Title: Boss Battles and Silent Realm Time Trials
Post by: ZFG on November 16, 2011, 06:19:20 AM
So this game has boss battles mode like OoT 3D, found in Lanayru Gorge by talking to the thunder dragon after healing him.  It's a bit more annoying than OoT 3D though because you can't quit in the middle without dying and there's a lot of text before each battle.  There's also time trials for the silent realm tears.  Post your best times for any of them here.

Mine:
Ghirahim (1) - 29.96
Scaldera - 1:22.13
Moldarach - 1:13.23
The Imprisoned (1) - 1:38.96
Koloktos - 2:36.96
Tentalus - 3:28.99
Ghirahim (2) - 1:44.76
The Imprisoned (2) - 2:05.73
The Imprisoned (3) - 1:18.73
Horde Battle - 3:03.56
Ghirahim (3) 2:47.76

Faron Woods Silent Realm - 4:42.03
Eldin Volcano Silent Realm -
Lanayru Desert Silent Realm -
Skyloft Silent Realm -

We'll probably get a leaderboard up soon.  So post your best times!

Sweet. I've played against a few bosses when I attempted to get hylian shield (I failed), I'll get my times up when I get home from school!
I can see that I've beaten your time on at least 2 bosses. (I've only played against 6 of the bosses so far)

And silent realm is awesome. I do not see why so many hate it. When I streamed people were like "ohh, I'm happy I'm not the one playing now" as soon as I reached a trial. :p

Also, in the hero trial you get to play against the last boss aswell, right? I've not completed the game on hero yet, so I'm not sure. (I've mainly focused on getting 100% on my first save. I miss 4 heart pieces (or 1 medal) and 10(?) "starbits").

Edit:
I just came home, did a run to get hylian shield and here is my records for the bosses I played against, most of them were first try:
Ghirahim (1) - 34.?? (I did not read the entire time before continuing, but it is bad anyways, so I'll try to improve it)
Scaldera - 37.29
Koloktos - 2:34.06
Molderach - 1:14.79
Tentalus - 2:45.33
Ghirahim (2) - 1:17.93
The Imprisoned (1) - 2:00.13
The Imprisoned (2) - 2:12.46

I'll update with more times later.

I love the Silent Realm, it gets a lot of undeserved flak imo. As a plot device I think it's pretty weak, but the actual task itself is quite fun, I'm glad it made it in as a time trial.
Btw, you don't get to play the final boss in the hero trial. However that might not be the case on a ng+ file, who knows.

Anyway, might as well post my times. Battles aren't optimised at all, just did a runthrough now for the sake of checking the times (please let me know if you can check them without actually entering the battles srsly). Silent Realm ones are a little practiced.

Ghirahim 1 - 0:23.16
Scaldera - 0:42.06
Moldarach - 1:20.59
The Imprisoned 1 - 2:00.29
Koloktos - 3:15.03
Tentalus - 3:42.96
Ghirahim 2 - 0:57.93
The Imprisoned 2 - 3:40.79
The Imprisoned 3 - 2:59.99
Horde Battle - 3:09.43
Ghirahim 3 - 2:54.79

Faron Realm - 2:44.73
Eldin Realm - 5:10.96
Lanayru Realm - 3:05.49
Skyloft Realm - 3:44.26

I would like to get into running this game. However for the time being I'm learning OOT for a marathon. I should post around here more, though. x_x

edit: updated lanayru realm

there should be a note somewhere stating that hero mode erases your savefile and you need to backup it before beating the game if you intend to play more of that file. (guess who fell for it?)

btw, i just noticed the boss that was possesing the flying fish is absent. they should have included that guy instead of 3 Ghirahim battles.

It does tell you that you will overwrite your file and start all over if you choose to play in hero mode.
I had to say no when they asked if I wanted to start hero mode, then copy my file, and then beat the boss again so that I could start hero mode and keep my original file.

still, it is done in a kinda dick move. they should have done like Wind Waker where the game lets you save to a different slot.

