Title: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Cosmo on September 16, 2009, 03:26:09 AM
Well now that we got this big website which is somewhat empty in regards to actual speedruns, I think it's time we planned some fun "Extra category" stuff like IL runs. The MM board is already planning this out and I think we should too.

Ocarina of Time - Individual Levels (Un)official Leaderboard (https://docs.google.com/a/bc.edu/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Agd2Z9LUz1qvdGRqM21VSVNSRHd6dm1yem83UkZabFE&usp=drive_web#gid=0)

Go there for the most recent rules and runs.

Videos now stream! Thanks slowi! :)

As I said in the other topic, we should track rooms that are timed (Light Trial room, certain rooms in GTG, horse racing, etc)

My category ideas:

General Rule:
~ Cannot use dungeon items until after opening chest with that item (no BAing).
~ Unless otherwhise stated, cannot complete child dungeons as adult or vice versa.

1) Any%
- Only restriction is no RBA/BA before or after (since rbaing bks is just lame)
- Can use adult in child dungeons and vice versa, assuming the cutscene at the end does not freeze (probably only useful in Deku Tree though)
2) 100%
- All Gold Skulltulas
3) 101%
- All rooms, GSes, chests
4) Low%
- Can only use Low% MST items (I'd say low%, but good luck beating Volvagia or Gohma or Barinade...Low% MST is basically same item set as low% + boss weaknesses - a few bottles and scale; Fire Arrows, Goron Tunic, and Gold Gauntlets can be included in the definition or not)

Dungeons:
Deku Tree
Dodongo's Cavern
Jabu Jabu's Belly
Forest Temple
Fire Temple
Ice Cavern (time ends at Serenade cutscene, 100% involves all skulltulas, 101% does not exist)
Water Temple
Bottom of the Well (time ends at lens of truth, 100% involves all small keys and skulltulas, 101% does not exist)
Shadow Temple
Gerudo Training Ground (time ends at ice arrows, may ban child for any% or not; 100% involves getting all small keys, 101% does not exist)
Spirit Temple Child (must be done as child; timing ends after getting Silver Gauntlets)
Spirit Temple Adult (must be done as adult; timing ends after beating Twinrova)

I think doing dungeons as the wrong link might be interesting but i don't know.

It's hard to come up with a "standardized" ruleset for this stuff.

I might do some kinda bad runs for the full completion category just to get them out there, which will hopefully raise interest.

The reason the full completion category is a good idea (despite what some might think) is that OoT is a broken ass game especially with hovering and clipping, etc. If these easy to verify (pause after HC) rules are in place it shows off the whole dungeon which usually never happens, even if all the skulltulas are gotten. It also creates more variables (what's the quickest way to get link in all these rooms)

Post by: Runnerguy2489 on September 16, 2009, 03:44:04 PM
I love this idea, especially the all chests, rooms, skulltulas category. It would really show some areas of the game that are never seen.

I also like the idea of adult temples as a child. Even if the game freezes upon entering the blue circle it really doesn't matter, that would be when timing ends anyway.

I think a middle category would be good too; something like boss key must be collected or no OoB tricks. It may also want to exclude items you normally wouldn't have at that point in the game. Deku Tree with Din's Fire would be kind of lame. Although this would also eliminate all the cool hoverboot tricks from Forest/Fire/Water, so I'm not sure on that one.

in-between would probably be a temple-by-temple trick list that is banned.
here's a head scratcher:

get the boss key in forest temple, but do the boss key skip anyways.

legal? not?

these are the things we must consider

That wouldn't really make any sense to get it and not use it. <_< Idk, that's just my opinion. Maybe it could be considered in the 100% tables.

http://zeldaspeedruns.com/site/index.php?link=oot/speedruns/individuallevel

updated rules:

general rules:
- dungeons must not have been entered yet. the map subscreen, upon entering the dungeon must be empty. this includes 0 smallkeys.
- timing starts upon gaining control of link in the 1st room of the dungeon
- timing ends upon touching the blue warp post-boss
- no crooked cart
- avoid emulator runs if possible please
- low-visual quality runs are OK! camcorders are fine.

any%:
- no other restrictions. this is the major glitch / clip / bosskey skip / rba run and will usually be very short.

100%:
- all chests
- all rooms blue
- all gold skulltulas in dungeon
- gets the heart container
- after getting HC, pause and show all floors of the map subscreen as proof. (this will not count against your time)
- enter the blue warp.

These are the main two categories as of now! One that completely breaks the dungeon and the other that shows off the entire dungeon! Maybe in the future we will have an inbetween but for now these are good.

still working on formatting that page

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)

ringrush brought up an additional point: all runs must be a single segment, nobody wants to see segmented dungeon runs.

