Title: OoT Puzzle Race #7
Post by: sockfolder on August 22, 2011, 07:20:03 AM
I made a new puzzle that I want to get a big race for. Currently I think it would be best to have it sometime next weekend. Please post if you are interested and which day (Saturday or Sunday) would be best for you.

Also, I need to make a few comments about the puzzle. First, this will be a no RBA puzzle. Alot of people have expressed interest in this so if this describes you, you should definitely join up. Second, there have been some rumors about the high difficulty of my puzzles. Do not worry. I toned down my puzzle substantially, so if anything, I would say it is on the easy side. If you have a reasonable knowledge of OoT and are willing to look up tricks, you should be able to complete it.

Time to get hyped  :)

Most people seemed to want it to be on Saturday. Therefore, I am scheduling the puzzle race to be on Saturday at 3pm EST. If you have any problems with this time, say so quickly. Everyone who can should join this race, even if you are new to the scene. It will be a blast.

Sorryyyyyyyy guys!!!

I though this race is gonna be next weekend. How stupid of me. Next time when we make topic about puzzle race then type day when it's gonna happen. Like 27.8 or something!!! I misunderstood because of this. And of course I can't join on this weekend. This is basically my luck and sorry again :(

EDIT:
If it is on sunday at this weekend and at 3PM EST I can race then. Sorry for all this trouble! If you guys choose to do race on saturnday. I'm fine with that too.

Since some people have reported that they will not be able to race this Saturday, I am moving the puzzle race back to Sunday at 3 EST. Sorry Mundungu. Hopefully everyone will be happy with this =).

Since this has been over for a while, it is about time I post the puzzle, solutions, and the order people finished in.

Puzzle Race 7

Goal: Obtain the Fire Medallion
Restrictions: You may not obtain/use a deku shield, deku stick, goron tunic, bombchus, bottles, heart pieces/containers, or adult trade items. In addition, you may not pick up bomb flowers as adult.

Solutions

There are basically four subpuzzles to the overall puzzle, each with multiple solutions of varying difficulty.

1. Obtain the Ocarina without a shield.
The easiest way to do this is to come back through the tunnel from Hyrule Field to Kokiri Forest. If you triple slash into the loading zone, you will appear on the inside of the Kokiri guard and can simply turn back around to get the ocarina. Alternatively, you could escape with the walking while talking or the WESS methods.

2. Obtain bombs.
First, you need to get the Goron bracelet, destroy the first wall inside DC, and then go adult. The best way to get the bombs from here is to get the bow as adult, which allows after to shoot the bomb flowers near the stairs in rapid succession to drop them. After the stairs are dropped, it is easy to get the bombs. The other, far more difficult method is to hit the switch inside DC as adult, and then poe hover onto the seam to shadow temple. Then you get the hover boots so you can travel back in time. With the switch hit, you can drop the stairs as child and get to the room where you normally need a slingshot. Here, you have to do a sidehop/jumpslash trick to go around all the fires and get to the bombs.

3. Get past block room in the fire temple.
The easy way to do this is to get Farore's Wind. Then go to the block room and set a warp point there. After save warping, warp there from the entrance with a full fire timer. You can push the block off and then ride it out of the room. If you are too slow to escape, the dungeon will still save the state of the block. Thus, you can simple run back to that room from the entrance and cast Farore's Wind again. Then SW and warp back, and the block will still be pushed. There is alot of time to get on the block and leave the room now. The far more/almost impossible way is to SS with hover boots on past the first room and clear the next room very quickly, using Din's Fire to delay the timer. ZFG somehow managed this.

4. Beat Volvagia.
This evidently ended up harder than I intended. The best strategy requires getting the Giant's Knife and Din's Fire (and the bow of course). Then you hammer+gk js Volvagia once, cast Din's Fire to stop the timer while Volvagia is preparing to fly, and then shoot Volvagia twice. At this point, you typically cast Din's Fire twice more and Volvagia will be about to come up. A hammer and gk js will finish Volvagia off. Alternatively, you can try 'casting' Nayru's Love while jumping to slow the timer, or really casting Nayru's Love to slightly delay the timer and then removing it for example by sitting on Volvagia's navi text for ~30 sec. Cosmo tried the backflipping method, but couldn't quite succeed.

Also, there was an unintended solution of using elemental protection to skip both fire temple subpuzzles. This was only possible in 1.0 so it gave those players an advantage. I will note using this method by a (v1.0) in the results.

Results:
RaceBot went down during the race so I do not know the exact times and results. I believe these are correct, but feel free to pm me if I made a mistake.

2. Mp16 (1.0)
3. Kazooie (1.0)