Yes, nintendo were stupid this time. They did many stupid things in this game. (that isn't related to the actual gameplay).
For example: Defeat ghirahim in boss battle.
You want to play against ghirahim again.
You'll have to go through over 1 minute of conversation with the thunder dragon just to reset.

And I ask myself, why the HELL did they design it that way?
The thunder dragon ask you useless questions, tell you useless things, and not to mention that navigating in the menu is just generally slow.
It is so damn slow that I even requested some kind of code to decrease the amount of time it takes to start a boss battle over at the wiird forums, where they create "cheat codes".

And why didn't they make the game so that when you've seen a cutscene once on your console, you're able to skip it on any save file, including a standard one. This would force you to watch them once. That should be enough.

These are some things that doesn't affect gameplay, but it just slows everything down, and they could've done something to prevent it.

I used the trick I found earlier where you jump down into the water to skip the snake sequence of the boss. (Time it right and you save a lot of time)

Not convinced both vines are faster than the slope when climbing the center, but it does look faster on the map. :/

I don't know if I should post it here or in tricks & discovery...I'll do it here ;): You can use potions before talking to the Thunder Dragon and you will still have the effect of the potions while in battle!

For example the horde battle will get so much easier and faster this way...just "run & gun" down while you have stamina+ and guardian+ potions active, got 2:3x on Hero Mode ::). This fight was my main problem in the boss rush on Hero Mode, btw not worth the playthrough after all, you'll only get 9,900 rupees after defeating all 12 bosses, though. If you drink the potions, while having a potion medal in your inventory the effect will last 9 minutes, about 5 fights invulnerability.

wtf... Doesn't that mean stamina potion in silent realm? That is like cheating. Almost feels like timestop in OoT3D, lol.
I hate it when such things happen.
This will make the silent realm A LOT less interesting. The stamina is one of the key features of the silent realms.

Potions in boss battle is useless though (except for stamina), since you're not supposed to get hurt, lol.

Thank god. :|
I got scared like hell for a minute.
Good thing is that potions is almost useless in boss battle, unless those where you gain time on running a lot. (like the imprisoned).

_____

I wrote a silent realm tips guide earlier today, and noticed one key feature that not even I used: Run on water. This opened up a lot of different possibilities.
So I did some testing on the skyloft silent realm and came up with 2 improvements for the route, one which changed things around quite a bit.
I ended up getting 2:42 and 2:41 for each of the 2 new routes I found. The 2:41 time included me falling into the void once, which doesn't really help.
I didn't use the timesaver I found earlier, as it were test runs.
I should be able to get somewhere around 2:30! =)

Skyloft Realm: 2:41.19

Skyloft Realm: 2:39.26 http://www.twitch.tv/cloudmax94/b/300666778

_____

I requested Skyward sword over at Cyberscore. (boss battles, silent realm, clean cut & pumpkin pull) for those who have an account over there. Here is a link to the game: http://cyberscore.me.uk/game-tloz-ss.php.
At least that will give us some place to show our times/scores until we fix it here on ZSR. And it may cause others to join the competition. :p

Someone should really add SS to ZSR. I could help creating pages for it (the sequence break, including all 3 methods. Clawshot clip. Alecs timesaver in the fire dungeon. My timesaver in the skyloft silent realm trial. etc.)

I'm the one who requested the game over at CS. (I'm the one who made the layout even).
I mentioned it in a earlier post in this thread actually.

It would be nice if more people would submit their records.
Does not have to be first place either. It is just that there more people there is submitting to the charts, the more attention it gets.
More people want's to get in on the fun. Like "ohh, I think I could at least get a 2nd place on this one" and then they end up getting serious, and eventually make it to the first place. :P

Hey first time poster here.

I love punch-out, and therefore boss fight time attacks, and therefore This Thread.

