Post by: HiipFire on May 09, 2012, 11:46:22 PM
Hey, could anyone introduce into running this game?
Like help me instead of just dumping all the information on me.
Thanks in advance.

Hey there HiipFire. I'm a fellow rookie (been here since mid-February), but I do have quite a lot of experience with MM. Here's what I did when I first started speedrunning.

First off, choose the version you feel most comfortable with. For me, this was N64, but it may be different for you. I will say that N64 has the advantage of easy HESS (Hyper Extended Super Slide), but it's totally up to you.
Second, practice practice practice for hours before you even start an attempt. Look over the tricks in the run and practice them on a completed file over and over until you get at least a 1 in 3 consistency with them. If you dont know how to do a trick, most of them have a page on ZSR, others can be found on YouTube. Practice is key.
Third, watch previous runs of the route you're going to attempt. This will show you timesavers that may not be told in the route. After learning the timesavers, practice them as well. Timesavers are generally easier to master than tricks, but a few are just as difficult.
When you start the run, it is important to remain calm. Don't worry about the timer, just play through the route. If you're worrying about the timer, you'll start trying to do things too quickly. Believe me, I speak from experience. Speedrunning takes patience and control. If you're getting stressed, take a break and listen to some music or watch something funny to help you calm down. Stress will make you sloppy (again, I speak from experience).

Welcome to ZSR, man. I look forward to seeing your work :)

Keeta, what does that even mean? If I don't understand, HiipFire won't either.

In all seriousness, this is an awesome post. Pretty much everything SXL covered are important concepts to remember when speed running any game.

I can't seem to be able to pull of ISG, is there something different you have to do on a PAL N64?

Title: Re: Noob trying to get into MM running

ISG is all about timing. I'm not sure if there's anything special on PAL, (myself playing on NTSC-U) but I find that I can always get it if I press A while Link is bringing the sword back in from the crouch stab. I find that most people trying to do ISG for the first time tend to immediately press A or press A too late.

Hope I helped ^_^

Just a recommendation: you should try to get your hands on an NTSC N64 and copy of the game. Speedrunning on PAL is going to be very difficult. As long as the console/game have been used before, you should be able to get them at a reasonable price.

It's fine man, I do that sometimes too. It was just a suggestion anyways. You don't need to, but a lot of the PAL players here have gotten NTSC consoles just for speedrunning. It's still possible to speedrun on PAL.

Good luck with ISG! :)

If you have a wii, it would be better and cheaper for you to just hack your wii and play ntsc mm on it. Playing on the N64 version will always put you at a disadvantage because of the lag and slower loading times.

When I've tried to "speed run" this game I've practised with old routes. Pyh's 3h37m run has a not to hard route which I've followed some times before using other routes. Some timesavers I'm currently struggling with is getting through the ice en route to mountain village and Ikana seam walking.
Do you people here know where I can watch old speedruns? I remember watching this old WR that had some incoherent route for bottles and Zora eggs, it's interesting to see how much been dicovered in this game through the years.

I have PAL N64 and my controllers are rather weary, so I seriously consider do get myself NTSC virtual console.

Playing on the N64 version will always put you at a disadvantage because of the lag and slower loading times.

It will, however, give you more control over your character (assuming your stick isn't horribly broken). :P

Can't I just buy a N64 Passport instead of buying a new N64?

Edit: What's the difference between PAL and NTSC for MM?

Title: Re: Noob trying to get into MM running

PAL runs at 5/6 the speed of NTSC and has shorter rolls, meaning you have to time all roll-based tricks differently (and you have less frames to do them).

I finally got ISG down, I basically just mash B and then mash A and I always get it.
Currently trying to get the hover timing down.

Rookie here aswell, i have just joined this forum,
and i have been following this community for a couble of years now,
i know just about any of the tricks played of in OOT,
MM and WW. I have practised alot, but i have some qustions:

1. When i hover near a wall with chus, they ALWAYS fail for me,
they just glide off below me and work as normal,
this is preventing me from skipping mirror shield for stonetower,
and doing alot of other stuff,
This forces me to turn midair if i want to execute a height increansing hover.

