Title: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on April 13, 2011, 03:05:15 AM
Current Task:

Task 3
(http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c77/Highguy2489/Pic1-1.jpg)
Your task is to start at the Temple of Time and enter 5 dungeons/temples. Any place that has a map and compass count (so Bottom of the Well and Ice Cavern would count). After entering you may simply leave and go to the next one, but you must enter 5. Timing ends after you have entered the 5th one.

There are restrictions on the amounts of items and the items you may enter with (you can gain more throughout the run, for example if you feel the hookshot would be useful, you can go and get it). The following pictures shows an example inventory:

The restrictions:

This one is much simplier. No more than 8 chus, no more than 20 bombs. If it's not in these pictures, you can have it in your prep file BUT YOU CAN'T USE IT IN ANY WAY. This also means you cannot have things like warp songs, you cannot have planted beans, or have stolen epona yet and have her outside of the market, etc. The overworld should be fairly clean, with the one exception below:

For the Overworld: There are some places that have intro cutscenes (like Lake Hylia, Goron City, etc.). If you are planning to go to one of these places, you can go and remove that intro cutscene in your prep file to save yourself some seconds. The current prep file only has Kakariko and Death Mountain Trail removed, so it is up to you to remove these if you want (The ones in Deku Tree and Jabu Jabu will not count against your time).

You may, however, put whatever items you are allowed on whatever C-button slots you want.

If you are playing on the Wii VC version, you can download a save here: http://www.mediafire.com/?pqz1vn21n7z3167
For information on how to transfer your Wii saves, please see this post: http://forums.zeldaspeedruns.com/index.php?topic=415.msg7367#msg7367

If you are playing on the N64 or GC, you will have to set up your own file.

Obviously, emulators are banned from this competition.

You cannot savewarp at anytime, however, death warping is allowed. To clarify: If you kill yourself you are allowed to say "No" to save and "Yes" to continue playing.

When you are ready to submit your time, PM me and send me the video file. I will then time it manually. If you don't care about people using your strategies, then you can just post it here or on youtube in public, but really, that's half the fun is coming up with your own strategy.

You will have until Sunday, May 29th to complete the task. I will accept all entries up until midnight on that day (11:59:59 PM on Sunday). If you have any questions about the rules, you can post them in this thread. If you feel that asking a question will give away your strategy, you can send me a PM.

Good luck!

I was thinking about this while the first TAS competition was going on, but because of the nature of the goals I didn't think this would be very fun. I can't TAS for shit, so I'm glad other people decided to start this. :D

Edit: I meant I didn't think other people would find it fun.

I would be so up for this.

I'm not really at the stage where I could compete with some of the guys on here but I would happily give it a go :)

dont worry about it toolex, i doubt the chalenges will be very long, so they will be easy to optimize. plus youc an at least compete with me, since i can only do superslides when i use naryus love =)

Post by: Runnerguy2489 on April 14, 2011, 09:02:02 PM
Yeah, I would definitely encourage anyone at any skill level to do this if they are interested.

Alright it seems like there is some interest in this so I will work on making a task and I'll update the first post and make another post when it is started.

How long do you guys want to work on each one? I think a week or two would be fine.

I think any longer than a week might be overkilll so yeah a week:)

I'm at exactly the same level as Toolex .. so yeah, although I won't be anywhere near a load of people on here I would be up for giving it a go!

TASK 1:
Your task is to start at the beginning of Dodongo's Cavern and ends after you touch the blue light to complete it. You may not leave Dodongo's Cavern during the run.

There are restrictions on the amounts of items and the items you may enter with (you can gain more throughout the run, for example if an enemy drops a deku nut you can then use them). The following pictures show the LIMITS of what you may start with. You cannot have more rupees, deku sticks, chus, etc. than what I have here in the pictures. You can have less if you want (for example if you feel you won't need 6 deku sticks and only want to start with 3, that's fine).

You may, however, put whatever items you are allowed on whatever C-button slots you want.

