Title: Nintendo Power Zelda Games Ranking
Post by: SD2 on October 22, 2009, 12:42:58 AM
In their newest issue (don't ask why I'm still getting the magazine in the first place), Nintendo Power made decided to rank every Zelda game that has been released, as well as picking their favourite item, dungeon, boss, etc. of all time.  Though I strongly disagree with most of the choices, here's the list:

13: Adventure of Link
12: Four Swords Adventures
11: Majora's Mask
10/9: Ages/Seasons (NP gives the advantage to Seasons, citing Rod of Seasons > Harp of Ages)
8: Minish Cap
7: Phantom Hourglass
6: Wind Waker
5: Link's Awakening (the original and DX were grouped together)
4: Twilight Princess
3: The Legend of Zelda (the original)
2: Link to the Past
1: Ocarina of Time

Best...
Weapon: Bow
Hook: Light/Dark World (LttP)
Item: Double Clawshots (TP)
*Princess* Zelda: Wind Waker
Boss: Argorok (TP)
Overworld: Minish Cap
Story Moment: Beneath the Waves (WW)
Tune: Overworld Theme (TLoZ)
Secret: Second Quest (TLoZ)
Dungeon: Goron Mines (TP)
Enemy: Octorok
Supporting Character: Midna (TP)
Ganon: Ocarina of Time

Feel free to rant all you want.

EDIT: I'm gonna make my own lists, I suppose.

Games:
13: AoL
12: FSA
11: PH
10: WW
9: TP
8: OoS
7: MC
6: OoA
5: TLoZ
4: LA
3: LttP
2: MM
1: OoT

Seeing TP lose to all four games to be released on the GB/GBA makes me happy. :)

Best...
Weapon: Sword
Hook: Light/Dark World (LttP) (Wow, I actually agree with NP on something)
Item: Ocarina
Princess Zelda: OoT
Boss: Smog (OoA)
Overworld: Oracle of Ages
Story Moment: Zelda/Sheik revealing
Tune: Ballad of the wind fish (LA)
Secret: None
Dungeon: Shadow Temple (OoT)
Enemy: Octorok
Supporting Character: Ezlo (MC)
Ganon: Ocarina of Time

How can MM and OoT have a huge gap? I hated NP ever since their shitty melee article.

Here's my list:
7: Phantom Hourglass
6: Zelda 1
5: Twilight Princess
4: A Link to the Past
3: The Wind Waker
2: Ocarina of Time
1: Majora's Mask

Best...
Weapon: guilded sword
Hook: glitches
Item: bombchu
Zelda: Wind Waker
Boss: Goht (lmfao)
Overworld: A Link to the Past
Story Moment: OoT ending
Tune: Stone Tower
Secret: Arwings (oh, and Cen says he knows how to do this without AR, but refuses to tell. Not sure about the validity, but w/e)
Dungeon: Fire Temple
Enemy: Guay
Supporting Character: Sheik
Ganon: Ocarina of Time

Sorry, the best Zelda in the second list is actually the best Princess Zelda.  My bad for not putting that.

I realized that immediately after and edited it. I'm surprised you saw it.

Wow NP blows ass at ratings.... Majora's Mask before Wind Waker and the first LoZ?

10: Link to the Past
9: Twilight Princess
8: Four Swords
7: Wind Waker

I can't really decide what I should have after the top 5, so that should probably be changed a bit.

1. ALttP (First Zelda game we got in our home. Great music, great graphics, 2D is awesome, I love this game!)
2. LA (Best GBx game there is, no question about it. I've finished this game endless of times and was the first Zelda game I owned.)
3/4. OoA/OoS (Keeping the graphics and gameplay from LA make these two awesome at once.)
5. MM (I like this more than for example OoT because of the more sidequests and stuff to do. Awesome game.)
6/7 LoZ/AoL (I'm having a hard time to decide these two. They are overall two great games and a bit harder than the rest, which I like!)
8. TWW (I hate the boat, but there are so many sidequests and stuff to do, which I love.)
9. OoT (Highly overrated, but it isn't a bad game at all.)
10. FSA (I love the ALttP style and it's a fun multiplayer if you can get some more people that is...)
11. TP (The expectations were too high for this game, it was way too easy for example.)
12. MC (Lot of stuff to do at least, that's good. But this game just didn't do it for me...)
13. PH (Could have been tons of times better than it became. Controls were often annoying, stupid boat, no good music, no heart piece etc.)
14. FS (Stop forgetting this game, morons!! The "only" reason to why it's down here is because of the fact that you can't play it alone.)

