to see the race between the contestants. Without streaming this isn't much fun...
And even if no streaming takes place we would see fast forewarding later on the videos. It's not like we are going to take epoples words for their time anyway. ;)

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Blizzerk on October 04, 2009, 02:34:04 PM
I support this.

Emulators: I don't like it. Imagine the cucco jump. Imagine a nub like GlitchesAndStuff messed up on the cucco jump and had to go OoB to get back, while an emulator could just keep jumping at the perfect angle over and over until you get it.

IDEA:

I ResHack an emulator. Take out savestates and speedup. Distribute it here...

yes? no? gtfo blizz wtf u sayin?

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Unreal on October 04, 2009, 03:38:47 PM
The only way I'll do this is if everyone streams their run and we have a certain number of people watch and time the exact time they started and ended. (like I said last night) Not everyone can stream so that will be some kind of problem.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Lexkeeta on October 04, 2009, 04:59:59 PM
I can't stream, so you'd just have to take my word.

But I doubt I'd ever win anyway, especially when DoT skip is beneficial

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: RingRush on October 04, 2009, 06:04:49 PM
I think requiring people to play on the emulator isn't the best idea either because of control issues (personally, I couldn't do anything on an emulator I can do on a console).

I think everyone who can should stream, but if you can't stream I think it would be okay. Just require updating of where you are maybe once every five or ten minutes, or during cutscenes. The exact rules would need to be decided on. They should still record though for proof.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Jiano on October 04, 2009, 06:39:47 PM
Cosmo has some pretty good rules here. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

[12:58] <Cosmo> emu runs have to be streamed, console runs need the need the end to be recorded, and they all have to name their file to something that they dont know what it is until they're about to start

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: GlitchesAndStuff on October 04, 2009, 06:49:09 PM
Imagine a nub like GlitchesAndStuff

stfu blizzerk!

anyway, I can't stream, but I can record... if you want to see it the next day or something.. because this sounds like an awesome Idea and I want in...

under one condition... you do some MM ones too because I like MM more :P

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Majora MIM on October 04, 2009, 07:14:48 PM
That's the best idea ever! :D It would be so funny.

And Cosmo's rules seem perect.

(But I'll surely have to play those runs by night since I'm french...)
[(me plying at midnight): run run run run...zzzzzzz...BOOM (the controller rumble)... what the...!? (game over)]

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Lexkeeta on October 04, 2009, 08:05:58 PM
well that would be perfect, but how would you know if a console run's time is truthful?

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Cosmo on October 04, 2009, 09:21:59 PM
the first to upload proof of completion

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Samoht on October 04, 2009, 10:54:56 PM
Cool idea. I'd be in for something like that.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Lexkeeta on October 04, 2009, 11:59:44 PM
upload it to where? youtube wouldn't work. Plus, it takes awhile to get it off the cam to the comp, plus different times to upload...

edit: what about the first to upload a pic of Ganondorf saying "curse you... *insert impromptu speed run name*!" That's the perfect solution. Although I guess emulator always has a big advantage. If we make it a weekly contest thing, there'd have to be a separate table for emu and console.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: RingRush on October 05, 2009, 01:18:29 AM
Not every run ends with dorf though.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Lexkeeta on October 05, 2009, 02:03:47 AM
well, since we can't guess what the ends of those runs'll be, we can just upload a pic of the last screen

btw whats the fastest place to upload pics? photobucket is slow for me

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on October 05, 2009, 03:42:52 PM
If a console run has to record the ending, why not just record the whole thing? Then it wouldn't matter who uploaded it first either, the times could be verified after.

If it can't all be recorded but you are on a laptop, take the IRC chat next to the TV screen and snap a picture/take a short video of the screen at the goal, then reset to show the file with the correct character name. Whichever picture has the earliest post on it from the chat would be the winner. The scrollbar on the side would have to be all the way down obviously. Then it wouldn't matter how long it took to actually upload. If you were on a desktop then not sure, but if they were semiclose you could still walk between the two and have it be a 10 second video even on a cell phone or something.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: GlitchesAndStuff on October 05, 2009, 05:43:58 PM
that's am awesome idea...

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Blizzerk on October 05, 2009, 07:16:48 PM
Runnerguy's Idea is great. I mean, take a few pics during the run and maybe tape the last 10 minutes?  ganondorf will curse your name and such, then just reset and show your name... once you stike ganon, show the irc with the chat and everything

It would allow for more if not most people to play along instead of the few who have access to proper recording tools  (like me  ;D)

IT'S BRILLIANT!

