Title: A Sockfolder Puzzle
Post by: sockfolder on March 25, 2012, 10:16:28 PM
I have a new puzzle for everyone. It seems pretty cool, and hopefully a couple parts will blow your mind. It is fairly long (I could see some people taking 6 hours), so I want to make sure to schedule at a time when a lot of people can join. Currently I'm thinking of scheduling it for this coming weekend or the one after that. If you are busy during either weekend, please post when you are free.

A little bit of information about the puzzle:
1) It doesn't revolve around rba, but rba is allowed.
2) FWWW is not understood well enough to be in a puzzle, so it will be banned in this one.
3) There are no especially difficult parts for new people, except maybe one. Most of the stuff that is hard (to figure out) will be hard for everyone. I would say that if you are newer, you should practice megaflips. That is probably the hardest mechanical part of the puzzle.

My primary goal is for everyone to have fun, so I will probably give a few tips to minimize the probability of you getting stuck. In conclusion, everyone should join!

I forgot to mention this to you, but I'm gonna be gone all Easter weekend, so this weekend or the one after that. Obviously I can't participate, but I missed your last puzzle as well because I was away. I really don't wanna miss this one. :(

Also: HYPE!!!! Sock's puzzles are the best. :)

I think this might be fun. It'll definatley get back into speedrunning. But Megaflips...I kinda suck at though...Especially without Nayru's Love... I'll have to practice then and try to perfect it. Im just glad this is an OOT puzzle and not MM, I did megaflips for 10 minutes straight and only got 9 successful. I find OOT Megaflips easier than MM Megaflips. Although MM has RecoilFlips and better Hovering, but that's besides the point xD Just let us know when (hopefully on a Friday or Saturday) and I'll try to join in

Also, what's FWWW? /me feels like a noob xD

Title: Re: A Sockfolder Puzzle

Humorously, I always totally forget Nayru's Love can make megaflips easy. Also, FWWW is Farore's Wind wrong warp, the trick that is used to warp to the end credits in any%. It is such a complicated trick that can go to so many places, and can also crash depending on the last cutscene you watched, where you've been, and who knows what. Basically, the understanding of FWWW is not in a place where it can be used in a puzzle, so I wanted to reassure people they didn't have to know it.

Based the feedback I've gotten so far, I'm currently scheduling this for Sat 3/31 at 3pm EST.
Get hyped!

One question: Are we absolutely required to stream? I know it's generally required for emulators, but my streams look good only when I'm playing on fullscreen, and since you said you're giving out tips I might need to exit fullscreen mode and check them every now and then.

You should definitely stream if you can. What are you using to stream? OoT is pretty low resolution so it shouldn't look bad in just a window.

(Admittedly, alot of people don't like to stream puzzle races to prevent cheating. However, I would still heavily encourage streaming.)

Gah, sorry. I didn't see that there >.< but alright. It is iffy if i can do it then, since I am in a Pokemon online tournament this weekend. I will join if i can

I want to stream it, but I MUCH prefer the precision an N64 controller gives rather than directional buttons xD I'll try setting up a USB controller to see if I can get the precision I require, but if not, you won't be getting any streaming from me. I can still record it via my Phone (quality wouldn't be that great) but I'd upload it to Youtube and it obviously wouldnt be live. )
Ah so that's FWWW. Ive seen it done, Ive never actually tried it though. When I saw that video I just about crapped myself. I hope someone (cough Mr. Grunz cough) makes an any% OOT TAS utilizing that glitch and see how fast we can do it. (Id say like what...30 minutes? lol) If that!

Before i dedicate myself to this blindly, what IS a puzzle race? Can you give me some example of past goals so I can get an idea for what's to come? (I did some IRC impromptu races back before I went inactive, is it like those?)

It's pretty much impromptu races, the difference being that these generally require more intimate knowledge of the game to complete.

Was pracicing megaflops yesterday. I had 40 bombs and reset twice for a total of 120 attempts. I got maybe 7 flips...:S I recorded it so you can help me if you see me doing something wrong.
Anyways, about te puzzle, as long as it doesn't require DoT skip orWater Temple w/o Iron Boots, Shadow Early or Cucco Jump, I'm game.

Those are some of the most well-documented tricks... I'd be more worried about the difficult, obscure tricks that puzzle races typically require.

Is there a date set for this race? Or is it still set to next weekend or the week after?
Also, I'm from Europe and I don't know where everyone's from, so will this race be Europe-friendly?
I will deeply consider participating:)

Assuming sockfolder hasn't decided to change anything, the date and time for the puzzle race is still March 31st @ 3 p.m. EST.

How are we going to document this etc.? Is there going to be an IRC channel we're going to join so we all start at the same time? If so, which channel? (I will be joining)

This Puzzle race will be raced in speedrunslive.com

Server: irc.speeddemosarchive.com
Channel: #speedrunslive

Choose nickname, join the channel and ask more help in channel etc.

Hype!

Awesome puzzle! Unfortunately, one thing that you had to do later was really pushing it for me, and I haven't eaten all day, so I had to quit.

EDIT: Also, why did many people say you needed the Longshot? If I had continued my route I would have skipped it entirely.

