Title: Twilight Princess GCN any% BiT run
Post by: TLoZSR on October 20, 2010, 03:14:00 AM
EDIT: I will be redoing the run

Hello, I'm pretty new around here and I'm doing a segmented speedrun of Twilight Princess. I was originally going to run OoT but there was too much competition and the game has already been broken almost as much as it can be. I've got my first segment done, not quite as happy with it as I could be, two rolls for the gate clip, but this was actually the first time I got BiT to work after a quick gate clip. Segment two is pretty good, really not much going on.

Total run time 12:50

Segment 1: 1:03 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhXQDksd-E8)
Segment 2: 1:51 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6eS0kxjQIU)
Segment 3: 5:40 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osiXZnZosaA)

Edit:

I finally got around to starting the run again, and so far I've been very happy with how it's turned out

Segment 1: 1:02 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYpdj2uZRMw) - 1 second faster than my old 1st segment, pretty happy with it
Segment 2: 1:48 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmljeO6TX1c) - 3 seconds faster than my old 2nd segment, pretty happy with it
Segment 3: 5:36 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJpTFAsKaCw) - 4 seconds faster than my old 3rd segment, very happy with it
Segment 4: 3:58 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4XqyKAxzeQ) - 2 seconds faster than the fastest I could find on youtube, and I'm extremely happy with this one.
Segment 5: 1:27 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZblHzHZ4GZ8)
Segment 6: 3:14 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I75JvT1kS24)
Segment 7: 1:43 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH4r-fsz5lU)

Good looking Seg1. Hope you finish the run.

Thanks, I've heard a lot about unfinished Twilight Princess runs. Hopefully I can finish mine, and I definitely plan to finish it.

Nicely done on segment 1.

Segment two is done with a time of 1:51. Now I'm on to some of the harder segments. I'm extremely bad at goat herding, so we'll see how segment 3 goes.

Just found Map Glitch without Kakariko Bridge Warp. Could possibly change the route, but I don't think we can do Early CitS without moving Kakariko Bridge.

Nice, if this were to change the route, what segment would be where the route changes? I've almost got segment 3 done, damn goat herding took a little longer than I thought to figure out.

We are still stuck on it because we need to find a way to move the Kakariko bridge back to it's place.

alright, so I'll just keep going with the original route.

If we found a way to get to the Twilit guards (we only need to defeat the three there and be able to warp somewhere in faron woods) that didn't suck up too much time, then the route would change right after the Sword and Shield skip. It would be pretty much the same route as is until getting the master sword, except we'd skip the bugs. Keep a save just after the Sword and Shield skip just in case.

Alright, I wouldn't mind skipping the bugs :D

I don't think you can skip Faron tears, because you need them to make the gold wolf appear to give you HS-1 finishing blow.  You need it to deliver the final strike to Ganondorf 4 and beat the game.

Lol are you shure of it?? skipping the bugs is known to be impossible, and how much time would it save??? I don´t really undertand what you are saying

I jumped the gun on that one a little. I'll explain more in the Trick Discussion thread.

Yeah, I know, double post (BAD!) but anyways, I've finished segment three. You can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osiXZnZosaA

A couple notes on segment 3:

My least favorite segment so far, so much luck manipulation. But anyways, The segment isn't perfect, I miss the jumpslash into the monkey in cage cutscene, and goat herding could have been a little better. However, for the amount of time I spent with this segment (at least 18 hours) I am happy with it and ready to move on. The total segment time is: 5:40 which brings my run time up to 8:44. Segment 4 doesn't seem too hard, I should be done with it hopefully soon.

Ok, thanks, I've been looking at Salamoj's segments, but since he only made it to the third one I'll check your's out.

Ok, finished segment four with a time of 4:06, the segment can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esA7GoETwcM

Some notes:

This was a quite enjoyable segment for me, a nice treat before the torture of the sword and shield skip. This segment was pretty much flawless, except for one slightly off jump at the end. I really didn't have too much trouble with this segment, the only thing that ever screwed me up was my encoder lagging out D: So yeah, enjoy the segment!

I think you may need to up the quality of your segments.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK82t46v7vE <-- This segment, equivalent to yours, is significantly faster (I didn't watch either segment, just looking at the timing).

Out of curiousity, what are your motivations for running TP? If it is just for fun, you can probably keep going. But if you want to get a high quality run, I'd suggest revisiting some of the segments you've already done and work a bit more on optimizing them. It will be more rewarding in the end when you look at the finished product (trust me, having early segments that you are unhappy with at the end of a long run is an awful feeling).

100% agree. Your newest segment didn't seem like much of an improvment over your first recorded try, your goat herding was like 3 or 4 seconds slower than your first video. Another big tip I can give you is to practice practice practice each segment for a couple hours before starting to record attempts (saves time in the long run and makes segments easier to complete). Go through the segment slowly, look for optimizations and learn each part of the segment inside and out. You should always be on-par or faster than a segment that's been released before.

Holy crap! I thought I had a great 4th segment, I'll be redoing that one for sure.

My motivations for running this game are for fun, and for a good time. I do feel like sometimes I am rushing the segments, especially the 3rd segment, which was a pain in the ass, so I took the first thing that was close enough to perfect. What's really pissing me off is that no one has done a run exactly like mine, so I've got nothing to really compare my run to. Of course there are other runs, like the one ringrush linked that have similar or identical segments. Guess part of me is still left in the single segment world, back when I tried Ocarina of Time RTA, so yeah, I've got to step it up.

