Game Time Topic
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:57:18 PM »
Game time has transformed a lot since its creation as an SDA-acceptable speedrun category. Modern day runs will use a lot of timestops. Does this completely break the divison? No, since what you can do during a timestop is limited. Does this make it so the game is completable in a fraction of the time it once was? Yes.

Here is the route so far, note that it is not complete yet:

Note that there are a lot of hard tricks, and some of them can be skipped if deemed too difficult by the runner.

Cycle 1:
~ Get 200 Rupees + Adultís Wallet (store in bank)
~ Get Magic
~ Get Bomb Bag (costs 50 rupees)
~ Watch WCT/Southern Swamp cutscenes (doesnít save time, but makes run look better)
~ Buy one set of Bombchus, a Deku Stick, and 10 Deku Nuts (see above) (combined cost 80 rupees)
~ Can get four Heart Pieces if you want, can save a bit of frustration in swamp
~ Get OoT and SoT
~ Play SoT to proceed to segment 1

Segment 1:
~ Song of Inverted Time ASAP
~ Re-enter clock tower
~ Song of Healing and Deku Mask
~ Re-equip Deku Mask, head back outside

~ Gossip stone timestop w/ Ocarina
~ Get two bomb drops from grass around Termina Field (19 bombs)

~ Save

Segment 4:

~ Activate bottle timestop
~ Back to the Swamp-Termina transition screen
~ Superslide into grotto (15 bombs)

RBA stands for Rare Bird Adventure. We call it that because we need to get the blue cucco in order to use it.

My route:

-Cycle 1: Get everything I'll need.

-Segment 1: SoiT asap, get out of clock-town west, gossip time stop then go get kotake's bottle as fast as possible.

-Other segments: always bottle time stop in each zone I'll visit.  :P
sorry for my soooo bad english.

Good luck when you go to climb that ladder, only to find that your ability to cancel timestop is negated and you can't enter the door. The routing is a lot more complex than simply timestopping everywhere. Any time you climb a ladder or interact with A (open, grab, etc), you cannot cancel timestop. In timestop, you cannot open doors, use your sword, be deku or goron, slash with Zora fins, or use C items. People overestimate the power of timestop.

I say ban timestops in game time, its like using an in game timer, but the runner can stop the timer whenever. In game timers are useful only if the timer is not breakable. Pausing in brawl to let enemies load is one thing, timestops in MM are a bit more extreme.

Also let it be known, for the no irc people, that i live MM game time. Especially as an SS. A shame how similar it is to any% now, but thats what happends when you find breaks...

Why though? The purpose of game time is to beat the game in the lowest ammount of, well, game time. The goal is not to emulate real time: that is what the, well, real time division is for. Adding timestops makes game time a lot more unique, a lot more challenging, and truer to its goal. I repeat again - timestops are not over powered as so many think they are. Besides, pausing and catching things in bottles stops time too, does it not. and you can be pushed by a bomb just before catching something in a bottle, so that you move a tad during the catching cutscene where time doesn't run. This isn't banned. Other timestops are just this to a greater degree.

Of course game time is not to emulate real time. But if the game timer is no longer an accurate means of time keeping, whats the point of it at all? Yes time stops when yuo talk to people and equip stuff, but no 'actual gameplay' takes place with the timer stopped.

Not that matters to the logic, but how much time do you think these timestops save altogether (aka for how many game hours would the timer be stopped)?

That I don't know, which is one of the reasons I'm testing this route. I'm not sure how accurate it will be though: I'm using a lot of savestates since I'm playing on keyboard. On the other hand, some tricks like ESSes I can't do on keyboard and other tricks I didn't think of until after I got past that point (such as not ISGing on the first timestop for Odolwa, only the second).

Also, the game timer is still accurate at keeping game time. It is just as accurate as it has always been in keeping game time. If it became night while the clock still said 10 AM, that would be inaccuracy, but right now the clock represents the time perfectly. And why does it matter when "actual gameplay" takes place? Even the term "actual gameplay" is subjective.

A time stop run could be as amazing as a "old-school" one. The speedrun will be based on the battles improvements and the many time stop impossible rooms. There will be challenge too, this won't be a 6:00 am run (that is possible with the time traveler glitch :P but realy not entertraining). Plus it would surely lead to a newer speedrun route which will refresh the speedrunning activities of the game.

Usually time stopping glitches are only banned if you can get a time of 00:00 or 00:01.

time stop is flexible enough to be a legit tactic

Time Traveler glitch? Never heard of it. What is that...

Well I'm not a hughe fan of using stop time in gamtime, but then again I'm not a hughe fan of gametime and using the glitch might make the route interesting again. making the goron mask worthwhile again for example.

Whats all this interesting, different, and entertainment crud? You want to turn into tasvideos, where entertainment is the goal, then speed (sometimes no speed at all)? Ban bk skips from the any%, that'd make it more interesting. Using rules to artificially make a speedrun more entertaining sounds awfully twingalaxies like...

Realistically, if routed out and done properly, this run would arrive at the clock tower with the four remains at the exact same gametime a TAS would, utilizing thousands of pause buffers (lol)

A gametime run would be entertaining as a TAS but not as a realtime run.

So, what are the exact rules now? The glitchesandstuff's reset any day is banned since it allows to finish at 6h00 am.

But we can use bottle time stops, can't we?

I'd say rules are that after the first cycle, time cannot be reset. It may be stopped or slowed down, but not reset (i.e. to 6:00 day 1).

There are some improvements necesary to this route with new tricks, I'll edit them in later. I need to get back to testing this...