Title: Re: A Sockfolder Puzzle
Post by: Kzar5678 on April 01, 2012, 01:20:33 PM
Its a great puzzle, it had me stumped for a while. I was given some hints and decided to do RBA to learn the Nocturne of Shadow, but for some damn reason, Link WOULD NOT steal the freakin' rod. I tried that divey thing and mash B, but he NEVER. THREW. THE ROD. So, I gave up... depressing, I know. Shortly after I quit I thought to myself, "Dammit, why'd I quit? I told myself at the beginning that I was only going to quit if I was the last one who hasn't finished and still had no idea how to do this..." But yeah, I hope next time I can actually pull of the glitch required...=/

Anyways, is there going to be a leaderboard? I only stuck around long enough for Cosmo to win and the seamwalk to be banned xD

Title: Re: A Sockfolder Puzzle
Post by: Kimimaru on April 01, 2012, 07:33:10 PM
Yeah, I used RBA to get the Song of Time and all that other good stuff, but I forgot to play it in the Temple of Time before RBAing the medallions, and I forgot that RBAing the Forest Medallion wasn't enough to make Sheik leave the pedestal so I had to go through a lot more.

Personally, I think the goal would've been better without the frame perfect Death Wrong Warp; aside from that (and the seamwalk), I thought it was flawless and clever. Good one, sockfolder!

Question: HOW THE HELL DOES DOUBLE DEFENSE TAKE 6 HOURS?! You don't even need adult, all you need is bombs to megaflip to it. That doesn't use ISG or keys. Someone plz explain.

1. You're thinking of double magic.
2. Bombs/chus are banned.
3. There actually was a faster way to do this with a seam walk, but it wasn't part of the puzzle. If it's banned, this puzzle would take 3 hours minimum.

Puzzle was really good

It's not negative vibes toward the puzzle, it's negative vibes toward ourselves (atleast in my case). I'm pretty dissappoinnted in myself for quitting :( I think part of it was that I don't understand RBA in the alighteat, so even if I was successful in stealing the rod, I probably still wouldn't. Have ever finished it :S

It seems my puzzles always cause a bit of controversy. In the future, such puzzle races will probably just not be recorded in the first place so people can enjoy the various parts of the puzzle a bit more.

Anyway, the approximate results are:

For non-seamwalkers:
1. cfox77 - 5:30 ?
2. cafde - 5:58:55
3. Cosmo - 6:10:44
4. Christianf23 - 11:00:12
5. Jarvitz - 12:08:30*

* completed over multiple days

Of course, seamwalking skipped the whole puzzle so it was alot faster for those who used it:
1. ZFG (1:23:26)
2. Runnerguy2489 (2:12:23)

I divided the puzzle sorta into 3 parts: The Trial of Courage, the Trial of Wisdom, and the Trial of Power.

The Trial of Courage involved getting the gold skulltula in shadow temple. The standard solution was to do the temple backwards as adult to unlock a door behind a bombable wall for young Link. This required long shot to reach an unused hookshot target in the large room. Samura1man managed to pull off a crazy boomerang throw to get the gs in the boat room, which allows skipping water temple in this puzzle.

The Trial of Wisdom involved getting the gold skulltula in water temple. Most people went for the execution based gs, a very precise rang throw in the moving platform room before the longshot.  However, the other solution involved a very cool trick in my opinion. You set fw inside the central room, raise the water to the top, then warp to the fw point. This lets you get into the central column with the water raised and you can reach the gs there.

The Trial of Power is getting the gs in fire and forest temple. This was the most technical part of the puzzle, which unfortunately turned alot of people off =(. You had to megaflip from the top of dmc and reach the large boulder/mountain. From there, you can megaflip over the boulders to reach fire temple. Then you use the death wrong warp to get to forest temple as child without isg.

Some other interesting facts: It was possible to avoid rba (except for the trivial rba to ba the hammer), and Christianf23 actually did it. It required getting Nocturne legit. Everyone got the goron bracelet (which is faster and easier), but it was possible to get silver gauntlets. There were alot of methods used for chus. You could: Use ZL in BotW and get them there; Get bombs first; Get wallet and buy them in the desert; Get 2 keys in gtg and get them there.

I hope people enjoyed the puzzle despite the controversy.

Thats completely not how though it wad meant to be done. How do you death warp into Forest Temple by the way? I know how to get into the other dungeons as Child, but the only I can think of to get into FT is though hovering (Which btw, is REALLY hard for me to do as a child).

I realize this post is old, but I have a question about the puzzle.  Why exactly couldn't you just RBA the nocturne, get the hover boots, get the gold skulltula in the boat room, and then crouch stab recoil to double defense?  Why do you need to go to the forest, fire, and water temples anyways?  And sorry for bumping this old thread.

You have to go back in time, meaning you have to beat forest temple, meaning you then have to go to forest temple as child link. Without isg you then need to wrong warp to forest as child from fire. Water temple was for going through shadow in reverse with longshot, but the boat skulltula was not thought to be possible with those restrictions (but iirc someone did get it?).

Oh yeah...This is why I don't do puzzles or bingos.  There's so much going on, I always forget key rules or something important so I can pass.  Thanks for clearing that up for me.