RG should be the next Zelda Scientist!

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Lexkeeta on October 05, 2009, 07:59:21 PM
well my cam can only record 45 min and I have a desktop. So I'd just record a vid of the chat, then running over to my room and showing the last screen and resetting?

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on October 05, 2009, 08:53:45 PM
Yeah I mean, if you show the current chat and then run over to the game and show the completed goal, it would pinpoint when you had finished. Then as long as you uploaded it people could verify it, since pretty much everyone would be in the chat. You could even type out "I'm done" as you are recording and have it show up on the chat (would also prove you were at the bottom of the chat and not scrolling up a little bit), then go over to the completed screen.

Then you reset and show the file with the correct Link's name that would only have been given out at the start. If the final goal wasn't to beat ganon; maybe before resetting, pause and show the 4 screens, then save and load it up and show that the items and stuff match with the correct Link's name.

RingRush are you heading this? I have a few goal ideas. I'd also like to participate in ones where it's not my selected goal.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: Lexkeeta on October 05, 2009, 09:21:48 PM
the "im done" idea is flawless since it would have to be in the vid therefore can't be premature.

It should be at a set time each week (i.e. it's always 2:00pm EST on Saturday)

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: RingRush on October 05, 2009, 10:13:28 PM
1. Right now it is planned to be monthly, though I guess it can change to weekly if we get enough participation.

2. RG, yes, I'm heading it as of now, and I set cosmo as the fill-in if I'm not here. If he ever wants to let you lead instead, then that would be fine.

3. Reading this topic, I see many references to Ganondorf. Keep in mind that most runs will not end with Ganon's Castle. The example goal we were discussing in chat for instance, "get ten hearts as fast as possible", wouldn't require you to even become adult necesarily (though it would probably be beneficial).

4. Before we start, I need rules agreed on by the community in an official format.

Cosmo has some pretty good rules here. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

[12:58] <Cosmo> emu runs have to be streamed, console runs need the need the end to be recorded, and they all have to name their file to something that they dont know what it is until they're about to start

prettay, prettay good.

Although it'd be a relatively short run for those who know glitches.

Escape the forest, dot skip, a binary glitch for the spirit and shadow medallions. badaboom bada bing, a few cutscenes and ganon later and you're done.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: icebreaker007 on October 06, 2009, 01:30:47 AM
yeah, that'd basically ask people to do the any% run which is already posted on the site and the run will most likely be something that won't have a predetermined route

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning
Post by: RingRush on October 06, 2009, 03:27:31 AM
First impromptu has been decided to be on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17

The time has not yet been decided. Discuss.

The goal...well I'm not telling you, but it has been chosen.

The recording and proof rules have been set in chat, but I don't remember them. I think Jiano might, I'll wait until he reads this.

That might be a bit early, since I don't know what my homework will be like that weekend. But I think 1:00 should be fine. I usually take a break then anyways if I'm not done.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday October 17
Post by: Jiano on October 06, 2009, 02:41:49 PM
The only rules I know are you need to show some sort of proof that you finished at the time you did.

I think 1 - 3 PM pst would be a good time.

Okay so to sum up the rules, as far as my understanding. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1. If you stream you're okay you can use emu or console and only need to say I'm done in IRC when you reach the goal.

Or if your without the recording equipment or hate using a keyboard.

2. A list of pics might be required to prove you're doing this right. Such as if it were simply an any% run with restarts then you could have them be at key points (bottle collecting, scarecrow song and such maybe) and hopefully ones that would say your name. Then say I'm done in IRC and upload the pics as a vid completion to youtube or some other form (hasn't been discussed in detail). Or you post them as soon as you take them to photobucket or some other site (I'm not certain which one is better.

The pics one is interesting it could allow for some weird challenges and somethings that people streaming would have to do like maybe get a kiss from King Zora or find out Ganondorf's horse is black. Though those two maybe to obscure you get my point.

EDIT: Oh and Ring could you make a collection of all the people who are planning on participating (barring some disaster).

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday October 17
Post by: Blizzerk on October 07, 2009, 07:20:44 PM
Wanting to participate - Also RR make an official time and a seperate thread for each competition so we don't get a 600 page thread (like the TP thread on SDA lol) so you can post time, date, runners and rules or whatever...

