There are a few problems with the new main page (apart from the credits and links not being where they are supposed to be unless you scroll, but I was told that will be fixed).
I made a screenshot showing the problems. I'm not nitpicking, I just think Arcryte can make it perfect. ^^ http://zeldaspeedruns.com/junk/zsrmainproblems.png

Oh and btw. I think we should have a dedicated forum to every Zelda. I mean we don't have any other things to cover here, so why not? You could make a category for 2D and one for 3D Zeldas...

IRC login page (userpass.html) and applet page (gopjirc.html) are pimped to match the site!
I also spent forever figuring out how to customize the applet's parameters. It's got a custom color scheme to match the forums now :)
Also the images over the top of them link back to the main page.

Also, can we invert the "Posts | Topics" so that topics comes first? I think that flows better.

how about adding a shout box on this here forums ^ ^
Or make the IRC chat right on the forums.
:P
I like shout boxes ^ ^

why not just be on the irc then, I kinda hate how shoutboxes are just temporary chat. Irc is better for that I think, plus it wastes a bit of forum space :S

I don't know if others would like this, but for new people starting to get into Zelda speedrunning, a subforum like "Welcome" or something, where newer users can get to know you guys? Or we can post to say Hi and stuff.

Just a suggestion, but the forums are looking great

COSMO! It's nice it shows the orange envelope when a thread inside a section has new posts, but is there any way we can also have one of those kinda envelopes to show that on the actual thread? Because if there are stickied threads then the one with the newest post may not necessarily be the one on top, or then again one of the stickied ones on top could be the one that was last replied in. That way we don't have to compare post times to see what the most recent posts were in!

Title: Re: Improvements, suggestions, etc.
Post by: Cosmo on August 31, 2009, 11:08:27 PM
Yo, there should be like a little "new" symbol when there's a new post, next to the thread.

I just use the 'Replies (http://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/forums/index.php?action=unreadreplies)' link up at the top right (Show new replies to your posts. (http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php?action=unreadreplies) at SDA)...

Mind you you miss new threads thatway, but thats why I periodically browse the subforums themselves...

So we will be able to host runs? That's sweet if so. I always thought of individual temple runs or something on the site; where each temple would have it's own category of low%, any%, and 100%. And each run must follow the current route. (not including segments for each temple) For example, if I did an any% run of Snowhead Temple, I would not have the goron mask since in the current any% route you would skip the goron mask.... If I did a 100% run of the Forest Temple in OoT, I'd obviously collect all the required items but do the run in one segment. (The 100% route is done in multiple segments but for the site it'd be done in one) Idk, just something I thought of a while ago for the site... <_< What do you guys think?

yo cos, jiano still wasnt sold on the hearts so we changed em to be more uniform but look alot better. I like the theme now, grayed out or red. we tried pink and red it was too valentine's lol. Now its real easy to quickly look and see every thread you post in though which is nice, since there is lots of contrast betwene the gray and the red. It also follows the similar scheme of the 1st page with the magic armor so there's good uniformity.

Also made the icons for the threads. Currently it seems that simply placing them in the folder won't let them show up. SOOOO... I had to simply replace the ones that were there. This means that for the time being we have 12 of them. Me and Jiano excercised judgement as to which masks were best.

Except ZSR doesn't host a single speedrun (yet) =p

SDA has their own motto...
"Playing through games quickly, skillfully, and legitimately."

Zelda! The game speedruns are made for.

In my opinion this describes the site in a good and simple way.

However, speed runs weren't made for Zelda. I guess you could say "Zelda! The game made for speed runs." Although that's not entirely true either considering how it probably wasn't the developers' intent. How about "ZeldaSpeedRuns.com--Because we fucking want to."

Scrolling News added to main page, I'll soon make it a link to a news page. That way you can click it and see the whole history for the main news section.
Also finished the IRC page so its got the corrected images and stuff.

Changed the color saturation for the game menu glows. Looks alot better I'd say. Also Slowi, great job with the RSS-feeds, awesome :)

Yo Cos, I'm thinking we should make a README that anyone who will be working on Pages or has the FTP password must read. Just explaining things like not deleting anything, erasing other people's changes if you're both updating content, ways to safeguard against those things, and the like.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I know I at least never saw it in this topic.

When submitting an individual dungeon run of any kind, we're asked to submit an MP4 video file, which is easy to come across thanks to YouTube. However, this video is then put on a stream based on this site using the JW player. This is fine, except a lot of people will then download temple runs and upload them to their own YouTube.

I know everyone can download YouTube videos and do the same if they really wanted to, but stealing is a lot less likely if the video streams are hosted there. So, if the player chooses to, and offers the same video (which you can download from YouTube) to you, couldyou provide the option of having video(s) streamed via YouTube instead? I know this would definitely motivate me to submit some. ^_^

Sections for more than just Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. We need Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, etc to have sections full with videos and pages of tricks and speed runs just like the other sections.

