When does the timing end? is there any restrictions on items? What is the due date for this?

Indeed. I'd like some more info this. This might be a good beginner TAS for me. Are you going to provide a saveatate as well, or will we need to beat a portion of the game ourselves ul to that point. (I'd MUCH prefer the save state)

Post by: Amphorce on March 28, 2012, 12:10:05 PM
If a savestate isnt provided, I plan on using a savestate from Mr.Grunz's TAS competition. Are we going for the heart piece in the race, or are we going for the hookshot?

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS
Post by: Kzar5678 on March 28, 2012, 03:39:57 PM
Yeah, because if the hookshot is already gotten, we can use it at the end to hookshot to the torch abd cut off a few seconds

Two questions: are all emulators free and can I download one to a USB drive

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS
Post by: Amphorce on March 29, 2012, 01:11:01 AM
The emulator you need to do a n64 TAS can be found at tasvideos.org . It is called Mupen64-rr. The software is free and it can be downloaded to a USB drive.

What about Project64? I know that isn't TAS, but I'm looking for something free. I may get mupen if I ever feel like I may want to TAS, but for now just a free emulator will do.

All emulators are free man, Mupen64 works the best for both Tool Assisted Speedrunning and just playing for fun/making a video (it has built in video recorder). If you paid for an emulator or saw a price on one it is a scam

Warburner I did not know you ran TASs =)

Mupen is terrible. PJ64 is way better if you're not tasing.

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS
Post by: Amphorce on March 29, 2012, 12:38:04 PM
ahou: Really? I have always liked Mupen better than PJ64, even before I started to do TASs.

Tom Nook: I just got started into doing TAS's from Mr.Grunz's TAS competitions. I was doing super mario bros. the lost levels and mega man 2 TASs before hand, but never was super serious about them. It was just for doing glitches i couldnt do in real time, and making myself seem like a pro to my little brother (i explained to him afterwards that i didnt do it in real time)

poptart1234: Alright, just one last question, is the last frame that is counted the first frame dampe text pops up after the race? or does it end the first frame when you get the hookshot or heart piece?

alright, i plan on doing this. I just wanted to know because if it was the first textbox on recieving the item, then Heart Piece would be faster.

April 5th is cutting it a little close, dontcha think? I'd suggest you extend the due date either to April 8th or April 14th.

Yes, an extension would be nice, especially since you just put up the savestate. Give people that havent been active on the forums and run across this some time to get it done.

Aww... :( I think you should enter, I don't think anyone that is entering this is actually good at doing TAS's (please correct me if i am wrong) and It would be cool to compare your usage of explosives to other peoples (That is the only thing I can see being different in this task to be honest)

Not sure if I'll join this task or not, though I got a few of my own, and Grunz is hardly ever on to make any, or reply to messages I send him, lmao. So complete Dampe Race as a child? I think I'll pass on this one(working on some challenges for OoT and a route for another tas). Also, might be easier to make it simpler to read for others. Kinda like this(used your challenge as an example):

Challenge: Complete Dampe race as a child

Start/Finish: The frame you arrive in the grave to speak to Dampe to the first frame you begin to talk with Dampe after the race is over

Special Rules: No Nayru's Love/Hookshot. Max of 3 explosives to use.

Due date: April 9th

Snapshot: *insert a snapshot here if needed*

Savestate: *insert savestate link here*

Not trying to be mean or anything. Just decided to look through this topic, and just happened to see a bit of confusion in the beginning replies and thought I'd make a quick post. The Dampe race looks like it'd be interesting to watch some newcomers in tasing. Hope this can all turn out well for recording!

The save state is adult, you have to glitch inside to access dampe's grave as a child!

What, we can't use the US rom? Cuz that's the one that I have...
Wait... What? Where did you see that we have to use a rom that isn't US?

The save state provided is for PAL roms, and the US rom is NTSC. (The file said it was made on the European anyways)
I also checked in mupen, and it gave the error 'Savestate Wrong Region'. Even if you were to use the state on the US rom (you can in PJ64 from what i've seen), the result would be the emulator equivalent of CC.

You can use the US rom, but if you want to use the provided save state, you will need to use a European rom.

Wait...so......what? The challenge is to do the race as a child, but the savestate is for adult? Seriously, poptart, you should think these sort of things more thoroughly before posting. Im not trying to mean, but it confuses the hell out of everyone. Just sayin'

Post by: Kzar5678 on April 05, 2012, 12:03:43 PM
OOhhhh. Ok. That makes things a bit easier. Just to clarify:

No Nayru's Love, No Hook/Longshot, 3 explosives only. Time starts the frame Dampe speaks at the start, and ends the frame he speaks at the end?

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS

yes ;)

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS
Post by: Amphorce on April 05, 2012, 07:19:12 PM
so since timing doesnt start til dampe speaks first, does that mean we can use a bomb before then and it won't count towards our 3 explosive limit?

DUFI: Don't even bother. There is a reason that everyone who has been here for over a month or two has completely ignored this topic. Okay I lied, I count at least 4 reasons.

