Title: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on May 09, 2015, 09:42:38 PM
Eumeus14 and I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in a TAS competition since MTA hasn't continued his in so long. Here's the challenge we came up with. Let us know if you would like to join. I'll put more information about deadlines and stuff if enough people want to join.  :)

http://imgur.com/tmA1OQ6 ALSO no goron tunic

Bizhawk savestate: https://www.mediafire.com/?r9da7259mpx2qei (only works for version 1.8.1, sorry)
Mupen savestate: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ejxwq5vypik05ra/Task_1.st

Try to have it done by May 27, 2015

If the due date isn't too short i will probably join this TAS Competition. To be honest i really like the idea of giving a Zelda TAS Competition another try.

Okay. I'll probably set the date to the end of the month. Is May 26-27 good? I'll be out of town on the 28th

darb....are we really that dumb xD ? what kinda file is this "task" file...
we cant open it with mupen o.0
how are we supposed to open it xD

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on May 10, 2015, 04:53:03 PM
You said you wanted a zip file, so i put the state file in a zip file. ._. i'm kinda confused. Why didn't the original state file load for you?

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: GCTK24 on May 10, 2015, 05:09:57 PM
the file you uploaded is not a savefile .... a normal savefile would be .st or st1 and so on :)
we really want to do this tas but we cant open the file
if we select run in mupen and then load as we cant open it it doesnt even show up so my guess is it has to be some other file

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on May 10, 2015, 05:17:14 PM
Okay. I'm really sorry. I had to have my friend make the mupen save state for me because I use bizhawk, but i'll try to get a working mupen state for you. I've never done a TAS competition before so I'm not familiar with doing this kind of stuff :O

I'd love for you to! Don't worry about experience. It would be impressive to me if you just finished this. There's another entrant who doesn't have any TASing experience either so you are up against some fair game.

Title: Re: TAS Competition

Is it allowed to change the Item on the B-Button?

Title: Re: TAS Competition

as long as it isnt one of the banned items. It can't be any projectile, so no elemental arrows on B

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: Amateseru on May 12, 2015, 02:04:53 PM
I think I'll try to join it :)

Is it a problem if I use Bizhawk 1.9.x ?

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: keymakr on May 12, 2015, 06:23:17 PM
I might give it a try if I can get the time. Good thing I know just about nothing about TASing this game Lol.

Cool challenge tho. I look forward to seeing what everyone does.

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on May 12, 2015, 08:37:51 PM
Amateseru: You can use 1.9.x, but you'll have to get your own save state. If you decide to do that, just make sure that the pillar blocking the loading zone to Death Mountain Crater is pulled out. But for future tasks, I'll provide a savestate from 1.9.x so everyone can use it. I'm sorry for the inconvenience of this task.

Keymakr: That'd be awesome if you could join. So far we have close to 10 entrants/people interested which is beyond my expectations. The more the better. Also, don't worry about inexperience. There are a couple others who are interested who have never TASed either. Also for your first TAS, it's an accomplishment simply to finish a TAS regardless of how unoptimized it is.

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: Amateseru on May 13, 2015, 11:16:37 AM
No problem for the savestate, I know I just have some trouble with 1.8.1 on my computer, not sure why... But I don't see what block you're talking about ?

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on May 13, 2015, 11:32:20 AM
you know the block in darunia's room that you have to pull? to open the path to death mountain crater? that one

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on May 13, 2015, 12:11:52 PM
make sure you pull it out because both the mupen savestate and the bizhawk savestate have it pulled

Oh ok Sure no problem

Just sent my submission to your emaul Eumeus. Let me know if you have any issues with it or it desyncs or anything.

My first TAS, so i guess it isn't bad. My movement from the skulltula token to the lava is hilariously bad though.

My submission has been filed, I've got a good feeling about this. *poses*

Nothing I did was fast but for not knowing how to record a video in Bizhawk three hours ago I think I did okay.

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: TheCowness on June 03, 2015, 06:30:29 PM
Aw sweet, they put me first in the video.  Probably because it was the best submission.  I mean, look at how fast those backflip hovers were!

That really wasn't bad for learning how to record a TAS and then doing the whole video in three hours.  If I did angled hovers instead of using hover boots (which would've only taken like ten minutes but I wanted to go to bed) I could've maybe been under a minute.  I don't think I saw anyone else use hover boots for anything, but I like my way of collecting the skull token.  It looked like someone did a 0,0,0 glitch to kill the skull by dropping a bomb in the bottom of GC; I did that on accident once but couldn't reproduce it :-X If you killed the skull that way, you should be able to collect the skull with hover boots out of the HESS, which would look extremely cool.