Of note so far I have:

Ghirahim 1 14:56 (not spectacular, I know)
Scaldera 33:86 (lucky time)
Moldarach 1:08:96 (pretty clean fight)
Imprisoned 1 1:10:19 \
Imprisoned 2 1:23:93   (Love fighting this guy, reminds me of SotC)
Imprisoned 3 1:16:83 /
Ghirahim 3 1:03:16 (Under 1 minute might be doable, but this was an insanely good fight)

Haven't played the other battles too much yet. Going to upload videos in the next couple days, they'll be at www.youtube.com/R151NGT3MP357. I'll check this thread sporadically if anyone wants to discuss strategies and such. Probably, I will do some silent realm stuff later on as well.

The Imprisoned 1 1:01:66 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYCnCAP9D0w)

I'm awful at doing attack to spin overhand, so I did spin to attack here. I'm sure someone who can do the former reliably can break a minute here. Attack to spin is almost like a spin which hits thrice, you can see I pulled it off perfectly as a finisher on Ghirahim 1. So with that, you'd obviously save half a second per stake over my run here.

EDIT:

Haven't played around with Demise much yet, but that was great to watch. Wonder if there's a way to get the lightning to strike quicker at the start of phase 2. Agree with your comment in the video that the controls can fall apart when you're trying to rush everything, I've been practicing most of the combos I'd use in a given fight on save statues myself, try to commit them to muscle memory or somethin'.

I found a (just about) instant kill combo on Demise's Phase 2. It's really goddamn hard to do(EDIT: not as hard as I first thought, it thankfully works differently than I concluded earlier). Hopefully I'll at least get the combo on video, if so I'll upload no matter how bad the rest of the fight was.

Title: Re: Boss Battles and Silent Realm Time Trials (Major Spoilers)
Post by: Jackimus on December 08, 2011, 06:44:35 PM
Well, with moldarach you need to delay your 2nd hit to get a 3-hit combo after a shield bash, so that's why- if you just hack away, you're hitting him only once at a time. Also, it seems really obvious in hindsight to just kill him before he submerges, I have no idea why I wasn't trying that when I fought him.

That fight was extremely clean with regard to the sword bouncing off his stuff, so great job there.

That's how I said that I did demise phase 2 earlier. I hit him once between every attack, and after he is done attacking, you just spam attacks on him.
That's how I did it before I knew about the skyward strike anyway.
I was not aware that it was that fast though, since I'm quite bad at demise.

Horde Battle 2:02:49 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTz5lV9R5dc)

Scaldera 0:20:93 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI_K98GJ7pM)

I think my horde battle strategy is solid.

Ghirahim 3, under 50 is possible but you'll have to gamble in phase 3. I'll do that later, really wanted to show the strat on a good run. (on an infuriating note, based on the way he flipped his sword, if I had gambled I would have Won)

Scaldera fight is quite nice, but there's (always) some decimals to be gained there.

EDIT:

Current PR Table:

Ghirahim 1 09:03
Scaldera 20:93
Moldarach 41:66
Imprisoned 1 1:01:66
Koloktos 1:54:33
Tentalus 1:46:33
Ghirahim 2 17:89
Imprisoned 2 1:18:69
Imprisoned 3 1:01:59
Horde Battle 2:02:49
Ghirahim 3 51:86
Demise 30:79

A Japanese player by the name of sirhu923 has what I believe to be the records for the Horde, Imprisoned 1, and Imprisoned 2:

The Imprisoned 1 in 59:03 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GECGCGFCe4Y)
The Imprisoned 2 in 1:13:16 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlcknfIaXjY)

Then, I'll get to work on those!!!

Horde shouldn't be too tough, I compared my run with his, I was about 7 seconds ahead after the 3 moblins, before my run got semi-ugly. He fought Imprisoned 1&2 differently than I did, so I guess I'll see on those ones. I'm not immediately sold on two Groosenator shots in fight no.2, but I'll mess around with it. Toes first on no. 1 is a surprisingly good idea though.

Horde Battle 1:23:93 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZm5PdOJg3A)

Someone on youtube tipped me off that you can jump over the barrier in Horde Battle where 3 moblins spawn. Well, I did him one better and jumped off the edge (you land right by the Stalfos). The run is obviously not perfect, but when you're ignoring hundreds of very pissed off bokoblins, you take what you can get.