If you are playing on the Wii VC version, you can download a save here: http://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/ShortTask/Task1/Task1.bin
For information on how to transfer your Wii saves, please see this post: http://forums.zeldaspeedruns.com/index.php?topic=415.msg7367#msg7367

If you are playing on the N64 or GC, you will have to set up your own file. You may have either the Silver Gauntlets OR the Goron Bracelet. If you obtain the bracelet, you can only have an addition of Zelda's Lullaby (and Zelda's Letter) and Saria's Song in your inventory.

Obviously, emulators are banned from this competition.

When you are ready to submit your time, PM me and send me the video file. I will then time it manually. If you don't care about people using your strategies, then you can just post it here or on youtube in public, but really, that's half the fun is coming up with your own strategy.

So is 36 the max rupees you can have or just the max you can enter with. because you can bomb (With a bomb flower) a shrub and buy a deku shield for 50 rupees.

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on April 17, 2011, 07:25:29 PM
Those are the max numbers you can enter with. If something you kill drops rupees or deku nuts or whatever you are then free to use them too.

Is it one submission or can we submit after the first if we improve it?

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread

Good question. I would probably rather you wait until you are submitting just your best time but if you would happen to improve it, I will still take the improvement.

Webcam or something pointed at the TV should be fine. Not really too concerned with the quality. As long as I can see the first frame link starts moving and the frame he gets taken away in the blue light it should all be good.

Save warping won't take the same time on N64 that on GC or VC. So it may be unfair... But Runnerguy may convert time?

No. If he converts the time that VC gets a disadvantage on but not what N64 gets disadvantages on, I'm leaving the Zelda community.

Pokey stop being a retard and win by a large enough margin that it doesn't matter the version. You know you can beat 90% of the competition through the proper route alone.

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: ffgamer86 on April 20, 2011, 12:03:23 AM
I agree with Runnerguy that everyone should try to submit a run.  It would be nice to see how strats are come up with across the generation and you can learn ideas from the very good players and learn ideas from the average player.

I'm gonna say no on savewarping, and just for the future I'll say you can deathwarp and continue if you find a situation that is faster in.

Not when you go around and tell other people's routes.

except pokey, the people who need to be told about what the proper route is, are also the people who have not played the game enough to do some of the tricks required.

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on April 23, 2011, 03:46:08 PM
Just a reminder if you are planning to enter or submit something for this task, you have until the end of Sunday to do it.

Also, I was trying to think how I could present the videos and the times. I could probably add them all to one video to put on youtube like what was done for the TAS competition, or I could upload them as seperate videos and then just have links here. What is everyone's thoughts on that? Or any other ideas?

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: thundrio on April 23, 2011, 05:35:56 PM
just a couple ideas of how to present them. the TAS competition tasks were a lot shorter than this one so playing them back to back worked well, if it was done with this 8+ minute task, people could get bored. i dont know if this is in your capabilities (as in you have the required software), or if its what you meant, but my suggestion is to "cohost" all the entries on one screen so they all play at once, or maybe 2-3 at a time so it goes faster (you could always just show the top x entries and just list the times of the others)

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: ZFG on April 23, 2011, 05:44:56 PM
I was thinking putting them all in 1 video with them all side by side so it wouldn't end up as a 1 hour+ video.  The only problem with that is if there gets to be too many entrants it will can really crowded, but you could do what some of the TAS task competitions do and just not show some of the slowest attempts and limit the video to the 4-6 fastest runs.

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on April 23, 2011, 06:42:03 PM
Yeah my biggest concern was just having a video that was an hour or even longer where people would get bored. I like the idea of having a lot of them on the screen at once, so I'll mess with that.

Title: Re: Short Task/Competition Thread
Post by: Runnerguy2489 on April 25, 2011, 09:12:28 PM
I put a video together that has 4 players at once. It looks a little choppy but I don't think it turned out too bad. I'll see what it looks like on youtube.

My plan is to put a video of 1st place on their own, and then 2nd - 5th in the video at the same time, and then mention the others in the description. I will also post links to the runs if you want to see them all individually.

Then, I will work on making Task 2. With finals this week for me I probably won't get around to having it up until the weekend like last time.

Thanks to everyone who participated! I hope everyone will be able to look at the finished videos and learn something.