I can stream (very horribly with webcam on laptop + tv or something like that, i may not be able to though)

best of luck to all

sorry guys, I won't be able to take part, if it's 12PM where you are it will be 3am were I am, and that's too early, also 3pm where you are is too early because that would mean it's 6am here... it's a real shame because I really wanted to do it :'(

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday October 17
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on October 09, 2009, 05:55:50 PM
We should probably gather info on everyone who is interested in these, and find out where they all live to determine how to include the most people for the future.

I also think a rule on savewarping/death warping should be determined for each goal right after the goal is stated, or maybe just a standard for it. This could play a big part in some events. It feels like these should be SS but if I'm sure saving and resetting will save time in places.

I saw we make a zelda standard time, just a small widget on the top right corner of the site/forums, and maybe we could fix RBABot to state the current zelda time...

is this a good idea?

I can get guaybot to do anything...

Jiano and Cosmo seem to not approve of my bot, but i can make him:

-Show who's running
-show the date/time of running (in all timezones)
-show the times when people finish (it will log your time when you type !done or something)

and other various things...

Those would all be good features to have, we'll see if we can get them into RBABot in time.

If not...I guess we'll use that Guay bot until we have time to fix RBA.

October 17th Impromptu
IMPROMPTU GOAL: VISIT AND OBTAIN THE REWARD FROM ALL SIX GREAT FAIRY FOUNTAINS. TIME ENDS UPON THE SIXTH FAIRY FOUNTAIN CUTSCENE ENDING
Reminders: BA/RBA is allowed. Savewarping is allowed. Using a guide or watching a video during the run is allowed, though wastes time. You may restart your run at any time if you feel the need to do so, though this wastes quite a bit of time.
For those who do not remember, the six fairy fountains are Magic, Double Magic, Double Defense, Din’s Fire, Farore’s Wind, and Nayru’s Love. If you are using pictures or short videos for proof, take a picture upon obtaining each gift. Remember at the end to take video proof that you are using the right file.
If you are doing absolute or short recording instead of streaming, post where you are as much as possible, usually during cutscenes.
File Name: B2| That is the uppercase letter B and the number 2 | As soon as you input your name start your file and begin watching the intro cutscene.

RESULTS:
1. ZFG
2. ssbmproHRC
3. Jiano
4. BrianMP
5. keeta
6. Blizzerk
7. GlitchsandStuff
???. MrGrunz

Grunz will be awarded either 4th or 8th depending on if we choose to disqualify him or just give him a penalty. Let this be a lesson: even random glitchs must be dealt with (after all, Jiano had his game freeze and reloaded and kept playing anyways).

As for how the rupees will be awarded...we have to discuss that. I suggest a sitewide rupee chart, that involves ILs from all games and impromptu victories.

He used a cheat to get a bottle in his inventory because he couldn't select the ocarina.

That's not a random glitch at all, I'm pretty sure Runnerguy knows the specifics of it

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, November 21
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on October 19, 2009, 02:38:00 AM
Yeah, if it was something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0HssXDJsBE), that's simply due to not enough items on your item screen. To fix it, pause, put it on the item screen, unpause, leave your current area, pause again...and it's on the highest item you have (most likely ocarina or if you did RBA bombs it would be on that bottle). I even do this in my segment 5 to get the ocarina equipped.

I don't mind emu runs if they are streamed but otherwise it's just too hard to know if savestates or fast forward was used. Something like using a cheat to get a bottle seems like it should be a time penalty...afterall, he could in fact do forest temple, go back in time (also would require hover boots and giant's knife I think), get a bottle, go forward through time, and continue (this is the time I'd add to the final time [it would be estimated obviously], plus maybe an extra 5-10 minutes for the penalty). Just as Jiano could reset and continue after his game froze.

Well, Cosmo really outdid me in terms of announcing the topic. Way to make me create a picture for next one :(

Anyways, I think we decided Impromptus will move to Sundays, so the next one is tentatively at Sunday, December 20th, 1:00 PST / 4:00 EST

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Next Date TBA

it can't be moved to sunday, because nobody from europe could take part then

on monday is usually school or work, so I can not play zelda until 1 am ;)
Impromptu usually starts at 10 pm for me

Do you have the 21st off? It's right near the holidays.

