Released in 1993 for the Game Boy, Link's awakening was the first Zelda game NOT to feature Zelda.  Link is trapped on an island and must  go through 8 dungeons to awaken the Wind Fish so he can leave...  or you can screenwarp and beat the entire game in under 5 minutes.  The game was rereleased for the GBC featuring colour and an all new (optional) dungeon.

No screenwarp record currently exists.  The record on the black and white version is just over an hour and a half, single segment.  The colour version has a record of around 1 hour, 45 minutes, also single segment.  A DX TAS has been done in a time of under 1:10.

I'm going to be doing a B&W run.  I have an optimal screenwarping route for those who want to try it.

The current DX TAS is 1:09, an improvement is being made by Swordless Link which will be around 4 minutes faster.
Twin Galaxies' B&W record is 1:22 and 1:36 for the DX version. Both being improveable, obviously.

Would like some assistance in the making of these runs? As I have pretty much planned everything for them all three. For Link's Awakening it's mainly the bomb and arrow management. I made one awhile ago, but because of different strategies and such, it might be changed.

Good luck at least. If you would like to discuss more, add me on Aim/MSN or something like that.

You can help me if you want Tompa, but it's completely up to you.  I'm not going to force you to, but I'll take it if you're gonna do it anyway.

Just something about the route, I want to use the damage boost over the pit to get the tail key w/o magic powder.  I've done, so I know it's possible on console.

Oh, and the first post is edited with the actual TAS time and a link to the TAS.

Of course I'll help Wink. I've dedicated my life to this game.
I haven't written any route stuff so far, as I'm keeping all of that in my head for now. But I can upload the bomb and arrow usage I made, can be found here. I'll have to do some changes as that one was designed for the DX version of the game. One bombrefill in the route doesn't exist in the B&W version (After the miniboss in Face Shrine.), but I'll fix that I guess Smiley.

Are you going to try the Flying Rooster skip? You'll need to do at least three jumps in air using the hookshot for it to be possible. When I first discovered the trick I did it in realtime and I have been able to do two jump in a row so far. So it's doable to do in a segmented run.

Would you like me to write down a route, showing it in a movie or doing both?

Ok, I'll make a movie. Should hopefully be done by the end of the week.

Here's a run up to the start of Bottle Grotto. I forgot to do a S&Q after the end of dungeon 1, as that would probably be a good place to start a new segment.

Just got a PS3, and unfortunately it's on the same TV as my 'cube.  Runs will be on hold until after Christmas, sorry. Sad

Segment 4 is done, look for it in the playlist.

Tompa, I have a little problem.  I only have 1 and a half hearts left, I need two and a half to remain alive when I get past the enemies that rush towards you when you try and pass.  I have two options for the heart: the moldworm, or the spikes.  Because of the strat in the testrun, the spikes are killed by getting them down the holes, so the moldworm looks better than the other.  Or would it just be faster to wait for one of them to move out of my way?

You could be lucky and get a heart from the "crystal bush" in the Moldorm room Tongue. Will probably take you lots of restarts but it should be the best alternative.
Seg 4 was awesome btw!

I think I've discovered why I've been getting two hearts from that bush.

It has something to do with walking over the heart with your sword drawn (charging for a spin attack) soon after it comes out of the bush.  I've tested this with the bushes above the well, and it worked around 80% of the time (all of those misses were due to being too close or too far away from the bush, which shows that it only works on certain frames).

I've covered as many of my bases as I could, it works with the sword on either button, and will not work if the sword isn't drawn (no surprises there).  I can also confirm this works with rupees, but can't confirm if it works off enemy drops or any other drop (bombs, arrows, etc).

Oh yeah, picking up with both the sword and Link himself. I'm going to test this with the emulator right away.

The route I'll be using is the following:
Shield
Sword
(Here I'm not certain which one I'll use but):
1. Manipulate 10 rupees, win rupees, magic powder and the Yoshi Doll. Trade Yoshi Doll, Trade Ribbon, go to forest, grab 50 rupee chest, get the Tail Key, go to Tail Cave.
Or
2. S&Q, get the 50 rupee chest, win magic powder and the yoshi Doll. Trade Doll, Trade Ribbon, get key, go to Tail Cave.
Or
3. S&Q, get the 50 rupee chest, get mushroom, go to witch and get magic powder, get the tail key, win the yoshi doll, trade ribbon, go to Tail Cave.

Trade the Dog Food, go to rescue Bow Wow, S&Q, take the 50 rupee chest in the swamp, Bottle Grotto.
Reneter the dungeon to get 50 rupees, activate the warp to the right, S&Q, go out from the forest on the right side, grab the 50 rupee chest in the cave outside the village, buy shovel, buy bombs, buy bombs, steal bow, leave Bow-Wow, trade the bananas for the monkeys to fix bridge, Kanalet Castle. Get the Slime key, escape the bush maze, open the dungeon from the wrong side of the keyhole, Key Cavern.

Trade Stick for Honeycomb, go to Animal Village, trade honeycomb, warp to the village, get the ocarina and 100 rupees, see Marin at the beach, S&Q, warp to animal village, wake walrus, get the Angler Key, S&Q, warp to the moutain, open dungeon, go to the Angler's Tunnel.
*In here, just get the Flippers and then S&Q out from there*
Learn Manbo's Mambo, use the warp to ge to Animal Village, learn Ballad of the Wind Fish, go to Catfish's Maw.

Face Key, Face Shrine.

Use Manbo's Mambo, go to the sign maze to get the Song of souls, free the Flying Rooster, use Manbo's Mambo, go up the mountain, get the Eagle's Key, S&Q, go to the left,, go through the Fire Cave, play the Song of Souls for the turtle and enter the dungeon.

Go up the mountain again, to the right this time and on the way to Eagle's Tower.

Drop down from the mountain to the cave outside Angler's Tunnel. Finish the dungeon, use Manbo's Mambo, go up to the Wind Fish's egg and beat the game.

That's the main route at least. I could go deeper into the dungeon routes if neccesary, I'll explain tricks and such later on.