If you really want to have a good time, restart your run, a tip I can give you is: LIMIT YOUR LOST SECONDS OVER THE PLAYED MINUTES.
I allow myself to lost 1 second per minute played, if the segment is 3-4 minutes long, if the segment is 5 minutes or longer te 5 seconds lost per minute is ok, like in my run at segment 1, 1:00 minute long and 1 second lost (can you find it??), segment 30 (31??) well Arbiter's Ground's, thugh I haven´t uploaded it, it was 14:07 minutes long, with around 15 seconds lost. What I want to say is, do the route 3 or 4 times, speedrun it and get a nice time, then, only then, you will have a great time cuz you will learn each part. I have to admit I have only done the BiT run only once (yay!) but actually I had beat the EMS route several times with recordable times, the route is practically the same.
I just don´t want you to quit your run when you'r facing the rupee dive, or morpheel withour zora armor, and please do houndreds of little timesavers, many people just say: "nah! it saves only 5 seconds" or so, well, a good amount of 5 seconds timesavers add valious minutes to the saved time. Do your best.

Ok, I think I'll do that, I'll be playing through the route for the next few days, then maybe through the route again, and I'll start all over on the first segment

Yeah segmented running takes a specific mindset and process to be enjoyable and preformed well. Playing through a segment once or twice successfully and then rushing into recorded attempts is the worst thing you can possibly do, it's frustrating because you'll mess up the little stuff you didn't practice enough and it wastes lots of time in the long run. Play the segments relaxed and learn them well, find time savers, and then once you can play through the segment to the end quickly and consistently, then you should start recording attempts. Referencing other people's runs and asking people here on the forums about anything you're not sure of is key as well.

I rushed at the begining of my Star Wars SotE run and I look back now and see that I could have easily saved 5 easy seconds in segment 2, 5+ seconds in segment 3 if I was more patient, etc. By the time I was half way through the run I had gotten much better at running the game than when I started and the later segments came easier and contained smoother play. You should master your playing ability before you start recording.

Ok, that sounds good. On a different note, does anybody have any tips on the sword and shield skip? Pushing the Bokoblin is difficult for me.

I think that you're a great speedrunner, but please don't rush segments. I've been waiting for someone to do a tp BiT any%, and finish it, for a long time. I agree with aleckermit that you should practice each segment for a few hours, but if nothing else, record every attempt of you segments, then compare them and post the best one.  :)

Thanks, I really want to finish this run, but I don't think that will happen until I become more familiar with my route and practice the segments some more. I will finish this run.

And thanks for the sword and shield skip tips, I'm getting it pretty consistently now.

Yeah... 21 is honestly pretty bad herding considering the amount of effort you put into it. The record is 15 so you're losing 6 seconds on goats alone. For a segmented run you should be coming in at 17-18 at the very highest.

I took a stab at the first few segments a few months ago. Here are your times to beat: 1:01 on segment 1, 1:46 on segment 2, 5:34 on segment 3. For the rest, TpFox and chimpas's runs are a great reference. And just so you know I might do the rest of the run at some point, so you might not be without competition forever.

My rupee dive video is outdated. You can save several more seconds. Use the dig spot I pass up at around 6 seconds in and try to optimize it as best as possible. To get the dive, use a sword slash just before the boomerang and rupee touch you. The timing is hell.

You do need a hacked wii <_<. However, the app to backup GCN saves doesn't work with TP. So you would have to mail the memory card to the runners.

You can practice the diving part of the trick by doing it off of the heart piece at the forest temple, but I've never tried it myself.

For me, rupee dive is still incredibly difficult to this day. I've practiced it quite a bit. The only reason I ever even considered it was because I was messing around in Kakariko gorge and accidentally did a heart piece dive there. I figured it might work with a rupee and realized if it did the fishing rod could be skipped. And I still can't do it quickly. My faster rupee dive video is at least 20 seconds slower than what it should be in a speed run.

A good spot to practice is at the gorge. If you have another different save file with bombs, blow up the rock containing yellow and blue rupees. They won't disappear. Target a rupee, go to the edge, swivel the camera to a side view of Link, and swing your sword just as the rupee is about to touch your back.

This might help because you'll have a somewhat similar setup in lake hylia. In lake hylia, dig (remember to use the dig spot I pass at 6 seconds in my video...don't dig in the spot I did or you'll waste time), run a bit, turn into a human, target rupee, go to the edge, side view of Link, swing just before rupee touches your back.

Ok, It's been a while, but I think I'll be picking this run back up again, I've been working on improving my times, and running through the route. So far I've finished the first 3 segments again, with an improvement of 1 second on segment 1, 3 seconds on segment 2, and 4 seconds on segment 3.

Edit: Just got a great segment 4 at 3 minutes 58 seconds, don't know how it was 2 seconds faster than tpfox's but it was

Edit2:

Ahem, triple post

Segment 5 is now complete, surprisingly, didn't take me very long to get. I got a time of 1:27, which comes out to be 1 second faster than tpfox's sword and shield skip

I think you can segment at Bo's house in between herding and the sumo match.  It might make the luck manipulation a little bit easier.

I'm pretty sure you'd lose time, because you would have to go to bo's house after saving... But I'm not certain.

Segment 6 is done and uploaded to youtube. It is done in 3:14, which is about 3 seconds quicker than tpfox's equivalent segment. Comparing my segments to tpfox's makes me feel better about them. Only one real screw up, and some bugs are taken out by a nice quickspin

Actually, ABChimpas did it in his Wii BIT run:

I think it works in GCN as well because the any% routes are the same at segment 3.

I didn't know saving in the house would have you be in the house after loading back up, oh well, I got a good segment 3, but it's definitely not a bad choice to split that segment into 2