What about something like 11 AM PST / 2 PM EST? That would be 8 PM for you. Is that too early for the people out on the West Coast? 11 AM isn't really that early.

Just trying to think of a way to get the most people. I don't know if the 1 PST/4 EST is the best but it seems to be decent so far.

I vote for any day that isn't Friday or Saturday(preferably any time after 1:00pm).

1) Most likely not going to happen aleckermit. There are just more people free on Saturdays.
2) "1 PM" where? We've got people all over the world. I still think we could play with the time to get the best turnout.

I vote the 9th and the 30th. I thought there were gonna be two since this one was early to avoid holiday interference. Then go back to Feb. 20th (3rd Sat of the month).

That's 27 days to the next one....21 days for the one after that...and 21 days for the one after that.

My bad, I live in the Central Time Zone, United States. If it has to be Saturday I guess I'll just have to hope I'm lucky and don't have to work(it's my most common work day). I'll check my schedule on Monday and let you guys know what(if any) Saturday I have free.

EDIT: I checked at work and I am available on the 2nd and 30th of January. I know you guys can't plan around my schedule alone but it would be awesome if we could do it on one of those 2 days.

How does Saturday, January 2nd sound for the first impromptu of the new year? Since we are planning to have two impromptus in January, I think I will make the first one Majora's Mask, if everyone is okay with that. It'll be pretty interesting, since not nearly as many people have a clue about MM :p.

ok, how about we have 2 impromptus per month: one for oot and one for mm?

that way everyone would be happy, and we wouldn't have to have 1 less oot impromptu in favor of a mm one. :)

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - next is January TBD

No. We are doing it for January because of the early placement of the last one in December. For the last time, we will not up the impromptu ammount.

OoT? MM?
What, honestly, no WW impromptus? It wouldn't take THAT long...

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - next is January TBD
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on December 22, 2009, 05:54:05 PM
January 2nd: Might increase attendance
MM: Would probably decrease attendance (if not then it would most likely decrease the amount of people that finish)

I kind of don't want an MM impromptu to replace an OoT one, but if it gives MM more exposure on the site (look at what the marathon did to all the people trying to stream now), then I'd go with it. Although I'd probably stop practicing for my next segment (stfu ZFG) and practice MM if it was going to be on the 2nd, since I could hardly find a bunch of the masks let alone do some of the glitches.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - next is January TBD

I'll probably be able to have a go at it this time around. A few problems though. My computer is 2 floors up from my N64. I don't have a laptop. :'(

I'll be recording the entire thing hopefully, but all I have to record with is an iPod, which I'm gonna have to get someone to hold. Here's my proposal: I record the chat a couple minutes before the speedrun starts (to prove I started at the correct time). Then I give the iPod to my friend, he runs downstairs and I call him on his cell. When the signal comes to start, I tell him the filename and he records himself starting the file, then I wait to see what the goal is. Then I run downstairs before the intro ends and play while my friend records the screen.

I just wanted to make sure this is acceptable and not violating any rules because I really want to be a part of this one.

This does mean that I won't be able to post updates on the chat during cutscenes (except maybe really long ones, like becoming an adult).

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
Post by: SD2 on December 30, 2009, 12:25:52 AM
You don't have to record the entire run, you only have to record proof of you completing it.  If you want to record the whole thing, go for it, but it isn't necessary.

I might actually do this one. :o

What time will it start at?

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on December 30, 2009, 03:02:29 AM
Yeah you don't have to record the whole thing. Just get your friend to start the file, find out the goal, and then just run back upstairs as you finish and say "I'm done" in the IRC chat. Then go back downstairs and record and upload for the proof. If possible, during long cutscenes have your friend run up and post a small update on where you are. "Just got ocarina." or "Just beat Fire Temple." or whatever.

However, recording the whole thing is very entertaining, I always watch them afterwards to see what other people did. Just make sure you save some iPod battery for the end!

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
Post by: Elminster45 on December 30, 2009, 03:18:29 AM
Yeah I know I don't have to record the whole thing, but I wanted to anyway. I guess I can get my friend to run up and update for me, but I would either be recording the ceiling or playing one-handed. I suppose I could do it during even moderate-length cutscenes...if I'd just be mashing B to skip text.

