Title: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 - Sunday, Sept 2 at 1 p.m. EDT Post by: Enterim on August 25, 2012, 05:57:20 PM Hello, I'm introducing a Sightseeing race. In this race, you'll be given at start a 4x4 grid of 16 screenshotted locations from OoT and it is your job to recreate those same viewpoints. Child/adult status doesn't matter unless it's radically different, such as Zora's Domain or the Market. This is logistically kind of silly without a pictobox so streaming or taking pictures will be required as proof. I think a reasonable goal will be to see 12 of those 16 sights?
Execution of bizarre and unfamiliar tricks takes a backseat in this race. Sightseeing emphasizes an acute knowledge of the game plus the ability to route on the fly. It shouldn't be a particularly difficult goal (you could do it natural route if you wanted) but speed tricks will be helpful (mostly movement ones). One important thing worth noting is height. Your exact angle isn't that crucial, but for your sight to count you must be at the same height as the screenshot. I have all the screenshots taken and assembled so this could be raced any time. How about next week? And if anyone doesn't feel like racing but would be around and like to help out, I would be very grateful if someone could help me manage proof and prevent spoilers. Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Pheenoh on August 25, 2012, 09:58:28 PM I think this is a really cool idea.
Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Runnerguy2489 on August 26, 2012, 04:12:59 AM I like this idea, count me in if I'm around.
EDIT: I'll be busy next Saturday for Labor day weekend..Sunday or Monday I could do this if you were thinking on a weekend. Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Kimimaru on August 26, 2012, 06:29:30 PM Sounds fun to me. There aren't any restrictions at all? How lenient are you going to be with the height? I can do this on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of next week (technically this week).
Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Enterim on August 27, 2012, 11:24:14 PM Right now I'm leaning towards this upcoming Sunday, Sep 2 around 1 p.m. EDT. How's that?
And with regards to the height question: if it's on a slope or hill, then it's not that important, but being on the correct surface is required. If one of the pictures were of the Colossus in front of the Spirit Temple and it was taken from where the heart piece is, then you couldn't stand underneath it on the sand and have that count. As long as you're on the correct plane, basically, then your position is fine. Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Norkix on August 28, 2012, 01:41:46 AM I kind of skipped a paragraph after reading "Execution of bizarre and unfamiliar tricks," knowing I wouldn't be able to understand with my small OoT knowledge. But now I actually read everything, this is an awesome idea. Unfortunately, I cannot participate, having neither routing-on-the-fly skills, nor indeed a capture card to take screenshots with.
Also, this post was only necessary because I felt like an ass for not paying attention. Sorry. Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Kimimaru on August 28, 2012, 04:11:09 AM September 1st is good for me.
Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: T00lri0t on August 28, 2012, 06:52:22 AM Would it be possible to record or put together a video of these races? This sounds like a cool idea but for being one with no way to compete myself I would still love to see how this is accomplished

http://speedrunslive.com/ This is the website that hosts races, although the races really happen in the IRC. Its actually a very easy and casual process, lotsa fun too :) Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Runnerguy2489 on August 28, 2012, 10:09:40 PM Sunday September 1 works for me currently.
Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Wodahs-Reklaw on August 29, 2012, 06:39:28 AM I can be down for Sunday also, just let me know when it should start. Also do we need to send all the screenshots when we .done? Or could just a stream count?
Edit: I just re-read it and saw that streaming is fine. Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 Post by: Enterim on August 30, 2012, 03:24:32 PM Turns out I don't know how to count. Sunday is September 2nd, and that's when this race is, to clarify.

Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 - Sunday, Sept 2 at 1 p.m. EDT Post by: Kimimaru on September 03, 2012, 05:27:53 PM Oh wow, I realized I did the one in Death Mountain Crater wrong; the smaller version posted on SRL made it look like the view was from the bottom part you warp to with the Bolero of Fire.
Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 - Sunday, Sept 2 at 1 p.m. EDT Post by: Enterim on September 03, 2012, 07:26:19 PM This is the same image I linked to in the race...
.dq, banned forever This turned out reasonably well. In the future I would probably work on balancing a little more (making the easy-to-reach screenshots in obscure locations and the easy-to-recognize in time-consuming places) whereas these shots were mostly taken artfully rather than strategically, which is rather dumb for a competition. Runnerguy suggested that in incarnations we could make it so rupee, c-button, heart, item counts in the screenshots have to match for it to count, which would add a huge layer of strategy. Thoughts on that? Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 - Sunday, Sept 2 at 1 p.m. EDT Post by: Kimimaru on September 03, 2012, 10:23:38 PM Yeah, it was the same image, but the image was resized when you posted it and I saw it a bit differently. I got in last anyway (aside from the forfeits) so it's not a big deal.
That suggestion could work out. I thought the best part of this race was I can do it with any route and with mostly any items I wanted to. I don't like the rupee count idea because then it could extend to getting the Adult/Giant's Wallet, which would require Gold Skulltulas and those can get messy. If the items you choose for the C-buttons are already pretty much required (Bombs, Chus), then I don't see a problem with it. I think Heart count would be great too, so you'd have to go find some Heart Pieces for the view to be legit. It would increase the length of the race, but to compensate you can maybe have fewer pictures? Title: Re: OoT Sightseeing Race #1 - Sunday, Sept 2 at 1 p.m. EDT Post by: Enterim on September 04, 2012, 12:46:03 AM No, I mean the image I linked in the goal and in this thread are the exact same, resolution and everything. They're both the same imgur link.
Not that it matters, anyway. I don't care. Getting the Adult Wallet is the least of worries as that's only 10 GS. The hard thing would be having to get/spend the right amount of rupees. |