2. I have a N64 aswell, i have that Gold Cartridge, special edition one, i don't know if it is PAL or NTSC. It is English text and such.
Can somebody tell me what that version is and if it is suitable for running.

3. I have got a fucking retarded N64 controller, it is really old, and the analog stick is just fucked, any idea where to get a new for a  cheap price, or just how to fix my controller?

4. Now that i have both N64 and the VC version, which one should i play runs on, is there any huge differences?

Well i have a wii and it is hacked. I have got Wii64 on it,
but it seems the game has a few graphic problems,
LoT doesn't work proberbly, although i have managed to climb to the Goron shrine thing anyways, the sun is all fucked up when you look at it.
There is a bit of lag in the sound as well...
I don't know if i am using a wrong plugin, settings or even a wrong version of the game.
Please give me some advice.

1. you must pull and shield the bombchu very quickly

2. To find out your version: http://zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/generalknowledge/version-differences

3. ebay will have them really cheap, I've seen 10$

4. I would say play on VC rather than N64, less lag for both OoT and MM. It is up to preference though (controllers, trick differences/diffuculty levels)

You should just download .WAD files to your Wii, they are cracked games that come from the Wii store (it will appear is though you bought them, it will show up as it's own channel, and is the official version) rather than the sub-par emulator Wii64 is. Wii64 is also illegal in runs

And welcome to the forum Lordpilot!

I say thankyou.
I helped me quite alot.
I have one more question, i have heard that you can record your runs with a DVD screenrecorder.
Where can i get this, and what is the approximate price for it :) is it limited to only few tvs, or does it work with old chubby televisions?

You can get it on ebay, amazon.com, or just a store like Best Buy (if you're in the US). The price ranges depending on what quality you get, ranging from 5-100$. It can work mostly on any TV, but if you have an older one this will help: http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/DVDRecordersFAQ?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&langId=-1&catGroupId=24987#dvdcon2

Progress report yayyyyy

So, I haven't really gotten the time to play alot of MM recently, but I have been able to get bomb(chu) hovering pretty consistent, I can do the run decently fast up to the Zora fly to the fountain, which is where I stopped.

Still working on getting the SS timing down.
Still playing on PAL(I'm broke ;(, If someone can sell me a cart for around €20 I'd love you forever)

EDIT: Should I run RTA since it's faster?

I'm also learning MM (well I decided I want to try again) and have most of the tricks down except HESS and Megaflip and was wondering if anybody could make a cutscene skip guide like the one OOT has because I've been having a couple of problems figuring out what I'm supposed to do in order to skip them. I've seen most of the cutscene skips on youtube / in the run but an explanation page on ZSR would be very helpful for us newer people :D

So incase anyone's wondering, I'm trying to get SS down, but I can't seem to do it probably just because my timing is wrong.
How do you do flying zora, because I can't seem to get it consistent.
If someone could maybe help me on Skype that'd be nice aswell, my skype's HiipFire.

Still trying to get a NTSC cart/console.

I finally found out what I was doing wrong with SS, finally starting to get it consistent.

Might play on emulator until I get a NTSC cart(so I can stream).

Flying Zora : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z1tsx7nxAs

Super Slide is really all just about timing and practice. I haven't really played the game enough to be able to tell you when you should be hitting which button but with practice it gets a lot easier. One thing I highly recommend to do is use an emulator, make a save state somewhere in the main area. Give yourself unlimited items (cheat code in Project 64) and then just practice until you get it. It probably took me at least 15-30 minutes to get my first one. Then even longer before I could get another and now I can do them fairly consistently. One important thing is to make sure you are doing them on level ground (keeps timing easier) and not in the snow. I found the snow really messed up my timing. Also if you try to do really small flips (just barely outside the grab range) it makes it a bit easier to get the timing right and consistent. Good luck ^_^

*About the emulator, only try it if you happen to have a controller on hand. Playing on a keyboard is not as much fun.
