I had a crazy idea, but I'm not sure it would be feasible.
The idea is to do the biggest race on oot on the 3DS version, on the first file of every participant.
People should stream/record the opening of their untouched box of oot 3ds (still under plastic), put it in their 3ds and start their first game with a random name choosen on irc before the race (as usual).
The goal would be of course to finish the game in one sitting.

I've been debating organizing something like this

The issue is some people will get the game much sooner than others (a difference of up to 48 hours) and I don't think the people getting it earlier will want to wait for the people getting it later.

I don't really see a way around this issue

and i know at least for me, who will be getting it at least 13 hours after those on the east coast at midnight, and i dont wanna join a race where some people will finish before i get the chance to open the case.

I'm gonna have oot 3ds the 17, but I'd be able to wait if a lot of guys from ZSR accepted to race.

Anyway, why not simply record the first game (with the box opening) and then compare times?

I like this idea a lot, and I think it's doable for people that happen to get the game at the same time. Otherwise yeah, I'm not going to let it sit sealed on my desk for half a day when there are glitches to be tested and fun to be had :P.

And about the camcorder recording thing, I only have a 2GB SD card that holds about 2 hours max. I don't see any of us beating the game in 2 hours first playthrough. Not to mention I (and others probably) will want to play in 3D the first playthrough which doesn't display well on camera.

All you have to do is pause before recording runs out and then dump the footage onto your computer and then record from the same SD card, or use another SD card when recording runs out, but you'll need at least 3 to do that. I expect most people to be around the 5:40-6:30 if this race goes ahead. Just don't put the 3D on when recording.

i think a better idea might be to do the race on 5pm est/pst the day the game comes out in us (or even the next day). this way everyone who is getting it day 1 has a chance to test gltiches/play the game, and then everyone will be at least somewhat prepared for the race.

of course if maxx and cosmo (and whoever gets it at midnight) wanna race ASAP they can, but we could set the large race for later in the day/week

maybe there could be a USA division and Europe division to have 2 races but that sounds like much more trouble and complications.

theres still the fact that not everyone can get the game at midnight.

Since I'm french, I'm not sure I could race at the hours you want to... (Or I'll get to my classroom looking pretty tired, that's an option).
Anyway, I'll record my first run with opening of the box and post my time here.

I think all racers should do this: record the first game, then we'll post our time here at a certain hour, and link to the proof video (megaupload, mediafire, or whatever you want...)
So even those who have limited recording time like aleckermit will be able to pause, and start a new video.

Just have everyone start streaming as they get it, and have the viewers comment on the completion time. Lets people start when they get it, but allows people who get it later to compete on equal footing because everyone's playing it through for their first time (just at different start times). Also will make the "race" last longer for more exposure or something. Unless you really need to have everyone playing at the same time...

something's that going to suck is that it wouldn't be possible to play with 3D on and film at the same time. it would be almost impossible to see what's going on.

Personnaly, I don't think it really matters to see what's going on. Even if it is recorded with a shitty webcam, and a low quality, it is just a proof video, not meant for entertaining. People just need to guess what is going on the screen. So you could play it 3D.

I think the best thing to do is to simply record the first game, and wait until the chosen date to post your time with a video that will proove it. People could even pause to eat, change SD card, or any other obligations.
It is simplier for a lot of people who can't stream, and could open the competition to many other people who may join ZSR (post the race idea in other forums).

Any cheat suspicion could lead to a disqualification, so people will make legit videos.

but i think that ruins the whole idea of racing that cosmo has worked so hard to create over at speedrunslive.com.

Yeah, but the delay between releases and the different time locations makes it hard to plan.
But I'm pretty sure it could lead new people to join ZSR.
If you, speedrunners, agree, then we'll have to write rules, and I'll translate them to post on many french zelda forums.

I don't want to race if we're not doing it at the same time.

What about a race later in the week? Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday night?

Not that I'm getting the game, but are people practicing beforehand or must everyone prove they're removing the game from the cellophane?

it looks like the race depends on the europeans taking one for the team and not playing the game until it is out in america.