Jackimus, how the hell do you hit Scaldera's eye without stunning him with bombs? I can do it but it just doesn't work half the time and I cannot figure out why. I need to figure out a strat for my test run.

Already you need to stand at a fairly specific angle and time the overhead swing just so- in terms of distance and as he comes down for the chomp. It also might not work without the Master Sword, the much shorter Goddess blade may not reach. Try jump-attacks? overhand spin attack? Also, I'm 99% positive the eye doesn't exist until you've fed him at least one bomb.

Also,

Ghirahim (3) 44:89 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhfkiTknqTA)

Really happy with this one, although I missed a jump at the way beginning of the fight.

It works fine with the goddess sword, you can use a skyward strike instead of a direct sword hit. it just plain doesn't hit half the time :/ It hits the rock and breaks without hitting him, even if it hits right on the eye. It's really confusing.

Title: Re: Boss Battles and Silent Realm Time Trials (Major Spoilers)
Post by: Jackimus on December 20, 2011, 05:24:38 AM
hmm, maybe the skyward strike has a tighter window of availability that flat out swinging the sword? I'm not sure what to tell you honestly, outside of it being an admittedly tough move to pull off consistently. My boy's just about at that guy on his save file, I can try messing around with it there and see if I can find any timing trick or something to help you nail it with more frequency. Obviously, it doesn't help matters that him dousing his flames seems to happen at a randomly determined interval.

Oh, speaking of that, since I forgot to mention it last post, that may be it. You can't strike the eye while he's on fire. I hope the solution to your difficulty is this simple.

Post by: Paraxade on December 20, 2011, 05:27:44 AM
It's not, I noticed already you can't hit the eye when its on fire.

I did figure out a couple things... namely, skyward strikes seem to do way more damage than normal goddess sword swings. also, you can drop a bomb in front of him so the skyward strike hits the bomb before it hits him which stuns him again and makes him immediately try to suck on another bomb... seems like it might be helpful for the second phase

strikes doing more makes sense since you start with full strike in hero mode.

Oh yeah, can't believe I haven't linked this...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/960633-the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword/61263712

(enemy HP table and damage values)

There are some mild inaccuracies, but for the most part it's quite solid. Helpful for planning attack combos and such, I know I made use of this in several fights (in others though, number of hits is what matters, not damage so this is useless).

For example, you can see that in Hero Mode a skyward strike will do as much damage to Scaldera as attack to spin. I know you have a reasonable amount of time to get some hits in, so you probably should be able to charge skyward strikes and use those while he's stunned too. I can't confirm anything with the skyward spin, but if that gets a damage boost too, you can (in theory) kill him almost as fast as you could in the boss rush.

So according to this :

Moldarach (Fight #1, Head): 16 HP
Goddess Sword (Skyward Strike, Hero Mode): 16 damage

You could insta kill moldarach's eye with a skyward strike ?

Title: Re: Boss Battles and Silent Realm Time Trials (Major Spoilers)
Post by: Paraxade on December 20, 2011, 05:33:44 PM
I'm pretty sure Moldarach always takes the same number of hits regardless of the sword you're using so he's probably wrong there. can't be 100% for sure though

Title: Re: Boss Battles and Silent Realm Time Trials (Major Spoilers)
Post by: Jackimus on December 20, 2011, 05:34:21 PM
That's one of the inaccuracies, moldarach is hits, and not damage (5,7, and 4, every time). I COULD BE WRONG I GUESS, if they gave him different rules in the storyline fights, but it's definitely hits in the time trials, try using spins on his claws and you'll see what I mean.

Also something is seriously messed with the HP values that guy gave to Koloktos, because the Master sword absolutely does not do as much damage as a Koloktos great sword (bombs do however, though I have not made use of this in a useful fashion to date). Phase 1 number is also seemingly way off.