1. MM
2. OOT
3. ALTTP

Top 3 right there.

1. OoT
2. MM
3. OoA
4. OoS
5. LA

Don't care about the others. Also, ALttP is overrated tripe. People only like it because of nostalgia. :)

I agree.

1:OoT
2:MM
3:TWW
4:PH  (yes, I loved it)
5:TMC
6&7:OoA/TP
8:OoS
9:FSA
10:ALTTP
11:TLOZ
12:FS (had good times on it)
13:AoL

Unrated: LA (I've played this game a loooooooong time ago, I should buy it because playing on emulator sucks against console)

If anything Adventures of Link is by far the most underrated Zelda game ever. At least with LA, most people don't hate it and will recomend it to other people.

Thats a horrible list.  MM 11th and midna as best supporting character >_>.  It should look more like this

13: Adventure of Link
12: Four Swords Adventure
11: Legend of Zelda
10:Twilight Princess
9: Phantom Hourglass
8: Oracle of Seasons
7: Oracle of Ages
6: The Wind Waker
5: The Minish Cap
4: Link's Awakening
3: A Link to the Past
2: Majora's Mask
1: Ocarina of Time

Best...
Weapon: Bow
Hook: Light/Dark World (LttP)
Item: Bombs
*Princess* Zelda: Wind Waker
Boss: Twinmold (MM)
Overworld: Minish Cap
Story Moment: Beneath the Waves (WW)
Tune: Gerudo Valley (OoT)
Secret: Second Quest (TLoZ)
Dungeon: Fire Temple (OoT)
Enemy: Stalfos
Supporting Character: Tatl
Ganon: Ocarina of Time

1. Ocarina of Time
2. A Link to the Past
3. Wind Waker

Those are the top Zeldas there.

Nintendo Power has an alright list in my opinion. Why is Wind Waker behind Twilight Princess? Twilight Princess brought nothing new to the series and seemed to remove things like the magic bar, mirror shield, element arrows, and non-linear gameplay.

LOL even Nintendo themselves hate MM xP

8. Adventure Of Link
7. The Legend Of Zelda
6. Four Swords Adventures
5. A Link To The Past (I don't have it anymore :(.)
4. Majora's Mask (Last place of the 4 3D Zelda games because Ganondorf doesn't excist in it and Zelda appears once in the game. It was much different from the other 3D Zelda games but it was not as good as in the others. The game was still very good.)
3. Twilight Princess (Too easy but everything else in this game was done excellent.)
2. Ocarina Of Time (A little harder than TP and it was done a little better than TP.)
1. The Wind Waker ( This game has a very good story and many good story moments. I love the graphics and the music and they did so many funny things in it. Absolutely the best Zelda game. =)

Weapon: Bow
Hook: What is that?
Item: Hookshot
Princess: TWW
Boss: Ganondorf (TWW)
Overworld: OoT
Story Moment: Hard to tell
Tune: Credits (TWW)
Secret: Changes after beating TWW (Outset Clothes all the time, Aryll has skull dress all the time and you understand Hyrule language.)
Dungeon: Tower of the Gods
Enemy: Stalfos (OoT)
Supporting Character: Midna
Ganon: OoT

I have never played the others and I don't have ALTTP anymore because my dad sold his NES and SNES stuff.

