Title: Need help with more than a few things :(
Post by: Tenken on January 31, 2012, 12:29:49 PM
I have had a great interest in speed running this game for quite a while now, if nothing else just for the community aspect of it. I would love to get "good" enough to race or compete, even if it means I'll come in dead last every time. I just want to be able to finish basically, and interact with the community. Anyways I have had difficulty in more than a few places so far and I could really use some advice.

The main issue I'm having is the door of time skip, and I don't honestly think its something I should be having trouble with. A few months ago I tried learning this game, and did manage to get the forest escape and DoT skip down, I was able to succeed on both of them at least 5 times each. Far from consistent, but hey, I'll take what I can get. Anyways I come back tonight, months later, and try to get both of these down again. Get the forest escape without too much trouble, head over to the temple of time and try to get the DoT skip again, and I've been trying for (embarrassingly enough) almost four hours. I am 100% sure I have succeeded at making it through the door in the past as I have mentioned above but now I am having an awfully hard time getting to even clip through the door at all. The biggest problem I have, and what is probably most frustrating for me of all, is that I just have no idea what I'm doing wrong for the most part. I have a 100% understanding of how the trick is supposed to work, I know how to set up the angle, and I know the input to clip through the wall. The problem is obviously in my execution, but I just need to know what it is I'm doing wrong. For whatever reason, whenever I'm holding the control stick down and to the LEFT, link tends to roll to the RIGHT way too often and I'm not really sure why. Sometimes I get the action correct, and I'll do the roll to the left and then the sidehop, but just won't clip through the wall, and that's fine, at least I'm not going the completely opposite direction.

I guess the biggest deterrent in all of this for me is that I have a friend who speed runs and glitches this game a ton, and from what he tells me the DoT skip is pretty much one of the easiest sequence breaks in the whole game. The deterrent being if I can't perform this simple trick, how am I supposed to perform some of the more demanding and challenging tricks the game requires to speed run? another possible problem is my friend says I use an HDTV when I'm playing that has approximately a 0.5s input lag on the controller and that might have something to do with it, as this is the only TV I own, is that small input lag really significant enough to make speed running the game near impossible or is my buddy just trolling me? I want to make it clear that I do not expect instant success with something like this, I'm more than well aware that to learn a game of this magnitude takes time, what I'm most frustrated with at this point is that I just don't understand what I'm not doing correctly, and that after investing several hours into the game tonight I have made (seemingly) no noticeable progress.

Like I said in my opening paragraph, I would love to start speed running this game and to get involved with the awesome community, but after failing so miserably at what is supposedly one of the game's easily tricks, I am really getting frustrated and discouraged. Can anyone give me some advice on this situation that might help me overcome this rough patch? I appreciate any help I can get.

Hello Tenken, welcome to the community!  :)

First I would recommend watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVWIhdTdnMY

I go over a lot of situations that you may be having a problem with, and you can see how I press the joystick and the buttons to do it. I hope that is helpful in some way for realizing the error. Your friend is right in a sense and wrong in a sense; once you've gotten the DoT skip down it really is one of the easier tricks in the game to continue to have a high success rate at. But until you do, it can be one of the most frustrating (when it first was found those of us who were around also spend hours and hours trying to get it).

Your friend is also right for the most part about an HDTV. A lot of gamers who play classic or older games will use an older TV (CRT) so we don't have to deal with the input lag. I myself would never be able to play with even a few frames of input lag after playing without it for years and years. To me 0.5 seconds would be huge. However, if it's the only TV you've played with, it's completely possible for you to be comfortable with the lag. Your visual cues for doing some tricks will just be slightly different.

If you don't already have component cables for your wii picking them up will do wonders for any lag on your television

that being said its not going to stop you from being able to do the trick, everything is about what you're used to even if having no lag is preferable.

dot skip is really rough to learn though, its far from being one of the easiest tricks in the game. once you understand it its somewhat easy to get consistent at but its a relatively complex series of movements in a short space of time so don't worry about taking some time to learn it. most things in this game can seem overwhelming until they click with you so just stick with it and you'll get there

I was having problems with rolling to the right instead of the left, but it was because of me holding my controller on a diagonal. Try looking at how you are moving the joystick when you normally do it. The video Runnerguy posted helped me alot to get the DoT skip pretty consistant. Just try to get the pause buffer method down if you want to do a race and just be able to finish. I play on an HDTV, it is possible to do consistantly.

Thanks everyone for the responses, and that video helps a great deal, I think I can see what I had been doing wrong. I will be trying to pull this off again today so hopefully it goes well and if it does I will have you all to thank.

Absolutely what you said helped gamestabled. I was actually able to nail the skip 5 times today each within I'd say 10 attempts or so of arriving at the temple. Not the most consistent but for someone just starting out I'm very happy with that. Definitely a huge improvement for me, I'd like to thank you all again for assisting me with this issue, it has definitely helped me a great deal in learning this trick, and hopefully the others will come to me a bit easier (although I assume that won't be the case :P)