The problem is that there is no interest in these games currently, so no one wants to do any of the pages.  There's a plan in progress to do a collective 2D zelda games page, which would include LoZ, AoL, ALttP, LA, OoA, OoS, and TMC.  The basic structure would be the same, but a lack of tricks for the games (except maybe LA) means it would be a waste of space to make individual sections for each.

clarifying the reverse bottle adventure page(OoT) so that the effects can be made sense of if you dont have a degree in computer science would be nice. a simple if you have x on c right and catch y in your b bottle these are the effects. this would certainly make it easier to understand. currently the only way that i can get my desired solution is to find a video of someone doing it with what i want as the effect

Just a suggestion: maybe start including controller icons and flashing in "red" (or similar to that effect) what inputs are being pressed to match on-screen action or something in your videos, and slowing them down a bit?  That would have been extremely appreciated on the DoT Skip video.

Sorry everybody for bumping an old thread, but I suggest a spam box section, or something.

Here's why:
Recently a member created a new thread in 'Other Zeldas' about some abortion program. See here: http://forums.zeldaspeedruns.com/index.php?topic=1046.msg17532#new

I'm quite sure that this stuff is not what we want to see on this site. We may soon reach the point where spam starts to trickle in.

Edit: ok quote removed

Considering the number of spam accounts created each day, I think the spam problem can be improved. That said, it's not that big of a problem as it once was about a year or two? ago, but at it's current rate it is easily managed.

Also, please don't quote spam, it only assists the spambot's prime directive to flood pages with links.

I have no idea why I decided to quote the spam, kind of a fail on my part. But it looks like it happened again, this time in the Wind Waker forums, by swmwq8097, and I already see a trend, which may or may not continue: the topic titles are 'blah blah blah (about some products or programs or whatever that you pay for) XXXX' (a four-digit number)

Another common trend for spammers is to use emails like 'edu-7breuwy8rct@o8x3hr8wyrxw.c om' (space added to prevent the auto-hyperlink) and, not so reliable (sometimes legitimate users have strange, garbled-looking names, I had one like that at one point) is that they will have usernames that don't contain any legible words, or are themselves more ads.

This is known. They're bots, not actual people. That's why the emails/threads/usernames look like random nonsense. The spam is being managed as best as it can by the moderators and admins, so just try your best to ignore it until it gets removed.

Furthermore, users can use the "report to moderator" button at the bottom of a spam post to highlight it as an issue, so that's something Kzar et al. can do to help.

Do you guys think ZSR could benefit from having sections covering the mini-boss and boss fights in these games? Having trouble with bosses like Phantom Ganon, Goht, and one-cycling Dead Hand. The dungeon strategies don't cover the fights, which are an important part of running, and some strats are less than obvious, especially things like one-cycling Twinrova and Phantom.

A boss strategy page would be a nice thing to add. We just need someone to write one up.

I could contribute some of the boss strats that I do understand, and I would be more than happy to do so. The ones I would need someone else to write for OoT are:

Phantom Ganon (with the arrow trick and one-cycle)
The spin-slash method for Gohma (I just ISG, could never get the spin to work right)
Twinrova
Dead Hand one-cycle (I've done it but I usually just feel it out. I'm sure there are reliable methods worked out)

I would be no help in any of the other games, I'm bad at MM/WW/TP. I mean, I'm bad at OoT, but I'm really bad at the other games.

I'd be happy to do it. I cleaned it up a little a couple weeks ago, but it could use some extra help.

We need an app for the "Post your pic" thread only. It auto loads those pictures and allows you to draw fake mustaches on everyone.

I don't think Apple or Android will endorse a ZSR app... Then again, I may be wrong. iPhone claims to have an app for just about everything. A ZSR app would add more to "just about everything" than the shitty twitch app and an app that has a complete collection of every sound file in every Zelda game (my brother has the latter, I forget what it's called).

I'm sure Apple would accept a ZSR app. There's strange apps. It all depends on the scheme of ZSR and all that junk. I don't remember much about making iOS apps, but a ZSR app for just the pages doesn't seem too hard to make if you know how. I guess it could also include the forums, but still. I personally wouldn't mind a ZSR app. Mainly for the forums though. If you don't mind waiting a year and a half, I'm gonna take the mobile app design class at my school next year. (Yes, we have Mobile App Design, Video Game Design, CS, and AP CS)

I spend a lot of time working on OoT (3d) mini-bosses, and could help with them. How would you want it submitted though?

I would recommend using frame dump and audio dump. I could make them if need be.

I think the best way would be to create a thread on the OoT 3D boards, just in case you forget something important.

I have a quick suggestion about the leaderboards for Link's Awakening.  I think there should be a split in the any% between the DX version of the game, and the original version, considering the original version has a very large number of text skips that aren't available in the DX version.  Or, at the very least, make a pull down option to denote whether it's original or DX (like the English/Japanese version difference) to make it more organized.

Also, the 100% board for LA haven't worked in quite some time.  I know there are several people (myself included) interested in running the game 100%, so it would be awesome if the 100% board could get up and running sometime soon.

Thanks!