We're gonna need one of those things for the MM board, it's way better than the old fashioned way (although someone else would have to edit in the times, I suck at computer shit)

The page is formatted and my run is up. Officially taking run submissions now!

Also the first post is updated with the updated rules

Kazooie I saw your questions in the IRC but I was gone

Yes you are allowed to collect as many items as you want outside the dungeon as long as you haven't entered it yet :)

You can also do dungeons as the "wrong" link, ie, Deku Tree as Adult Link if you wanted to.

There's no category for "natural route" right now, maybe that will change later (like deku tree with just the start of game items)

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Kazooie on September 17, 2009, 08:47:57 PM
Okay and thanks! That kind of rule would be good for some dungeons maybe or maybe not. I don't know for sure :)

I might try a Ganon's Castle Speedrun. What would be the rules on that?

Stop Timing after final slash on Ganon is what I assume

I'm not sure, but I think we should try fill up the actual dungeon charts before we do side stuff like that.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)

hey Jer :)

at 1:35 i think you could store the deku jumpslash so when you hit gohma w/ deku nuts you can immediately do fast crouchstabs

if you're quick enough after the megasidehop you can skip the 2nd dins

a good timesaver is using jumpslash recoil while falling past the 2nd web to bounce off the wall and ended up all the way to the land without having to swim anywhere

give me details on the console/emu you used to run it with

Title: Sorry friends
Post by: Cosmo on September 22, 2009, 03:19:54 AM
Emulator runs are now banned. The old emulator runs have been removed from the leaderboard.
I apologize because I honestly believe all the times submitted so far were real, but the inconsistencies bothered me a lot.

  • People had cheated items, resulting in impossible inventories.
  • Emulators allow people to retry segments instantly at the press of a button.
  • They can also use savestates with pretty easy editing to make it look seamless.
  • They can use rerecording and slowdown to "lightly TAS" it so it looks plausible but was achieved dishonestly
  • They don't emulate the game the way its supposed to look. There are bugs and graphical inconsistencies.

We have to nip this in the bud before somebody submits their epic 100% Fire Temple emulated run and we just can't tell anymore what has been cheated and what has not.

Sincerest apologies to Kazooie, ice, and unreal.

PS this is definitely not to protect my craptastic Water Temple any%, I'm pretty sure kazooie's gonna destroy my run on his gamecube soon anyway :P

When I woke up today and come to see this site I was shocked lol. Almost all my time what I used was pointless but I got more skills. That is good point in it. You did right thing Cosmo! It's good thing to make emu runs banned because of those things what you sayed earlier in your above post. I'm not angry, not at all and sorry cosmo if I did my runs on emulator. I'll fix that right away! Today I'll do some IL runs ;)

PS. I deleted my runs from youtube too.

Yeah, i understand why it had to be done though it still sucks to see your first run get taken down.
its no prob. ill see if i can find some time to redo it but it probably wont be for a little while

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on September 22, 2009, 03:38:18 PM
I was about to bring this point up yesterday but didn't want to sound like I was nagging. It's definitely the right thing to do.

If you look at Kazooie's water temple run, he starts just outside the water temple with the fish in a bottle on B, and has a savestate there I'm sure (as anyone would do so they could attempt it over and over). Now the thing is: If you tried to save inside the water temple like this on a console so you could do attempts over and over, you'd lose your bottle on B! Sure, you could start at the ToT with deku stick on B in any console version I believe, and get the fish there, warp, and then start, but it's a huge waste of time for every single attempt. So it gives quite an edge to the emulator. Additionally, because of the savestates, the emu runs could set up their pause screen when they need to switch items to be on the right screen; a save inside a temple means when you first pause on a console it brings up the map. It's a little thing I know, but it's still an edge.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Kazooie on September 22, 2009, 08:43:59 PM
I agreed with runnerguy. It's right thing to do and delete those emu runs and that way it makes cheating harded. When I played on console today I was thinking about this. It's much much better do run on console!! And here is my new Forest Temple speedrun on console. It's two second slower than last one on emu but I'll do better later.

Have fun! ;D

Since Grunz totally ruined future MM IL's with his "Skip every damn boss key" ways, what if there was an intermediate run where both the boss key must be obtained, and the boss door must be opened? Sort of a NMS IL?

Now that I think about it, we might have to throw in the dungeon item as well, considering that all child dungeons don't have keys.

