Title: Ocarina of Time TAS Competition V3
Post by: MrGrunz on February 03, 2012, 10:59:49 PM
TASK 6:

Enter Gerudo's Fortress as child coming from Gerudo Valley and obtain the 37th Heart Piece.

Timing starts at the frame you get control over link and ends when Link picks up the Heart Piece. Hovering is banned, ISG is allowed, though! You are allowed to use any items apart from Nayru's Love and Boomerang. There's no limit of Bombchus and Bombs.

Here's a Save State, so preparing for the task gets easier for you:
http://www.mediafire.com/?4v02c5vqkscgzzv

In order to submit, just sent Nahoc10 a message containing a download link of the m64 + Save Stat on youtube or send him an e-mail to the following address: coh_101@hotmail.com

Due Date: 26th February 2012

(If you need 1-2 more days of time, just tell me)

I'll go ahead and enter this one as well (TAS'ing OoT is a bit more fun then MM anyway)

And I'll make sure I don't forget about A-slides this time around. >.<

Grunz you still need to show yours and mine from the previous task :(

also this sounds fun, time to learn to analog slide! :)

I have a quick question about this. The savestate you posted does not have the slingshot on it. So is the slingshot allowed to be used? or does it have it be exactly like your savestate? If i am allowed to get the slingshot to help me do the task, would i have to count the time it takes me to get to the slingshot as part of the task, or could i get it before i start counting time and just start from where you have the savestate?

The savestate is just to help you are allowed to get slingshot

Pokey needs to tell us how to do this trick

I could make a beast TAS with it :)

Alright, I've entered with my first OoT TAS ever. I was not familiar with the bomb physics so I got a crappy time.
Good luck everyone! ^-^

When you record an .m64, it also creates and .st file with the same name as the m64. Send that one with it.

I just submitted my run to Nahoc, i hope it isn't too late. I accidentally sent it to MrGrunz cause I didnt read all of the first post. BTW, what is going on with this so far? Have there been enough submissions?

Yea there have been submissions by Grunz, RG, Pokey and Tyler, all of which have been timed, and I think a compilation video is in the works.

yeah, you did very nice for a beginner, much better than I when I started. would be cool to see you entering the next task as well  ;)

@kosmicd12
you forgot to use B to press the heart piece text away quickly  ;D
you probably could have gotten 5th place, if you did this right.

a few minutes after closing the task, nahoc told me, that bloob submitted a TAS as well. Turns out we have to change the ranking quite a bit. In fact, everybody gets pushed back for one place.

Compilation going to come soon.

Is the Compilation video going to have all the runs in it? or just the top 4-5? Just want to know before i upload a video of me doing this task, no real point if it will be in the compilation video
Heh, thanks for the compliment Grunz, I play the game in real time, so i have some experience with some glitches. I was going to try to do some analog slides and z-slides, but i couldnt figure out how to do them effectively, i only had a couple of Bloobieblahs videos to go by. I will gladly do more TAS tasks, its pretty fun. After i get enough experience i am planning on trying a 100% TAS of OoT.

Also one more thing:
I just attempted making a quick TAS with Mupen64 of the start of Ocarina of Time, from when I got control to when I got the Kokiri Sword, but for some reason it didn't remove the recording when I went back on the savestates, and now Link just does some random moves in his house. How do I fix this, or am I missing some setting?

Thanks again

EDIT: I tried re-recording it about 4 more times, and every time something went wrong, where something I had inputted didn't stay in the finished product.

It seems that your TAS has de-synced and you will have to do it again :(.

My guess is that when you went back in to edit it you weren't actually recording. To edit a video you've already made, make sure when you are about to start the playback and have selected the video that the box near the top that says "open read-only" is unchecked. Once you've done this, start your recording. make a savestate during it and load that savestate to start recording. it's weird ik...

I never actually went back and tried to re-record. I did all of my mini-TASes all at once, and none of them seemed to work...
But you just answered another question I had, so thanks :)

Sounds like a desynch. Those are for all intents and purposes random occurances that screw up a TAS. Read http://tasvideos.org/DesyncHelpTAS.html for more information.

Just one more question:
How would I get the savestate I downloaded to load on the emulator?

So I've decided to change the goal a bit.

We leave the "go to Haunted Wasteland" part out, mainly because the task is already long enough without it. Furthermore that part is definitely not beginner friendly. It would probably cause a lot of trouble to many people.

Ok, i was working on this task, and i decided to send the video to my friend so i can see what he thinks of it so far. He watched it and said "unless i am crazy, after you exit the fortress, you re-enter it." So i checked it out my movie and it played fine. he screen shared it on skype, and i saw link doing things that i did not do. So we checked out the inputs and they are identical to the frame, yet it was not displaying the same. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is?

