Title: Your thoughts on an OoT randomiser?
Post by: DeathBasket on July 07, 2013, 02:33:47 PM
Lately I've been working on a randomiser for Majora's Mask to switch around items and masks you get from chests, NPCs, etc. (see this (http://www.twitch.tv/goronguy/c/2527836)) and I'm considering doing something similar for Ocarina of Time once I'm done with it. However, I need some input if I do go ahead and do it.

  • What version should it be based on? 1.0 or 1.2?
  • Any items excluded from randomisation? I had a request for explosives to be a fixed item in MM.
  • Are there any items that could become unreachable if placed in a certain location?

As with the MM randomiser, I'd have the item list generated based on your filename so that if it were used for races, everybody could get the same items.

While explosives are also pretty important in OoT, I'd say leave them randomized.

Do the shops become randomzied? That'd be interesting + cool. My only fear is getting stuck in Kokiri Forest (you need either a deku stick, a kokiri sword, or a deku nut to escape the forest).

Some thoughts... feel free to correct me.

ISG = Sword item + shield + explosives.
Megaflip = Shield + explosives.

As a child...
DT needs only the Sword with Mido Skip, but I don't know how difficult that is, otherwise you also need Deku Shield. Either way, the dungeon item will require a shield.
DC requires Zelda's Letter + Bracelet to enter/complete, or Explosives. Dungeon Item can be reached with sword + bracelet or Explosives + Shield for Megaflip.
Zora's Fountain -> Domain requires Lullaby (which requires a bottle or Ocarina), or explosives. Unless there's a clip I'm forgetting, you also need diving scale -> Ruto's Letter or explosives + shield to bypass King Zora. Jabu can be entered early, but you cannot get past the first room without explosives or sling. Dungeon Item can be reached without anything special.

As an adult...
Forest requires Hookshot+ or Explosives to enter, assuming no wrong warp. Otherwise no special equipment is needed to reach the Dungeon Item.
Fire requires Hookshot+ or Explosives to get to the bridge. Dungeon might require SoT (Ocarina), but I forget. Dungeon Item requires Hookshot, Explosives, or Megaton Hammer. Fire can be beaten without Tunic, but no bottle for fairy might get tough, and there's the possibility that you can't build up enough hearts.
Ice Cavern requires only a bottle to complete. Same requirements needed to go from Zora's Fountain -> Domain, but King Zora can be skipped via defrost glitch iirc.
Water Dungeon Item requires Hookshot+ or ISG, with either a Water Diving Trick (Spell Diving) or Iron Boots.

Too tired to complete, but I can say that...

Trade items probably shouldn't be randomized. Outside ZL, Ruto Letter, Child Trade Items are useless. Trade Items with timers exhibit odd behavior (timeout causes the last entrance to load instead of going back the the proper npc) when duped over (and probably if you obtain another trade item during a sequence. Both types of items can revert back to an earlier form as well, and if obtained from a chess they could be lost forever.

imho version 1.1 would probably be the best for randomizer (Eyeball Frog early, can get Lon Lon stick multiple times, don't need to have beaten Forest to use minuet for Bongo ww, etc.; it's kinda the best of both worlds)

Getting stuck in Kokiri Forest is a major concern, and as you mentioned in irc it might be nice to have some way to block Ganondoor as child or something :P

Regarding mzx's points:

Deku Tree can't be completed without shield because of 2-3-1 (or a TAS only 2-3-1 skip which also requires a shield :P)
Zora's Domain can be entered as child without ZL or explosives using the cucco in Zora's River
You can get past the first room in Jabu Jabu with only a sword and shield
Also unless I'm forgetting something, without certain other items you would need the bracelet in order to get the Bow in Forest
Shadow requires ZL unless you wrong warp or you're insane

I would suggest just refining MM's, I don't personally see how it's fun for this game. Looking at the list of concerns here, it's less of a randomiser if all of that needs to be sorted for consistency without requiring more and more explosives to bypass some. Getting adult items as a child would be a bit of a downer too, assuming no DoT skip. :\

I do have to say it would be pretty amusing if some file name have the Lens of Truth to be the reward in the Treasure Chest game. Even more amusing is if the Bomb Bag is the reward for catching a Hylian Loach. Have fun finding out what your reward is for that!

What of the Bombchu Bowling Alley? That mini-game randomizes between five different items, and the odds for there to be a good item with the randomsier would be, well, higher? And we wouldn't want that to be the case for a race in which case we would have to find a different name to use. And then play that mini-game a number of times to know what they are with a new name and repeat. lol. Also, you will need a Bomb Bag to unlock that mini-game.

I would maybe try an OoT randomizer.
I would prefer it be made on v1.1 though.

v1.0 has too many obscure bugs (like if a bomb explodes in your hands as you're walking, the next bomb will drop automatically).
v1.2 has too many bugs fixed (Hold R comes to mind).