NP is full of casuals and MM is clearly a very hardcore game...

anyway, here's my ranks:

1/2. OoT/MM (i can't pick one of them and if i pick one i feel the other one is getting shafted)
3.TWW (i hate sailing but the game has some good moments)
4.TP (mostly because it can be broken and the dungeons are nice)
5/6. OaA/OoS (they are quite good and playing a linked game is unique)
7. LA (sorry, i played OoA/OoS first)
8. FSA (not much depth but very fun with 4 people)
(i never beat/haven't beaten the following games)
9. PH (no motivation to keep going)
10. ALttP (feels inferior to the GB games)
11. MC (same as with PH)
12. FS (only played it once but FSA was much better)

never played LoZ/AoL more than 5 mins.

Yeah, I've been raging at NP ever since I saw MM in 11th place. Probably not going to renew my subscription this year (that's not the only reason, but still)

5. Minish Cap
4. OoT
3. WW
2. TP
1. MM

I've played all except the OoS/OoA, but those are the only ones I beat and therefore are the only ones I actually like enough to rate. Handheld Zeldas are pretty crappy imo, I think Nintendo should just stick to 3D. OoT is so low because I got it in the collector's edition in 2003 so it was pretty outdated compared to the other ones, and I like MM a lot better. Also OoT is too long and starts to get boring once you reach the Fire Temple. TP and WW are interchangeable, better than OoT but neither come close to MM.

Weapon: Bow
Hook: Masks in MM
Item: Bombs
Princess: Don't care
Boss: Either Goht or Stallord
Overworld: TP
Story Moment: Saving Colin in TP
Tune: Overworld theme for the four areas outside of clock town (MM)
Dungeon: Snowhead
Enemy: Iron Knuckles
Supporting Character: Anju's Grandmother
Ganon: OoT

MM at number 11?  Really?  At least Link's Awakening got nicely high, though the Oracles are seriously underrated.

Anyways, mine

N/A: Four Swords Adventures (Never played it; can't rate)
13: Adventure of Link (it's just not really Zelda.  I mean, it's not a terrible game, but it's still the weakest)
12: Legend of Zelda (Good for its time, but it hasn't aged well tbh.)
11: Phantom Hourglass (I like PH, but it really has its flaws)
10: Minish Cap (really too short.  Considering Capcom made the Oracles, I'm kind of surprised by this)
9: Spirit Tracks (Train travel got a bit tedious, but there was some good stuff in this game)
8: Twilight Princess (So much potential to be good, but it kind of falls apart toward the end)
7: A Link to the Past (This is a really big step up from #8, mind you.  A solid game, and really the measuring stick to which all Zeldas should be compared.)
6: Wind Waker (yeah, I put this above ALttP.  It has its flaws, but it also brings something rare to the table: a good story.  Also one of the few Zeldas to really pull off its ending.)
5/4: Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages (I give the edge to Ages, but they're really close.  Both fine quality games that pulled off their gimmick well.)
3: Ocarina of Time (It's OoT, what more can I say?)
2: Link's Awakening (A well-presented story to go with classic Zelda action.  I actually can't think of any flaws right now; I'm even tempted to put this at number 1.)
1: Majora's Mask (What did you expect?  MM's got a very different feel to it.  In many ways, Termina feels like a more fleshed-out world than Hyrule ever has, as every character seems to have a backstory, and the locations have a real history to them.  It's just a wonderful game, and always keeps me coming back.)

Best...
Weapon: Fire Rod (always fun)
Hook: Rod of Seasons (This was really well-done)
Item: Magnetic Gloves!!
*Princess* Zelda: Spirit Tracks (She actually did something)
Boss: Majora's Wrath (ST and PH had some good ones, though)
Overworld: Majora's Mask
Story Moment: Kafei/Anju's wedding (LA and WW's endings were good, too)
Tune: Tal Tal Heights (kind of a hard one to call, really)
Secret: Second Quest (TLoZ) (no real comparison)
Dungeon: Forest Temple (OoT) (The Oracles had a bunch of neat ones, too)
Enemy: Iron Knuckles (always a challenge)
Supporting Character: Midna
Ganon: Wind Waker (WW:more than just your generic Ganon.  Plus the boss fight was easily the best Ganon fight yet.)

Hmm, I wrote a lot more than I expected.  Ah well.