Awww... the gate skip is the only thing I can do though...
Though I still don't know how I'll get to the heart piece. Ah well. That's half the fun :)

Title: Re: Ocarina of Time TAS Competition V3
Post by: Hornlitz on February 20, 2012, 08:21:02 PM
Well, this certainly isn't turning out too well right now...
Is the Megaflip through the wall blocking the heart piece even possible without Nayru's Love?

Alright, I may just give up for this one. I've tried Megaflipping through the barrier, that didn't work, I tried the Jumpslash technique, and that didn't work either. While I really enjoyed making the parts up to this point, I just can't get this one. So unless someone can help me with this, I'm out for this one. Sorry.

Since the deadline is the 26th, might not enter. Have to wait till the next task is announced. Until then I'll enjoy the runs published. The next task is a 100% go for me. Just watching the published competitions made me want to enter. :P

Edit: Ok, TASing comparison.
Snowboard Kids <--> OOT
Simple enough <--> I lost track of timing. o.o

I TRIED to see how to go about it, then seeing the TAS competition vids again, I think I'll need more practice than ever to even get one trick down. Not to mention, why the heavy slowdown when I load the state given? (Just deeply curious about it)

AWWWWWW YEEAAAAHHHH!!! I FINALLY got it! I'll send it in to Nahoc ASAP.

Before you record your movie/segment, you'd have to begin movie for the beginning of the trick or movie your doing. Then when your done, stop movie, and play it.

However, if it's just a video output thats not showing up when trying to view, it's common that it happened when your trying to record on a Vista or Win 7. If thats the case, simply right-click mupen and then properties. Then under the compatibility tab, check 'Disable desktop composition'. Nahoc helped me with this problem.

Hope this helped. Remember, the only files you need to submit is the .m64 and the save state file that comes along with it after the recording you wanted.

Thanks, that will probably help with AVI capturing. I already have recorded a few m64's before this, but the problem is that I don't know how to re-record, and I'm not sure if either of my normal rerecording or pause bug fix Mupen variants have a built-in rewind feature (if not, that will be annoying but I think it would work ok anyway).

Sadly it is a bit too late to start now, but if I somehow have enough free time for some weird reason, I'll try to join the next task.

Title: Re: Ocarina of Time TAS Competition V3

A re-record is just making a savestate and reloading it, mupen doesn't have a rewind feature unless you would call that one :P

Cool, I'll have to check it out now.

for some reason i still don't understand the process of re-recording... I get what it is, but I really need some sort of detailed step-by-step instructions as the description is still too vague, which is really sad since it sounds like it is really super simple. Everything else makes sense, or at least everything I can think of makes sense.

I should have stuck with my original strat, I thought that it would be possible to get to the end like Bloobieblah did. How are you doing the analog and z slides? I have tried several times to get them to work, but have had no success. I think that task 6 was a great task, it showed different routes to get to the same goal, and it was interesting to watch the compilation video :)

I finally will a decent amount of free time for the next week, so I'll likely join the next one. I really would like to know when the task will be posted. When I first saw your original OoT/MM TAS Competitions, I wished I could have participated. I was relieved when I saw a task 4, but that thread died fast. I realized you had started a V3 after the first new task finished, only it was too late to join the second (as I still needed to know how to rerecord, but I think I understand now).

I would make my own competition if this one were to die out (if only I could do so)

I demand another task!!! These are very fun to do :)
I agree, but I haven't done one yet, so I have yet to see how fun making one is.

Ok, so I've never TASd and I won't be anytime soon, but I would like to ask a few questions.

How long do these minute-long TASes take to make? You guys always say 'anyone who has time,' so it seems like it takes a few hours at least. Also, what is the difference between Project 64 and Mupen? It seems most of you prefer Mupen, so is it better for TAS or something?

Depends on how well you want to do it. One minute of a gameplay probably takes anywhere from 1-5 hours, depending on what is being done, how well you want to do it, how efficient you work, etc. If you're willing to drop the quality, and work fast, you could certainly do it in less.

Project64 is a much better emulator than mupen, but unfortunately you cannot tas with it.

Hello. I have never TAS'd Ocarina of Time (successfully) before, but I want to atleast try it. I have TAS'd Super Mario World, Mario 1 and Zelda:AoL before, so I understand the concept of TASing. The main problem I'm going to have is TASing in the 3rd dimension, I'm not used to it xD But I want to atleast try it. I'll be sure to join in on the next one.

School and the good weather made me totally forget the competition. I still haven't good any good ideas for a new task. Once I come up with something i'll start a new task as soon as possible.

If someone comes up with a nice goal he is welcome to share it. It should preferably be an OoT task and if possible Adult Link should be used. Even if your idea differs from this condition, please still post it ;)

I can see coming up with a task will become much harder, as most possibilities are now either:

a) already pretty much optimized
b) already done

c) have no room for creativity

Coming up with a new one may require being creative with the task rules.