Actually they are down to 1/30th of a second difference, if that, lol

I don't mind ties too much with 1 second precision (it makes beating a time more of an accomplishment, especially if somebody had high milliseconds), but maybe the majority of you feel otherwise? Let's discuss it

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on September 24, 2009, 05:45:25 PM
Hmm you're right, I didn't realize just how close they really are.

I think if it was 3:01.9 and another was 3:01.2 I would say there is a 1st place and a 2nd place, even something like .45 and .55 I'd want to award a winner.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)

Alright guys, question time (about Spirit Temple):

What do you guys feel about the Mirror shield and the Silver gauntlets chests? It is possible to get both without ever entering the dungeon. Is this allowed? is it not?

What do you feel about the alternate entrances into the dungeon? Are we required to start in the first room?

Similarly, how do you feel about the Requiem of Spirit?
You could walk in and walk out without doing anything and it would trigger the cutscene and the song, which would save time if you wanted to leave the dungeon from the first room, and use the magic bean to do the superslide seamwalk.

These all change the runs for this dungeon quite a lot so we should nail the rules out before we start accepting runs here.

Nice run ice.  Just 2 suggestions

1.  In the water room you don't need a ground jump to reach the ledge, AL can reach it on his own just fine
2.  Should have used FW after entering the first eyeswitch room in the basement.  Costs a pause but saves going backwards

In other deku tree news, 1:33 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0mcIhBNJ9s), and I take away jianos 1st spot on deku :P

How do I submit an IL run? I just finished a Deku Tree 100%.

EDIT: damn, it's already been done?! i was hoping to be the first one.

I just watched icebreaker's run, and we did a couple things different, like I used FW a few times, and he hookshotted to the map chest to get there faster. btw my time is 6:31 I believe.

ZFG making a new category for 1 dungeon isn't a good idea with a small community. We don't even have all the runs filled and you want more categories... if we keep allowing that kind of stuff it just fragments the whole competition and makes it more of a joke. I realize that fire temple no-BA is "more entertaining" than any% with the hammer on B, but it goes against the whole idea of any% (beat it as fast as possible, using maximum exploits and glitches). The category would be basically made for 1 dungeon. If you want to submit, please do, but don't be surprised with somebody beats it by 7 minutes

BTW, properly timing your jabu run right now

Don't forget to pause at the end either and show the map screen.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Cosmo on October 12, 2009, 04:57:00 PM
I would say that is not strictly necessary, although it would be a very good practice to make things easier for the verifier

You aren't penalized for showing the map at the end, and it shows the full completion

It's ok that you didn't, but next time you should... It would suck to have like a fire temple 100% without showing the map at the end, trying to think of all the stuff they may have missed

I did a Deku Tree any% run a couple days ago. I wasn't gonna submit it but what the hell. It's a 1:37, so its 2nd place not 1st. Couldn't quite make 1:33.

Download (http://www.filefront.com/14736689/Deku%20any%25.wmv)

(Also you're welcome ZFG since my run will boost you up to 1st place)

Spirit 10:17 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8de0qbb6cfo).  Got hit by twinrova though :(.  Could have been sub 10 if my controller didn't screw up for that split second.

The page is now 50x more awesome thanks to Slowi's new code to make the videos stream :)

Now it is easy to watch everybody's runs! I hope this increases competition.

I am currently in the process of preparing a file for a 100% forest temple (in ocarina of time of course) and I am planning out several routes based on the boundary conditions of the rules.

I was wondering if it is okay to get the light arrows early and use them in the forest temple before I get the actual quiver in the dungeon.  It would save a lot of time in the dungeon, but it would take me more time to get the shadow and spirit medallions early and then I would probably have to get the longshot early from the water temple as an adult.  Otherwise, I am just going to try and get the longshot by entering the water temple as a child and go with an alternative method for getting everything in the forest temple.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: ZFG on November 04, 2009, 11:47:50 PM
That would be perfectly fine.  As long as you don't touch forest temple at all before starting, you can do just about anything.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Cosmo on November 04, 2009, 11:48:07 PM
Yes that would be allowed.

edit: damn zfg beat me

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Maxx on November 05, 2009, 01:57:49 AM
Note that while you can get Light Arrows, your arrow amount will go straight to 0 after one shot unless you have a quiver.  You can use RBA to add a quiver to your inventory, though, which is also allowed.

how many frames are in a second?

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Cosmo on November 16, 2009, 05:24:38 AM
how many frames are in a second?

OoT and MM run at 20 visual frames per second, but Mupen takes 60 input frames (it would be cool if a TASer pressed B 30 times in a second and see if it counted as tapping or holding, I'm interested in the result -- does the game actually take that many inputs or is mupen just based off of it?)

So TASers have been called 1 visual frame "3 frames" which makes sense in that way.