^Just a quick bump for that post.  Split Link's Awakening Any% into S+Q and no S+Q, and fix the 100% leaderboards so it'll actually work.  Pretty please, with sugar on top?  :P

Congratulations on the site rework.

I'm going to make a suggestion on Zelda 2 boards, though.  I know for some games, the differences between the Japanese and US releases are minor.  That is *not* the case with the difference between the FDS and NES versions of Zelda 2.  Zelda 2 US and Japan.  Japanese categories should be separate categories.

There are *major* differences. The leveling system is different.  The experience awards are different. The mid bosses and palace bosses differ. Any% and NG+ palace routing is also very different, due to differences in how items are picked up in game.  It's really a different game, as it wasn't just ported from FDS to NES. They changed a ton.

It's not like some games where you can just adjust for text differences, and you might be missing a glitch or two.   Japanese times just aren't comparable with US times.  In fact, while for 100% AK the Japanese version should be faster, the US version is going to be faster for most other categories. So it's not even a direct comparison that way!

Also, you're missing NG+, NG+ Glitch, and Any% Glitch, basically, the three categories I personally run :)

Just some Zelda 2 suggestions.  And again, congratulations on the new site designs.

First off, I wanted to say thanks so much for the site update.  It looks great!  Just one nitpicky thing.  For Link's Awakening, you have 100% listed in the b&w version, but not the DX version, but the standard version to run 100% on is the DX version, because it has an extra dungeon, and an entire extra sidequest.  So if you could just move the 100% leaderboards over to DX instead of b&w, that would be perfect.  Again, that's me being super nitpicky, thanks again for the great work!  :D

It appears that editors have to re-apply now that the update has gone live, so I don't know if these features has been added or not.

But about a year ago in the IRC I discussed about the possibility of having nested sections in the navigation menu, and I believe it still hasn't been added. Or maybe it was decided that it wasn't a necessary feature.
Take this page as an example:
http://zeldaspeedruns.com/oot3d/area/gerudo-desert
It would be cleaner with a nested navigation menu that looked something like this:
Code:
Enter Gerudo Fortress as a Child
Get past the Wooden Gate as a Child
Megaflip Method
Unloaded Method
Reach the Ice Arrows without any keys
Crossing the quicksand
or possibly
Code:
Gerudo Valley
Enter Gerudo Fortress as a Child
Gerudo's Fortress
Get past the Wooden Gate as a Child
Megaflip Method
Unloaded Method
Gerudo Training Grounds
Reach the Ice Arrows without any keys
Haunted Wasteland
Crossing the quicksand

This way the navigation menu is easier to use, and it is clear that the "megaflip method" is a method for getting past the wooden gate.
Another solution would be to add an official syntax for methods, and have it be displayed in the nav menu in such a manner that it is clear that they are methods of a specific trick.

It's also worth mentioning that the triforce font doesn't have a percent/% symbol, it displays a picture of link. So pages with titles such as any% look weird.

And the site doesn't seem to have a footer with any copyright or contact information. That may have been on purpose though.

And it is still missing a favicon.

I think the old version actually allowed to do that, but now it looks like this

Now the methods are left instead.

I had something like this in mind:
http://imgur.com/a/odWG8
These screenshots were taken with a script I created for Tampermonkey(chrome)/Greasemonkey(firefox)
It nests any h1/h2/h3 (up until the specified header level) to the first header tag located above it that has a lower level.
List items with a nested list are displayed with a yellow triforce symbol.
You can toggle the nested lists by clicking on the yellow symbols.
I've made it so that if the page lack a h1, it puts all h2 within an item that goes by the pages name.
And a lot more.

Here's the script: (added comments to pretty much the entire code so that anyone can understand what's going on)
http://pastebin.com/8SmkPu5P
Run it after the original code has loaded to overwrite the Navi Menu with mine.

It is a relatively simple code, but it helps me to navigate.

I think it is a great improvement to the navi menu myself, and that's why I made it to begin with.
It looks good on most pages, but there are a few out there with a rather odd header format, like this one: http://zeldaspeedruns.com/ss/area/eldin-volcano
I assume the reason they have such weird layouts is because they wanted specific headers to be displayed in the Navi Menu. A nested menu would solve that though, making such layouts unnecessary.

Edit: Added some major updates to the script.

Could mini-games be added to the speed running categories?
I'm not sure which games have mini-games within them, but A Link Between Worlds is fairly popular on Cyberscore (link) and I'd love to be able to submit my own times here as well. After all this is Zelda and these are speed runs!

I posted this in the ZSR Leaderboards thread but I'm unsure if that's the right place to post it or not, so I'm posting here just in case.

Could we change the leaderboards in a way that unverified runs are hidden by default and have a checkbox to optionally show them, and another change so that editors will no longer be able to verify their own runs? Also a notifier to editors for when a time is submitted would be convenient.

I think it would be nice if we could see a history or changelog of Route writeups on the game pages. In newer games like MM3D the route pages change a lot, and it's not always obvious what is different. Wikis commonly have this feature, though it doesn't necessary have to be that robust.