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS
Post by: DekuScrub on April 08, 2012, 04:03:26 PM
I think I can see why you say that explosives are unnecessary after the race starts: the time taken from using the bomb is greater than the benefit.  Doing so restricts movement (no sidehops/rolling) and time to grab/roll/whatever else you need for the glitch. Ground jump needs you to roll, grab, and block damage (not good), mega flip requires a roll, ISG is completely useless here (also requires a stop stab & grab) and things like superslide, ess, z-slide and a-slide do not make the race faster OR if you do get ahead, dampe will become really slow, and you will lose more time than you gain.

Also, I joined in December, but I had been looking at the site before then, so I've known about this site for at a minimum of 4 months. The reason I joined is because I wanted to participate in a competition. Well, I didn't get to do so, and it looks like I still won't get to, considering how things are now.

Title: Re: poptart1234's oot task complitions TAS
Post by: Kimimaru on April 08, 2012, 06:33:50 PM
I think the problem with using explosives is you'll be too far ahead of Dampe and have to wait longer for him to open the doors. This happened to me once when I did a ground jump to get ahead, and I eventually had to wait a while for him to catch up.

what about getting the kokiri sword? timeing starts from control and end the first frame you open the box. you would not need a save state sence itoms are banned. let me know if it is dumb or cool  ;)

I think that an extension to the 10th (Tuesday) would be good, but any amount that gives at least 1 more day would probably help anyone who is behind.

Thinking ahead, it might help if you plan out the rules somewhat and make a savestate before you start a task, so you can put them up in the announcement and help make things simpler. Don't worry about that though until you decide to start a new one as this one is already past that point.

I probably won't finish / probably won't do well, but I hope the results are good!

MM:Get all Title deed heart pieces in any order.
Start from clock town owl warp statue or the door to mask sales man, after buying everything needed. No song of soaring.
If this is too long get two TD heart pieces.

MM: Beat the Bomber's test in Clock Town on the Final Day.
Start from the area with the mask salesman, exiting into South Clock Town.
Bunny Hood and Goron Mask are banned. Shooting any projectiles (such as arrows, but not bombs) is banned too.
Timing will start as soon as the Dawn of the Final Day cutscene ends, and ends when the final bomber's dialog box appears.

OoT:start at start of SFM, enter forest temple as child link.  Time starts when you get control of link at the start of SFM, and ends when you lose control of link as he goes into the forest temple.  Minuet of forest banned.

Ok, I guess I'll join.  You can't do the jumpslash clip? :(  Ok, I'll still rock this TAS competition.  Sorry I couldn't join the last one.  And we're joining from the Gerudo Valley entrance, right?

Wait, how are you ever supposed to get in the training grounds as a kid? I know you can get to the fortress, but you can't get into the training grounds right? Is there a OoB glitch in that area or something like that?

I believe you can get either the Gerudo Membership card (i think) or the original unload-the-entrance way. (TylerArtrip actualy did this method in Mr. Grunz' last TAS competition.)

Is the savestate US or J?  I only have the J ROM and I'm not getting the US, too much work.  Besides, JP is faster.

Edit:  shoot, it's US, so I can't use that savestate.  I'll have someone else make me my savestate.

I'm good.  I got a savestate last night, I'm most of the way through my entry.  The sidehop-jumpslash clip is banned you said, right?

Also, do you need my entry encoded before I send it to you since I use the JP version and you use US?

Going to send it now, took ~2185 frames, counting from the given savestate until the first frame you can see the Gerudo training grounds text.
I think I did OK :)

EDIT: I couldn't wait getting it online, so I uploaded my own version too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=983EruKh7KU
I think I might upload my previous entry later

Where do I see the youtube compilation?  And also, please make it neat and presentable unlike the last one.  Please show the person's name and time before their section of the video, and in the description, put people's times and rerecord accounts.  I'll edit this post if I think of anything else you should do.  Maybe put in background music?

I completely agree. The last video was... how do you say it without insulting anyone / anything... not very professional. Try doing some of this stuff next time please.

Is this already closed? I'm working on mine (hadn't started yet) right as I am typing this.
I might be done in an hour or two if I can get link to regain his sense of direction.

Edit: I finished, and due to link having no sense of direction, I did poorly at around frame 550 (link would not turn properly) of my .m64 and did really really badly (for a TAS) from frame 1700 until the end of the recording. (this time link had absolutely no sense of direction and forced me to do the unload trick after the seamwalk non-tas) :(
I'll send it anyway. I likely will lose though as mine is longer than a minute.

EDIT 2: Also if it has added background music my only request is no lyrics, cause I don't care for lyrics very much.

Agreed about the no lyrics thing.  And when WILL it be done?  I want to see it.  Also, does anyone else have trouble with their encodes?  Whenever I encode my TASes, they're a black screen with the sounds happening, Idk why it does this.  I try to use Xvid, if it helps.

I use AVISynth, and virtualdubmod to encode my TASses, but I've only encoded 2d TASses so far. You can also just look at TASvideos.org Somewhere there is an article about encoding TASses. Hope this helps!

It happens with all my codecs, just I usually use xvid.  Idk why, I don't think it really matters.  I hope I'll figure it out eventually.

The same thing used to happen to me, but I fixed it. If your on Windows Vista, right-click Mupen, click Properties, select the "Compatibility" tab, and check "Disable Desktop Composition" and that should hopefully help. It was somebody on this forum who told me this but can't remember who/where.