Imprisoned (2) 1:08:89 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Btyph-TWj8)

This is another good strat, which is probably ideal for a full run, since it skips him grabbing the ledge (cutscene) and the 1st dialog with Groose is shorter as well. Though, I imagine the timing in phase 1 will be much trickier without the clock on-screen. (Jump right after 23 secs, swing first time right after 25 secs).

I improved a couple things while visiting my sisters (they wanted me to show off), no vids though, I need to re-improve all these ones anyway:

Ghirahim (2) 17:16 (still not best strat!)
Imprisoned (1) 1:00:39
Demise 27:49

I wouldn't bother with these for the rankings you guys keep on this site, just consider (the first one anyway) the new time to beat.

With regards to Ghirahim (1), sub 8 should be feasable, in the video above, the attacks used in phase 2 weren't optimal (too many spins!), also in another mid decimal 8 run (by Sirhu) more time can be saved by jumping/running towards him right before the mid battle cutscene.

I also want to improve my Horde Battle, it looks kind of atrocious in hindsight.

Won't have a chance to until the new year though, my sisters begged to borrow my game for awhile. Gives all you guys a chance to catch up a bit!

I've been trying something completely ridiculous with Imprisoned 1. I think it MIGHT be doable, and it would save a bit, but my skills can't compete with the times you guys get. Thus, even if I managed, I couldn't really tell if it was faster

The thing I've tried is that after the second set of hits, you jump back to the center of the Sealed Grounds, and use the middle hole to fly all the way up to the air, (With that steamhole, you can then steer your falling) and try to fall on the head of the Imprisoned just at the cutscene where the sealing spike rises up from his head again.

The issue is that it would require timing and your placing before the cutscene to be nigh perfect. So far I've alway just missed the head, and I'm not even sure if the game allows this. An alternative is to fall around the area you would normally run to, and jump from there at a decent timing.

If it would allow it, you ould basically get to start right beside the sealing spike, and then hit it down thrice, saving a seond or two.

There is another strategy to beat imprisioned(1), which involves using the central jet stream to land directly on him between phases. Its not any faster but looks cooler IMO.

During the Imprisoned(2) if you choose to go for feet then you can leave his back heel for last, strike it twice to weaken it, then when you are sufficiently behind him finish the heel off with an arrow and when he falls down his head will be by you, skipping having to otherwise run around his body.

You can actually outright kill each toe with a single charged shot from an arrow. There's possibly a faster strat in there than the one I used for 1:08, can't really test it now, my game is still out on a loaner. My thoughts regarding this are, phase 1- as is (deliberately slow, skipping ledge grab), but try and be thrown off to the front of him (rare), phase 2- use nunchuk c charged arrows to kill all the front toes, run between his legs to the rear, use arrows to kill final toes; phase 3- Groose shenanigans. Actually, the way the outlined method is playing inside my head at this moment might push sub 1 minute depending on how everything lines up position wise in phase 3. Won't be faster outside of the boss rush, since you'll have an extra cutscene when he falls from lack of feet, and a longer one after phase 2 as he gets up and prepares to slither for awhile.

I'm also now thinking Imp3 might be faster with arrows in phase 1, mainly since you'd be in better position to run for the spike in phase 2, this also needs testing I can't do right now, and also won't be faster in a full run due to extra cutscene of him falling/longer one where he has to get up before starting to fly.

Also recently had an idea with Koloktos where (in phase 2) on the final hit of a greatsword combo you also detonate a bomb which, if both the last hit and the damage from the bomb can both count, is enough to skip the last repeat of the motions (since you only need one greatsword hit the final time for the kill (3-3-1)).

On Imprisoned 3, after you hit him with the groosenator in the second cycle the cutscene warps you so your position doesn't matter.

Right.

Alternate idea: use the large geyser in phase 2, possibly preserving the unused bomb for phase 3.

Pretty sure Groose never has a bomb in cycle 3 whether you use the cycle 2 one or not. Imprisoned 3 is a pretty heavily scripted fight. :/

Finally got my game back...