Thanks for replying though, I wanted to make sure that wouldn't invalidate my run for a technical thing like "Oh you didn't do the whole run yourself, this other guy did the naming/intro for you" or whatever.

I need to learn to do megaflips and superslides by then. Getting last place (barring DQs and forfeits) would be just embarrassing. Although that's probably what's going to happen anyway. :-\

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Two orders of business:

1. When will the other January impromptu be? I was thinking MLK weekend would be best (although I won't be here), but it is worth discussion.
2. We should have some way to keep track of impromptu ranking to encourage people not to forfeit. I have a few ideas:
a) We have a sitewide rupee rank for each player, which is a combination of rupees awarded from impromptus (we'll have to think of the system) and IL rupees from all games on the site. This will encourage submissions to IL and participation in impromptus.
b) We have an impromptu league that keeps track of stats, and ranks players. Good, quick participation and completion of impromptus increases an individuals ranking.

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on January 04, 2010, 12:46:00 AM
1) I'd say no on MLK weekend as that's pound 4. Cosmo, Jiano, Mp16, and possibly a few others will be at that (on a side note, don't think I'm going to that). I'd say January 30th.
2) Sounds good. I think a lot of rupees should be given for any finishers, with obviously more going to the top spots. But just finishing is what we want. This past goal wasn't exactly difficult, and still the success rate was low.

As for sitewide, rupees should be given to players who do speedruns too, as the site is lacking in that area. It seems that no one wants to do a speedrun if it's going to come in 2nd, so we could have top 3 or something give rupees there as well.

I agree. Perhaps the rupee system will motivate me to do shit. And practice movement skills so my runs aren't embarrassing. As it stands I'll only be able to practice MM on weekends. Barring any disaster, I'm gonna do impromptu practice or no practice, but hopefully I won't suck.

And I was considering doing a Shadow 100% IL since nobody had done one. Not Spirit 100%, though. It's too much for me to go through a dungeon that was designed to be done twice (once as child and once as adult). If I can practice and NOT fail the Shadow Temple, I'll probably do it. Though that may take 3 months or so.

I shudder to think of what it takes to do an IL of Temple of the Ocean King.

I think it should depend on the number of people doing it. Like, if there are 7 people, the first winner gets 7 rupees, the second winner getting 6, the third winner getting 5, etc. Eventually leading to last place getting 1 rupee. It's still a reward for trying, but it's not much. Eh, eh, eh?

I agree with a sitewide points ranking and points for impromptu.

As for the next date, January 30th looks good to me.  Any objections?

I agree with RR because you could rack up points over time by just signing up for impromptus, not doing them, and claiming forfeit. Also some forfeiters earning one more or two more points than another is just kinda arbitrary.

I think there should be a decent point jump for those finishing vs. those that don't. I would rather seem more completions like Sigs than forfeits from people that just got sick of playing.

Maybe 3 points for completing +1 for every place up you get? Also, would this go in an impromptu table or a sitewide rupee count? And how do other game impromptus (i.e. MM) factor into this?

Title: Re: Impromptu Speedrunning - Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
Post by: Elminster45 on January 07, 2010, 11:49:30 PM
I think impromptus should have the same scoring as ILs. Makes the whole thing less confusing.

1st place - 20 Rupees
2nd place - 10 Rupees
3rd place - 5 Rupees
4th place - 3 Rupees
5th place - 2 Rupees
6th+ place - 1 Rupee
Forfeit/DQ - 0

And on another note, why the hell do MM and TP get less rewards? I can see that they're less popular, and people will farm easy 1sts or 2nds out of them, but if enough people do that, then the MM/TP ILs will become more popular. IMO if MM/TP rewards remain reduced, they will STAY less popular. I think it just kinda makes people not want to do them.

It's not even like its going to make it easy to overtake Jiano/Cosmo/Pokey. Even if you do 5 ILs in a Zelda game that noone cares about you're going to get the top ranking *in that game's leaderboard*. And since in those games 5th place = 1 Rupee, times below 5th place don't score. Why do that on the other games instead of OoT? It should be the other way around. If we do get 5 people to IL one MM/TP dungeon, we don't want to discourage more entries. OoT ILs seem to be really popular to do, so I could see removing obsolete runs to avoid oversaturation there, but that's not likely going to happen in MM/TP.

I don't even think obsolete runs should be removed from the OoT leaderboard unless we actually end up with a flood of them. If there needs to be a cut-off then I say it should go up to 10th place (and any old runs after that are removed and the runner loses the Rupee for scoring 6th+).