Maybe one of these would be good (feel free to modify these):

Entering for the first time and as Adult Link, Enter the Sacred Forest Meadow and start the Minuet Cutscene. Nayru's Love, and Hover Boots are prohibited.

Entering Death Mountain Trail from Kakariko Village as Adult Link, grab the (so and so) Heart Piece(s) from Death Mountain Crater. Magic beans, Bolero of Fire, and Nayru's Love are prohibited.

Can we make it something "easy" for me? I have never TASed OOT before. and I want something that I could DO. Something that doesn't require a whole lot of...stuff like the Gerudo Valley heart piece one. Maybe something like...hm...

From to Death Mountain Trail entrance into Goron City (IE. not from the Lost Woods). Get the double magic meter upgrade. No Goron Tunic (though I suppose it won't REALLY be necessary...), no Hammer. Ideas? I've never TASed, so maybe there's some TAS only thing that makes this violently easy, but either way, try not to make it INSANELY hard for me. Also, where can I learn some basic OOT TASing information. Like exactly how frames do I need to start my roll for a megalip/superslide and so on. If im being an annoying noob you can just shoo me away xD

I can't help you with the superslide info (I can't do them no matter how much I try), but here's what I'm using for TASing Megaflips, Z-Slides and A-Slides off a bomb: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-2nRs2FZQE

For the Megaflip, backflip when the frame arrives where you have to decide what you're going to do next (unlike the slides, I suggest you keep your shield up until your out of the explosion's range).

How about getting a 100% Ice Cavern (three skulltulas, heart piece, and boots) without restrictions? Sounds like it would be a lot of fun IMO, but it might be a bit too heavy in terms of planning.

I am actually game for that, as long as we get more than the 2 weeks to do that one. 100% Ice Cavern, LETS GO!

I'd try any task, but I'd need an .st file as none of my saves are anywhere near prepared for any competitions... damn my time available for this is dwindling rather fast, so if I am to participate I need something to be decided on quick.  :(

Title: Re: Ocarina of Time TAS Competition V3

I probably wouldn't join if its 100% Ice Cavern...mainly because I only know where two of the skulltulas are off hand xD I think I know where the Heart Piece is...but again, im not entirely sure. I never liked the Ice CAvern, so I'd just go in, get the boots and get out. I MIGHT join though, don't expect anything awesome though lol

If I can download a ROM and figure out how Mupen works in time I'll probably join. It seems emulators will be all I have left since I've been forced to suspend my MM 100%. Like Kzar, you shouldn't expect much from me yet. I know almost no timesavers in OoT, and certainly none in the Ice Cavern. I'll have to practice finding the optimum frame for the backflip during wall hovering, look up TAS exclusive timesavers, and still find time to write my fanfic (and of course get through school -_-).

Doing these is the best way to learn the tricks. It is definitely helping me out, and its fun. If you need any help on how to work Mupen, or start recording or anything else, just message me and i will help you get started :)

I hope this didn't die yet again... Also I probably won't be able to do my best as my large period of free time has ended.  :'(

I have everything to do these, except the time (and a save state to use)

Doesn't the PAL version run at 5/6th the speed?

Yes it does. Exepted PAL60 which is 0.03 fps faster.

But you should play NTSC version. It's easier to find.

since when is NTSC easier to find? most of the sites i went to had the PAL version. It took me bout an hour to find an NTSC rom.

Hmm, I still didn't find a nice task. 100% Ice Cavern seems very complex and a bit long.

Just something dumb that out of a sudden came to my head while writing the first sentence of this post:
What about the clearing the fire maze room in Fire Temple backwards as Adult? Get from the door that leads to the Flare Dancer to the door from which you usually enter the room for the first time? If someone doesn't understand which room I am talking about, watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtvxQqf0qPA

It's the room in which I start. You'd have to find some way to get past the huge fire barrier and then you would also have to find a quick way to get to the door, which includes getting past all the mini barriers and getting up to the door.

Tell me what you think of it. Maybe it's total crap and just sounds nice in my head. Biggest advantage of it would be, that it is quite short, so a lot of people could take part without investing many hours of work.

Actually this sounds like it'd be fun to do. (Not to mention it'd be interesting seeing what people could come up with.)

If it ends up being the task then I'd definitely take part in this one. (And actually finish.)

I vote in favor of the backwards maze idea. Because it would be neat to see how people do it. But then again since i wouldnt be participating my vote probably shouldnt count.

I would ban hoverboots, so someone doesn't figure this out in reverse.

That would make it pretty boring.

I'm sure this thread is long since dead, but I'd give this a try.  However, I've never TASed before, so I'd need someone to teach me about TAS-only tricks and how to record my TAS.  Otherwise, the backwards fire maze sounds great!