If you see somebody perform an action 1 visual frame later than they should have, its 1/20th of a second loss.

Pokey brought up a good question.

Is FW allowed to be placed in the first room of the Deku Tree before you start the run, so you can warp in and then start?

It's a good question and I really don't know what to think about it. I actually think it might end up being slower than normally walking in cause if i remember correctly you have to fall but still have control of link during that period of time. But it would make restarts a lot easier instead of having to glitch back into the Deku tree.

thoughts everybody?

No problem, Cosmo.  The file is on Megavideo now so it can be watched directly online.  You can obtain the html code to embed it as a flash video.  Let me know if this will help you out in any way.

Also, I made a video the other day proving that the fish trick to move during the first poe cut scene works on console versions.  Unfortunately once I killed a poe, the elevator moves back into place.  This probably occurs because the game assumes that if you have 1-3 poe torches lit, then the elevator must be dormant.  We would have to do the typical boss key skip after getting everything else to skip the other uneeded poes.

Here is the link for the poe cut scene video: http://www.megavideo.com/?d=6JE5E4Z4

Unofficially, I have been victorious since 12/31/2009 for 100% Forest Temple.  I never officially got the chance to celebrate as ZFG gave me a good run for my money.

Also, I am working on a water temple 100% run.  Is the small key rba trick allowed for this run?

Yes it is JRD, but it must be done during the run, you can't rba the keys then start the IL.

Lol, that would require some intense video gaming to complete a water temple 100% in under 11 minutes.  I ended up finding a avi to mp4 converter, so here is my 100% water temple run as an mp4:

Now all we need is a 100% spirit temple run and then all the categories for ocarina of time will have at least one submission.

Don't use an MP4 converter; the output file won't work on the flash player on ZSR. I know because it happened before. Render the video in MP4 instead.

Should the JP version be allowed? Note I will not be doing any text time conversions, so we either accept the JP runs or we don't.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Elminster45 on February 11, 2010, 08:56:21 PM
If not, then I think we shouldn't allow JP. We already convert PAL times to NTSC so as not to deter European players from playing, but if somebody placed 1st in an IL using JP, getting a time impossible to beat on another language version, that just wouldn't sit well with me.

I would be all for it if somebody could actually time the differences for each scene of text and then just add time to a JP IL accordingly.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)

wouldn't that defeat the whole point of using the jp version?

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: JRD05 on February 12, 2010, 12:14:47 AM
I think converting the time of a Japanese individual level would not make sense because the other versions would have to be converted as well.  The North American gamecube version has a longer pause screen loading time than the n64 but those individual dungeon times run on the gamecube version are left intact.  To be fair and consistent, it seems like all times would have to be converted to one specific standard (n64, gamecube, vc, etc.).

I think the Japanese version of the game should be allowed, if the owner claims to have no other versions of the game.  Though it would be bad if someone copied the exact same route as a first place holder but received a far better time due to text differences.

Here's my IGC Any% IL ending at Dorf (where it should end IMO). Pulled off a 4:19, 1 second faster than in my 13:10 run. So which-ever way this IGC IL ending decision goes, I have an any% submission for it haha. But with this Dorf ending file you don't have to encode it  and make it into a mp4 because it's under 11 minutes and is already an mp4 *wink wink nudge nudge*

I was actually gonna suggest that you keep your IL with Ganon and then just cut the video after Ganondorf dies. But you ended up getting it 1 second faster with just Ganondorf. :o

I finally got a great any% IGC IL this evening. A 4:17.28!

mp4: http://www.mediafire.com/?tqdlik4hnvm

Also, Zero has managed a good 100% IGC IL (Dorf ending).

Hopefully Cosmo will put our runs on the IL page and correct the rules for the IGC IL? The votes are perfectly split on the pole, but just about every veteran person on ZSR agrees with Ganondorf being the ending since he is the boss of the castle, and doing the separate escape sequence and Ganon adds more than 9 minutes to the final time. The main focus of IGC should be the trials and defeating the dungeon's boss.

Got a time of 17:06.04 (3 seconds faster than last run). Very hard IL to finish, did 100's of attempts with only like 5 finishes.

Don't get too excited, I actually had lots of trouble with this IL. And... I have never ESS'd out of a normal SS. I also cut-out the quickflips at the very beginning because they were ruining quite a few of my attempts (focused mainly on the Trials themselves). But at the very least I hope that I helped find some route and strat breakthroughs.

Sounds cool. If fact it would be awesome to just have a child/adult category for every dungeon (except for JJB, Ganon's Castle and the other dungeons that can't be beat as a child/adult of course).