And I think a TWW IL page should be set up. It may not be popular, but at least players will have the option of doing one if they so choose *cough* Ani *cough*.

That said, if some people are thinking of combining an impromptu and IL leaderboard. Since there will (most likely) be very few MM runs, that would make for a lonely leaderboard there, so we could combine them if it weren't for the fact that OoT and MM ILs are on separate leaderboards. TWW and TP seem to be very left out on this. I think we should do impromptus for all 4 major games, and just rotate them. Maybe set up ratios to favor more popular games.

4/12 OoT
3/12 MM
2/12 TWW
2/12 TP

Something like that. I was playing with 5 OoT and 1 TWW, but if we were to do TWW it would be pretty said to just do it once a year.

I get that doing other games will decrease attendance for that month, but I can see it eventually get boring just doing OoT over and over (with the occasional MM). This also makes it less likely that we're gonna run dry of goal ideas.

A TP and ESPECIALLY a WW impromptu would fail horribly. Even an MM impromptu is a bit adventurous. Impromptus need a lot of people, and TP and WW simply won't bring in enough players.

I do agree that all games should have IL charts of equal worth though.

Post by: Elminster45 on January 08, 2010, 02:51:40 AM
Yeah that seems to be the main things in the way of impromptus for the other games....I'd do any of the games but the problem is that OoT is overwhelmingly more popular.

The first impromptu had 8 people in it, this one had 15. The problem being that it would be fairly pointless if only like 5 people were doing it. I don't think enough attention gets paid to the other games, personally. I would actually enjoy doing a TWW impromptu once in a while, and I'm sure one or two others would, but that's it. Which sucks, especially with the forfeit rate.

If we start getting more and more people for MM, then maybe we could at least see who would be interested in TP. TWW's a stretch though. Like not just randomly do a TP impromptu and have people go 'this is lame' but do one if enough people can be...persuaded on board.

IDK

The problem with impromptus isn't only popularity, but routes, the whole point of impromptu.  Because of the enormous amount of SBs OoT has, there's nearly an infinite number of ways to do anything which allows for many different kinds or competitions, and everyone will have significantly different routes.  MM has lots of SBs so it is also a candidate for impromptu, but not nearly as much as OoT.  Same with TP, but popularity is also a problem with that.

What ZFG said. No one plays TP/TWW, so there's little point in doing them. Who knows if we will even get people to do a MM one. Damn OOT why are you so much more popular.

Well for a hypothetical WW impromptu an open-ended goal would have to be carefully selected. Like maybe get X amount of figurines or something. Of course with the time-consuming sailing and lack of SBs, an impromptu may take a while, and will probably >_< deter people who DO play this game. I can see TP being run for this _eventually_, but WW is a longshot. Which sucks because I would love to do something like this for all the games.

At least we have ILs though.

Wait...

WE NEED WIND WAKER IL PAGES

And I think someone should open an impromptu topic in the MM board.

The GBA version of A Link to the Past would be interesting [Mirror glitching is more reliable than the Save & Quit glitch on the SNES]. Like get Bombos without using the Mirror in the Dark World (it is possible there is a way).

Unless I'm missing the point that Impromptu runs are more focused on the 3D games?

Epona should take about five minutes and twinmold under half an hour (time after completing firt cycle).
So that would be really really boring imo...

We should probably make an FAQ or something for this...I know the IL rules are all up on the IL page but the Impromptu ones I don't think are.

Basically all you need is to show up in the IRC chat, LinuzDk, and post updates during cutscenes, etc. of how you are doing. Then at the end, you just say "I'm done" in the chat, and you should be able to record the last 20 seconds (phone camera, webcam, recorder, pretty much anything just for proof) to show you really did finish.

It's more fun to have the entire thing recorded or streamed, but that's not necessary. So if you want to by all means do it.

Are we for sure doing MM on this one? If so, the issue of the 1st cycle should probably be dealt with.

There's no way around doing the first cycle. I mean it's pretty easy anyway and it's similar to having to do the damn rupee route and lullaby in every OOT impromptu. So I think it's fine how it is.

The problem is can we even get 5 people to participate. I guess this will be good to see if MM is even an option for impromptus. My guess is going to be no.