I'm looking forward to actually putting time into the next task.

Anyone else notice the guys who are hosting the competition just happened to win the first round?

Task 2 is here! Here's the challenge:

http://i.imgur.com/JkyLx0e.png NO elemental arrows either, in case you were wondering

Savestates:

Bizhawk (1.9.4) (J version): https://www.mediafire.com/?6qs5oarfwoj5gqp

This one will be due on June 24, 2015. Let me know if you have questions or problems. Good job everyone who did task 1. I hope to see you all again for task 2!

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: TheCowness on June 04, 2015, 06:10:09 PM
Wow, cool, touchpad, just refresh the window like two seconds before I submit my post, thanks.  What was I saying again.  Bah.

--------

I've got a couple of random TAS-noob questions here to make sure I'm not doing things wrong (I'm using BizHawk 1.9.4 at the moment):

1) Unlike pause buffering when you push the buttons on the frame you want Link to react to them, when I use frame advance it seems I need to input everything two visual frames early.  Is that normal?  It makes aiming ESSes really annoying.

2) I started on task two last night and my video immediately desyncs.  If I start playing it and press F1 to load save state one it plays perfectly, though.  I made that state just after starting the video and repositioning Link.  Anyone have any good ideas on how to salvage this? I'm thinking about copying the save state, starting a new movie, and opening both movies in a text editor and copying the inputs from the desync'd video over.  The movie's only like six seconds long, though; it wouldn't kill me to try redoing what I did last night and get Link in a better ending position.  But I also doubt this will be the only time ever that I have a video desync on me, so let's ask now.

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on June 04, 2015, 07:15:51 PM
@TheCowness

1) yes that is normal. even in normal casual gameplay there is a 2 frame input delay; it's just inherent in the game itself. Yeah, it is kind of annoying to deal with, but that's where note taking comes in handy. I like to write down my frame numbers for every input i do so that I can map out what frame I need to make future inputs on, because obviously it is impossible to determine what you need to do just by looking at the screen.

2) i have no idea man :/ I've never heard of that happening.

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: TheCowness on June 05, 2015, 02:38:18 AM
Doesn't look like I can fix it, but whatever.  I tried copying over the input list and got an error saying something about the header.  The .bk2 file looks like it's a bunch of files mashed together with a lot of binary data, so I didn't really have high hopes for editing it successfully in Notepad++.  I kinda wanted to redo the beginning anyway so I can look EVEN COOLER but hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: darb_meister30 on June 05, 2015, 02:39:37 AM
it shouldnt happen again. ive never heard of bizhawk doing that

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: Amateseru on June 05, 2015, 05:45:29 AM
It loos like you didn't see my pm Darb so I'll ask my question here (anyway this may interest some people)

When an ennemy is considered as killed ? I mean let's say I killed a scrub but I'm far enough to it that if I turn the camera it will be unloaded (just like the deku baba in no RBA/WW in the forest temple)... so do we have to wait for the ennemy to completely disappear ?

Edit: also since I'm pretty new in the TAS community, I was wondering if it's possible to have a positive speed of 18 and how to do it ?

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: Eumeus14 on June 05, 2015, 02:41:57 PM
@amataseru As long as an enemy has been damaged for the final time, that would count as being killed. As for positive 18 speed, you can do a forward A slide, which is done by shielding damage in a roll, then alternating between Down and neutral every visual frame. This is also how weirdshots work

Title: Re: TAS Competition
Post by: Amateseru on June 05, 2015, 07:02:12 PM
Ok big thanks for both answers

Edit: well actually... I just can't A-slide, I don't know how to do it and I guess it's possible with a double chu explosion, would it be possible to have at least a pastebin somewhere ?

Also that would be nice if someone has useful values on MHS for Bizhawk 1.9.4 :3 (or if someone knows by how much you have to move the adresses between 1.9.1 and 1.9.4 because I just can't find the good number u_u)

Editedit: Got what I wanted, huge thanks to Andzura http://pastebin.com/48Kwp2fF

Got my submission sent in.  Had another desync tonight that I noticed after I finished, but it was close to the end so whatever.  I probably didn't lose more than half a second from redoing it hastily.  The whole thing's pretty sloppy but it looks so cooooooooooooooooooooooool.  And I think my strategy was really effective.  But WE WILL SEE.

You can also void out with a ground clip but that's far away from the ladder #LilZ

Seems simple enough for my first TAS :)

Two questions though:

1) Does this have to be done as adult link?

2) Can we use the keys, or do we need to have 4 unused keys?

It would be neat if the next TAS was something child related, since the first 4 have all been adult. I plan on joining the next competition, just started TASing a few days ago but it'll still be fun.  ;D