I want to bring up a couple of issues considering some people still like to do ILs here and there. The rules for ILs were made well before any wrong warp and whatnot so I'd like to propose a slight change to the rules.

1. The rule for starting in the first room leads to silly situations like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxu2peQ3Nh0) where the first room is only entered to start the timing and the dungeon is left completely to warp to the boss. Should the start timing be changed to entering the dungeon at any point? I and a few others think so as it would open up some different routing options such as starting at a different entrance of spirit.

2. If the rule is not changed should we allow runs like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQz7WwLRF2E) ? Although I am going through the main entrance, technically room 8 is loaded.

3. Assuming even that is not allowed, should a wrong coordinate warp to a different spot of the first room be allowed? This could be done for a dodongo's cavern IL where you can warp up to the second floor right away, or even just used to skip the intro cs of the first room.

TL;DR should timing be allowed to be started by warping into a dungeon.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Amateseru on February 10, 2015, 10:19:41 AM
I posted a comment on your vid but I think it's actually better to post here, My opinion is that 3 things should be done for IL:

-Ban things like Wrong warp, seriously what the point ? We can't even see the dungeon anymore.
-Also ban BA/RBA, getting the hammer on B and the boss key before you ever enter in the fire temple will completely destroy the gameplay.
-Add somewhere in the leaderbords the IL times because I don't even now where I can find them, if you put them in the leaderbord it's very likely it will revive the ILs (maybe also add a child/adult section and a any%/100% (where you will have to get map/compass/bk/item of the dungeon for exemple) section ?)

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: GlitchesAndStuff on February 10, 2015, 10:42:10 AM
We'll have some kind of leaderboards but it won't be kept with the main ZSR leaderboards, I don't think it's nearly popular enough for that yet. Probably just a google doc somewhere though. If ILs do come back, I'd personally agree with banning concepts 1. and 2., as cool as they are I don't think it's much of a challenge to do ILs like that and removes good runs with dungeon content from the any% ILs. I'm a little unsure on .3 but I'm thinking ban it too?

I think a good rule would be that you have to start from entering the dungeon from the correct entrance with regular coordinates + entry speed.

As for RBA, we used to allow it but it did make the dungeon any% runs a bit shit when they just went straight to the boss door and beat the dungeon.. I mean, I know deku, forest and water temples are still pretty much skip to the end but w/e. I think it's good to have some more interesting any% runs but idk whether we should just arbitrarily ban tricks like RBA.

100% ILs are great though, I do love the 100% IL definition

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)

First off IL WRs are still tracked here (Rules are on the rules sheet): https://docs.google.com/a/bc.edu/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Agd2Z9LUz1qvdGRqM21VSVNSRHd6dm1yem83UkZabFE&usp=drive_web#gid=0

Cafde: In my opinion we should follow the rules used in the past in order to maintain continuity with previous records. The rule regarding Spirit clearly shows that you should enter the dungeon from the main entrance, and then do whatever is fastest to beat the dungeon even if that means leaving it immediately. I think the way Sniping's Shadow IL is timed is correct, and I also think timing for your DC run is correct because you used the main entrance as the load zone you warped with.

Amateseru: The point of IL's is to go fast, not show off the dungeon lol. Also obtaining real items you get in the dungeon before you start the IL is already banned, which is why you can, for example, BA Hammer for Fire but not RBA Water boss key (until you enter the dungeon and start the run anyway).

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: cafde on February 11, 2015, 02:38:53 AM
If people want to see dungeon content then 100% ILs are perfect for that. Any% is suppose to be a no restriction type category where you can prepare anything and everything you can outside of the dungeon to make the dungeon itself as fast as possible which is why I am for changing the timing. The any% ILs are already basically just go straight to the boss (except spirit) with a BA item where needed.

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: Amateseru on February 11, 2015, 09:09:16 AM
Oh Thanks Jbop for the Gdoc and thanks for the rule about the RBA I wasn't aware about that. I understand the point is to be fast (after all it's a speedrun) but since we can't really see the dungeon anymore... I don't know it sounds kinda weird to me x)

Title: Re: Individual Levels / Individual Dungeons (IL)
Post by: nickenator8 on February 19, 2015, 06:05:11 PM
I also think timing for your DC run is correct because you used the main entrance as the load zone you warped with.

Well, the rules on the spreadsheet you linked state "Timing starts upon gaining control of Link in the 1st room of the dungeon" so going by technicalities, using the entrance as a warping point should not be allowed. I guess you would have to start the timer in the first room and then leave and do the wrong warp, but you can't just warp from the entry point before entering the dungeon.