Putting multiple screens in one video isn't hard and shouldn't degrade quality/framerate. If you have Sony Vegas I can tell you how to do it really well, no problem. I guess I could make the video myself if I absolutely have to. Just let me know.

Here are the results for Task 1:

Place - Player - FINAL TIME
1st - sva - 8:30.800
2nd - ZFG - 8:46.700
3rd - Steve - 8:48.100
4th - Elminster - 9:15.900
5th - aleckermit - 9:25.933
6th - thundrio - 10:20.900
7th - Majora MIM - 10:28.067
8th - Lempy -10:52.133

I will have a video up in the next few days (shoutout to aleckermit for putting it together for me). It will show 2nd - 5th on the same screen, then the first place run by itself afterward.

EDIT: Video is uploaded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjUQFeudQJQ

I was pleased to see a good number of entries, and I enjoyed watching everyone's strategies and how they decided to go through certain rooms in certain ways. I would like to see more in the future!

I will post Task 2 some time tomorrow, and will likely do a similar schedule (a week to submit, and then a week off where I compile results) for the future.

I personally am very excited to see that sva won this task (and by such a large margin), as I am a fan of seeing people's ridiculous claims of saying only the "best" are capable of producing quality runs being disproved.

This may inspire me to enter a competition in the future. Also congrats to sva, great job :).

Also curious what sva did, since he beat ZFG by almost 16 seconds. I'd guess OoB hovering but that'd be insane with just bombs, so I guess we'll just have to wait 'til Runnerguy gets the video up.

Video is posted in my previous post with the results. Check it out! Note that sva's time in the results is the converted english text time; his video time is actually shorter.

Task 2
(http://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/ShortTask/Task2/Pic1.jpg)
Your task is to start at the beginning of the Gerudo Training Grounds and ends after you have collected all 9 keys. You may USE keys as you go, but it will end after all keys have been collected.

There are restrictions on the amounts of items and the items you may enter with (you can gain more throughout the run, for example if an enemy drops a deku nut you can then use them). The following pictures shows an example inventory:

The restrictions:

Left side equipment: You can have any quiver or bomb bag. You can collect any gauntlet that you want (NOTE: The Wii Save has blue gauntlets, these will push or grab anything, they are essentially gold). You can have any scale you want (the Wii save doesn't have it but if you want it, just head to the fishing pond and get it. Scarecrow Song is C-Left, C-Right, C-Left, C-Right, C-Left, C-Right, C-Left, C-Right).

Inventory: Any item NOT in the inventory, you cannot have (example: You cannot go get Din's Fire because it's not in that inventory). You cannot have the longshot (Ocarina of Time is ok as an upgrade to fairy ocarina though) and you also cannot have more than 10 of either bombs or chus. Those are the only counts I care about. If you want 4 bombs then go for it. If you feel you need 40 arrows or extra deku nuts, go for it. The item counts are only restricted to bombs and chus. You can have LESS of any of these things, for example if you don't want to get 2 bottles you don't have to. You can also put anything you want in your bottles (fish, fairy, etc.)

You may, however, put whatever items you are allowed on whatever C-button slots you want.

If you are playing on the Wii VC version, you can download a save here: http://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/ShortTask/Task2/Task2.bin
For information on how to transfer your Wii saves, please see this post: http://forums.zeldaspeedruns.com/index.php?topic=415.msg7367#msg7367

If you are playing on the N64 or GC, you will have to set up your own file.

Obviously, emulators are banned from this competition.

You will have until Sunday, May 8th to complete the task. I will accept all entries up until midnight on that day (11:59:59 PM on Sunday). If you have any questions about the rules, you can post them in this thread. If you feel that asking a question will give away your strategy, you can send me a PM.

Good luck!

Wow, that was a really cool lizalfos strat I missed out on. I'm still happy with how mine turned out, though.

Seeing the new task being the training grounds makes me hesitant to try it, seeing as I haven't done the whole thing in some 10 or 11 years...But I'll still check it out if I feel like it.

No, Biggoron Sword is not allowed.

If you are preping a file you don't have to RBA, I just did it in the Wii save since it was easier. But if you want to RBA then if you catch a bug with odd potion on C-right you'll get it.

If I can't find a way to make my VC oot works 60 Hz, I will surely not be able to do this task...