Hey, if anyone could help me, I'm having trouble with Mupen.  When I try to use loz oot, Mupen crashes and I can't play it.  It worked fine until I downloaded the Tas input plugin 0.6(which came separate from the emulator itself) and then Mupen would crash immediately with no warning, and it says that it's the video plugin's fault.  If it helps, I'm on Vista.  Can someone tell me how to fix this?  And if this is in the wrong place,(which I'm sure it is) can someone put it where it belongs and will be answered?

Title: Re: Ocarina of Time TAS Competition V3
Post by: DekuScrub on May 13, 2012, 09:39:34 PM
Here are some things that I suggest will help make sure everything works, and also so that you can TAS properly:

First, check that you have Mupen64 Re-Recording v8, the newest version. You'll need it to be able to use frame advance and to re-record, a must for TASing.

Second, right-click on Mupen to access the drop down menu and select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab and mark "Disable Desktop Composition". If you ever want to record AVI movies with Mupen yourself, you need to do this or your video will just be audio. Not necessary fo this competition however as it requires an .m64, but a good thing to know.

Third, if you want to have the ability to access the pause screen in Ocarina of Time without the annoying delay, get the pause bug fix Mupen, and use that for OoT. (and disable desktop composition for that too)
No more run-ruining pause problems.

Finally, Check your video plugin. There might just be a very good reason why Mupen is telling you the Video Plugin isn't working. Find out which one is being used, by selecting "Settings" (NOT "Video Settings") in the Options tab.
If you are using the plugin "Glide64", make sure to change it to something else. Glide64 requires a Voodoo graphics card, which means you must use a Glide "Wrapper" to allow compatibility with your computer or the plugin will not work. Until you download a Glide wrapper, switch to something other than Glide.

Hope that helps.

Just one question.  Is the pause bug fix a separate Mupen, or is it an addition/plugin? As in, does  v8 come with the pause fix, or do I have to install it separately?  Or is it not compatible with v8?  I really want to start TASing, but I just need to get Mupen working right.

Edit:
Nvm, I spent time with my mom for mother's day, came back, and Mupen was working fine.  After a panic attack since I didn't know where frame advance was, I'm finally able to TAS.  What should I do just to get used to TASing?

Actually there's two solutions to the pause big, one is a seperate build of mupen itself but another one is by using Jabo 1.6 and turning on the framebuffer option. (icr exactly where it is but I wanna guess it's in advanced options.)

You should get the reset version from the notes from Swordless' Any% TAS and check "Copy Framebuffer to RDRAM" in the advanced settings of Jabo 1.6 to fix the pause lag.

Yo, thanks guys, that helped a ton.  Now I can get down to TASing.  Unfortunately, I have to play through the whole game to set up some savestates for practicing TAS-glitches/TASing dungeons/etc, but I'll get it done.  Soon enough this'll be second nature.

Title: Re: Ocarina of Time TAS Competition V3

Ok, Mupen freaking HATES me.  I just started it up, and the screen was completely black.  The game was running, I could hear the audio and could make inputs, but couldn't see the game.  I'm using Jabo's Direct3D 1.6 or whatever it's called.  I'm thinking about quitting TASing because Mupen hates me so much and it doesn't seem worth the effort.  Someone please help me?

Edit:
Now, it says:
"Direct3D failed to initialize
Error code:8876086AD3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE"
And then Mupen crashes.  Why must Mupen hate me?  I have a different problem with it every day and it pretty much seems to be screaming at me "STOP TRYING TO TAS!!!!"  It either does this or does the thing from my last post where I see a black screen, but the message is still clear that Mupen wants nothing to do with me.

What D U F I means by stop spamming is "don't keep adding new posts." There is a button next to each post you make that is labelled "modify" Use that and put EDIT: and insert your new message after that. Filling up the board with unnecessary posts is disapproved of here. I hope Mupen works out for you :)

Great idea for a TAS challenge: the bubble room in IJJB. Timer starts on the first frame that you have control of Link (after the door closes) and ends when you open the chest with the Compass.

This would make a really fun TAS because we would see a variety of different methods. There are three ways to kill bubbles: sword, rang and contact. Clever TASers would implement all three.

What do you guys think?

You should ban deku nuts if you do that.

afaik, deku nuts do nothing to bubbles. but yeah, everything other than sword and rang would be banned.

Those arent bubbles they are shaboms, (bubbles are flying skulls lol), and you should try walking in that room and throwing a deku nut. I think you will be quite pleased.

I had an idea for a task just recently, but it was an MM task :( Still can't think of anything for OoT other than the ones proposed.

Wait, maybe this: Starting at x entrance (not sure which one would be best) to Goron City, get to the fairy fountain at the top of the mountain. I don't know, just something I thought up.

If anyone wants to know what the MM task is, let me know.