Some new ones:

Ghirahim (1) 8:06 (gunning for under 8, I've already ruined a few sub 8 pace runs. was 3:33 at cutscene here, I have had 3:16 a few times. Also, accidental vertical spin.)
Ghirahim (2) 16:43 (too much luck involved, but 13:xx is possible)
Imprisoned (3) 59:39 (used para's new strat. Sucked balls at the spikes but ehh new best)

All 3 are improvable, so no vids for now. I have 8:06 on video, if I eventually fail and subsequently give up at 7:xx I'll upload that.

EDIT:  Link to 8:06 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKvPG6qGVjs). My first combo in phase two was awful, and phase 1 was 2 time units off my consistent best. 7:7x sounds reasonable for a max on this guy.

Demise 24:56 (new strat)

Working on a video, my current best is a tad slow compared to what should be feasable, high 22:xx I am thinking. Phase 2 has a slight tweak, and phase 1 is completely brand new (it's an endless combo good for low decimal 8 secs). Stay tuned....!

EDIT: This strategy is larger bullshit than I initially figured, at least when trying to rush it. I have a crappy 25:13 run on video where I deliberately was careful about what I did if anyone needs to see this new strat immediately. I've almost entirely given up on 22:xx (although it is very possible), so once I get 23:something I'll upload for sure, probably going to be a few days.

Demise 24:46 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H-J38JGsn4)

I stand by my initial estimate of high 22:xx being possible, but the phase 1 needed for it is ridiculous. Even "taking my time to do it right" in the above video is kind of, well tough. Nearly every attack has to be in a specific direction, and throwing in 4 instances of attack -> spin is simply hell, I can't even complete this faster phase 1, at least not yet. Lost a bit of time early phase 2, being a bit late starting the combo (tough to time). Until someone crazy beats this time, I'm happy for now.

EDIT: Occured to me that I should elaborate a bit on phase 2 as well. The attack where he shoots the wave of lightning at you likely runs on a timer of some sort (5-ish seconds from the looks of things), if he's not in the middle of another attack he'll do it immediately. Luckily, his vulnerability period starts at this time whether or not he actually is doing that one attack, so that's how I was able to start the 9 hit combo from a standard vertical swipe of his.

Used ZFG's route. Of note, I am using a tiny trick which might be enough for sub 2 mins (roll into the crawlspace). I'm horrible at the vine climbing bit near the beginning right now though, so that's an ambition for another day.

Random improvement while practicing for a full boss rush run.

If you manage to grab the tear surrounded by waking water then jump over it to leave the ''circle'' and roll when landing, you might be able to save another 0.50 seconds... But that's just an idea. I really don't know how to get sub-2.

Couple new ones. My records are getting tougher to improve, which is why I haven't posted in a couple weeks.

Ghirahim (3) 0:39:93 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fhkbgSlmRY)

There is a way to end phase 2 with one long combo, but it's slower (by about 1.5 seconds) than the method used here. It CAN be done without a shield though, to do it, attack to spin to knock the sword out of his hand, quickly charge a skyward strike and stab 2-4 times. Charge another skyward strike while backing away (too close and it wont work), and stab continuously to end the round. In phase 3 without a shield, use skyward strikes while moving backwards to get him to raise his guard without having to shield block one of his attacks. It is possible to clear 50 seconds without a shield if everything goes well.

Horde Battle 1:10:13 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psk1Tv0ixoc)

Really happy with this time. Didn't get the crazy good ending in my old 1:14 run, so a time like 1:07 is probably possible, 1:04ish with potion glitch.

Faron Silent Realm 2:08:39

Still awful at the vine climbing bit. Probably will record a run and move onto Lanayru once I can get 2:05s reliably.

Hey first post. The page where the records are kept is pretty out dated but I was surprised to see there and even throughout this thread that there was a large gap from first to second place for Koloktos.

So if those are still the standing scores my fight would be second place: http://youtu.be/B70Xka41Lwc

There are a bunch of mistakes in it and it still ended in 2:04.36. I only tried to do it for a few hours so I think I could score sub 2 minutes but probably not nearly as fast at Jackimus.