But I like challenge so I'll try anyway.
Unless your region change your Wii to NTSC it will run at 50 hz.

Just added that you can put other items in your bottles. If you think a fairy would save time by allowing a death then respawn, that's fine.

Okay, I'm almost sure I won't be able to play this task...

If I have a file with more stuff than required in which I haven't touched Training Ground, could I play it for the task without using any other items than required and loosing more than 3 hearts?

Um, that's interesting actually. I suppose as long as you don't use the other items it'd be ok. Also make sure that you don't run over the 24 second timer from underwater, since that's one of the strats involved here.

Sorry for taking so long with this:

Place - Player - FINAL TIME
1st - Mp16 - 6:40.467
2nd - Kazooie - 7:50.667
3rd - hitonbi - 7:54.367
4th - keeta - 8:05.767
5th - Elminster - 10:32.267

aleckermit will have a video when he gets it done. It will be similar to the last one.

EDIT: Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lztlqWvb1CY

I will probably have Task 3 up this weekend. I apologize for not having one for this week, but my weekend was busy. It will also be much simplier to understand the rules of, and overall should be a bit easier. I really liked task 2 but the way I presented it was too complicated.

Loooool, behind by over 2 minutes

I seriously have no idea how people managed it in sub 8

and I don't know why certain people were upset that I didn't give strats I mean I didn't cut the 10 wtf

can't wait to see this video

Video is now in the previous post I made.

Like I said, I really liked this task. It was clear from the video there was no clear cut strategy: Everyone did the keys in different orders. It seems like optimizing that was a challenge, and also the water room was the biggest time sink between runners. That said, 2nd - 4th all had times within about 15 seconds of each other which I thought was cool.

But my presentation of this task was poor; I shouldn't need two paragraphs to explain the rules. So I will learn from this and correct it for the next task, and hopefully that encourages more participation.

its in private/something/something/5 letter code that starts with n iirc/data.bin
in order for that to be there copy your oot save from the wii to sd card first, then just replace it.

also runnerguy, can i use a file that has the boulder in front of dc blown up already?

Would Ganon's Castle count, it doesn't have a dungeopn map or compass, but it has its own section on the IL page.

Can we blow up the rocks blocking the GC* warp/the rocks leading to the top of Death Mountain before starting?

There are no rocks blocking the DC entrance as adult.

Damn, I don't care about studies and homework! I'll give it a try!  :)

EDIT: Dammit! I prepared the file on my DC task file then I realized that I had goron bracelet! :(

I'm starting another but I suck at cucco jump, (2hours of attempts, 3 times get caught by the guards, 0 succes even with buffering! Damn I must be retard!) and my BotW chus skills are at absolute 0 (-273°C)!
This gonna be hard!

EDIT2: F you nintendo! My Wii doesn't read my oot disc anymore! It interrupted playing two times when I was saving in thieves' hideout!  :'(

i have a small suggestion rg, i have been reading the twitters of izu/sva/dada (with google translate), and they all seem to be trying to compete in the competition, but they seem to have a little difficulty understanding the rules (not a lot though). i'm not sure if there is anybody in the zsr community who speaks both languages, but it might be nice to have a translator translate the rules. iv also seen them complaining about zsr, but thats another topic (and who knows, one of them might speak a bit of english anyway).

They have spoken enough english to send me their videos and ask questions, and they have not broken any rules. I will do what I can for them but I cannot speak Japanese so would be of little help in that regard.

Here are the results for Task 3:

Place - Player - FINAL TIME
1st - sva - 9:29.1
2nd - izu - 9:59.033
3rd - ZFG - 10:57.1
4th - Steve - 11:26.433

aleckermit will be able to make a video early next week some time and I will post it here.

If anyone would like, I know enough Japanese to be able to (most likely) mediate between players/communities.
Also, is there any way to subscribe to this? I'd like to know when new Short Tasks are posted, but I'm pretty sure if RG edits the first post that won't trigger a thread subscription (if this forum even has them).

I typically make a new post when I also edit the new task in just so it shows up as new for everyone.

I will have a new task this weekend. Sorry for missing it the last few weeks.