I also don't see the problem. People make it out like it's going to take forever, when in fact you are through in about half an hour.
Besides it is a part of the run, since you can set up different things for the rest of the run.

Quote

I honestly don't see the problem. I think if we do MM Impromtu they will come. (with they I mean the people who usually do impromtu)
Impromptu is all about winging it and I don't see them not knowing as much about MM as a big problem. The physics are similar to OoT and you can read up on how to achive your objective in about 5 minutes.

I think I have a good idea that even MM-noobs should be able to figure out really quickly, that still provides the possibility for a lot of different routes and should be fairly entertaining, imo.
So vote for me hosting the impromptu. ;)

I'll hope I can attend. Wish Sunday's were the normal day, but w/e.

EDIT: Someone on the IRC came up with the idea to have OoT on Saturday one month, MM on Sunday on the next month, then OoT Sunday, MM Saturday, etc and keep alternating them.

That way every person could run at least one impromtu every 2 months if either Sunday or Saturday is a bad day for them. I like this idea a lot.

Indeed. That is quite agreeable. But of course, we need to know which ones on which week. I vote that OoT first and third week, and MM second and fourth week. Also, on sundays of the new week.

I think 2 a month is a good balance; one of OoT and one of MM.

It could go:
Month 1:
1st Saturday (OoT)
3rd Sunday (MM)

Month 2:
1st Sunday (OoT)
3rd Saturday (MM)

Or something to that effect. Doesn't have to be 1st and 3rd weekends every time, but if the days alternate it at least gives people a chance to participate in the game they want every other month. If we do every single week, that's fine too and it just works more like Aki posted except I would still throw in the Saturdays.

But we can iron out the details later, we still need a host for this Saturday's OoT one.

I vote biweekly and see if it's too often or not.

So March 6th would be a MM impromptu.

Impromptu today at 3:30 PM EST / 12:30 PM PST

Grunz is hosting and has an idea, all it needs is confirmation and an image/text document to put together.

Be there.

Grunz screwed it up so we're rescheduling for next week.  This awful planning can never happen again.  We need a host and idea a week before.

That 12 heart container challenge mentioned earlier gives me a good idea for a race.  I am going to try to be in the irc tomorrow and start the challenge at 4 pm eastern time.  I will go through with my challenge whether there are 100's or I am the only person doing it.  However, it would be preferable if someone else could host if there are others besides myself competing.

In the end, there just has to be an item in every slot. You can decide between the quiver and the seed bag, for example. *You must not RBA any items on your equipment screen, so you shouldn't try to RBA Cojir

Save Warping and Death Warping is allowed. *You can enter ganons castle anyway you see fit *The file name is GrunzFTW *RBAing medaillons etc is allowed btw But no cucco or cojiro if you are you will be DQed

No kidding. Remen said that the goal would be given via a link. Then that was posted. I searched through it for a name... nada. Then the link was given.

Then I read the goal and then re-read it about 5 times trying to get the gist.

Overall there was too much text, a picture showing the full equipment screen + text like this would have been great:

"FILE NAME: grunzftw. The goal is to completely fill the equipment screen (all swords, shields, tunics, boots, a diving scale, bomb bag, a strength upgrade, and either the deku seed bag or quiver). None of the left-side items require uprades. The race ends upon the file name being said by Ganondorf in Ganon's Castle."

PS: Why was I kicked? I heard ZFG kicked mulitple people that were racing.... I didn;t realize I was not in #impromptu until a while into the race.

Since we seem to be in the habit of doing MM and OoT on the same weekend, and SD2 is hosting MM on Saturday, I decided I wanted to host the one on Sunday. I've got an idea for the goal, so now I just need to work on making a picture.

All we need now is a time. I was thinking 2 PM EST, but at the moment it's open to discussion. What time would work best for most people?

I'd say no on having MM and OoT the same weekend. It only happened once and that was due to an OoT makeup for the one with a bad start, and there was ALTTP scheduled the next week as well.

The reason being, if someone goes away for a weekend or is busy that weekend, they miss both games. By alternating it allows for people to miss one and not have to wait another 2 weeks or whatever to see the next one.

MM this weekend on Saturday
OoT next weekend on Sunday
MM week after that on Sunday
OoT week after that on Saturday

In my opinion that is how it should be done. Each game is played 2 times a month with one on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Can someone update the topic of this thread to show this date?
