3DS Add on info (May 2011)
Quote
Neal Tew (alias, Jumbotron Guy), is working on something awesome: 3DS Capture Add-On.
I can't tell much about it, but I've seen the photo he send me, and I can say, it's looking great, simple, and easy.
Why I can't tell much about it? I've promised to not tell anyone to much details yet.

According to the emails he send me, it's all about that he'll possibly sell these Add-On's to the public.
The Add-On will be mounted on the back, but it will take a couple of months before it's released, as the wirings is to difficult to install, and he's looking for an alternative way, so anybody can install it.

It has 2 HDMI ports for TV's, and 1 USB port for PC's.
The HDMI's will require 2 TV's for all screens, but he's also planning to be able to use 2 screens on 1 TV.

Looks like I need to buy some new stuff like a faster PC and/or a HD TV + Capture card.

Ocarina of Time 3DS may be possible to record directly now and other DS classic games too (hello Phantom Hourglass). Pokémon Black & White still has a disadvantage because the DS Phat/Lite models can be 'RNGd to get flawless Pokémon easily without using the C-gear. The DSi/3DS models works a bit different.. and they still haven't figured out the logics on those systems yet :(

He is still trying to implement a feature that enables both (3)DS screens to be displayed on 1 HDTV and figuring a way to enable 3D on 3DTVs.

Edit: Apparently this is a very early version, and it's very hard to install. He is trying to find a easier way to install the add on but it might take a couple of months.

Good news for DS Phat owners!

Quote
"For people still wanting a DS Capture Device, act right now!
Loopy will have only 100 Boards available in 3 weeks.
You'll need to have a DS Phat, though, since Lite works a lot different, it's harder to program for, and it has less space.

Unlike mine (Yami), this is a really small board you have to connect inside your DS Phat, without any soldering (it's a passthrough method)."

So what are the benefits of having a DS Phat Capture device?

The ability to play import DS games that has DSi enhanced features
Examples: Pokémon Black and White, Solatorobo

It's a cheaper portable to play DS Classic games with direct recording support.
Prices ranging around £40-60 online

What the DS capture device cannot do:
(Unconfirmed) Seems like the recording can only be done via USB
(Another unconfirmed) It the cables goes through the GBA slot then footage that requires a GBA game to unlock more content isn't possible.
Cannot play 100% DSi only related software (from retail like Face Training to DSiWare like Mighty Flip Champs)

it sounds okay but not very practical if you want the whole DS library + 3DS stuff.

i guess it helps DS runners a lot at least. i'll hold out for the 3DS version.

More info on the DS Capture device

http://www.yamihoshi.nl/files/images/dscapturing.jpg

The capture boards get shipped as a self install kit: The board, a screwdriver, and a USB Cable.
However, you’ll still need to make an extra hole in your DS Phat system.
It’s been hoped to release in 3 weeks, which can be changed on anytime, and it could cost around 40-60 US Dollars, depending on the total costs on the hardware.

More images and info.

The USB port is by the wrist strap hole.  Here are a few more pics. You can see the stylus holder also needs to be removed.

I am still trying to figure out.. I'm guessing it's a DS Lite model because it has way less space than the image below (it's one of the few reasons why the DS Classic Capture device only works on the Phat models)

The oval hole is originally the wrist strap hole

This is what the add on will look like upside down without the motherboard, the usb fits into the wider gap (from the 2nd image in this post) that used to be for the wrist strap

What it looks like without the passthrough add on.

What it looks like with the passthrough add on, tight fit.

The actual USB port, requires removing both the wrist strap slot and the stylus slot (so the stored stylus doesn't interfere with the usb passthrough add on.

Title: GREENALINK HAS DS CAPTURE DEVICE
Post by: Greenalink on October 01, 2011, 10:14:26 AM
Unfortunately I can't make any videos yet because:

* My 'old' main pc has a stupid SYSTEM32 error on boot up and I can't figure out a way to boot up in SAFE MODE (tried holding F8 but that didn't work).
* I received a new PC on the same day as my old one got messed up. The problem for the new pc is that it does not have Windows installed yet. I'm planning to get Windows 7 Ultimate from Amazon at roughly £80, way cheaper than getting it installed by the guys/gals at the PC building website (in this case Dinopc.com)
* I'm using my brother's laptop and it can't even open up .exe files -_-

So my new PC is currently running XP at the moment, I got the internet running and I have done a few tests with the DS Passthrough Capture device.

I'll make some semi-proper videos soon for you viewers to watch.

This one was recorded with Xsplit Local Recording followed by a few cuts of 'messed up footage' with Virtualdub.
Not worthy enough as a RAW for SDA but it's good for Youtube uploads at least.

Pokey and Kosmicd12 be prepared for Super Mario 3D Land .... if they are selling/accepting modded 3DS units outside of Japan.

Edit: Loopy, the one responsible for the DS Phat mod back in late 2011 thinks that if this 3DS mod uses the Chameleon board there is a rumor that it can only capture the bottom screen.

Title: Re: NEW news about 3DS capture mod (May 6th 2012)
Post by: Greenalink on May 06, 2012, 10:38:21 AM
There has been a good amount of news in the past few weeks for the 3DS capture device.

The mod will be available at mid June the earliest, but this is an optimistic guess from the creator himself. I would roughly guess late July-August to be available at the latest.

It will be out in 2 different models.

USB only
(http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/3DSCapture/dev/10.jpg)

USB & 2 HDMI slots
(http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/3DSCapture/dev/06.jpg)

There hasn't been a price for either of these mods yet. I paid $50 for the DS Phat USB mod. Good chances these will be much dearer thanks to being a newer portable and much more wider range on playable software (DS, DSiWare, 3DS, 3DSware and VC).

Livestreaming with the DS has been a piece of cake, using Screen Region tool on Xsplit. This one will be no exception. Now if and I do mean if the HDMI can be downscaled through a converter to composite, in theory you can record (3)DS related footage onto the DVD recorder. I find this much more reliable if you are very concerned about frame drops. Then I can use the output from my TV to livestream with EZCap so I can livestream and record serious runs at the same time.

Yamihoshi has a 'work in progress' version where it's only good at taking screenshots. The video transfer is nowhere near as optimised that it will only record 3 frames per second when recording it.

For anyone who is wondering, it looks like the 3ds capture devise listed before in this thread will be coming soon. According to this source (http://www.yhctr.net/) it is expected to be finished early August. Also supposedly it will cost somewhere around 200 USD, although this price is not official. This thing is looking pretty awesome :D

Also the first batch (that release on early August) will only have a USB Capture support. NO HDMI OUT.

Title: Re: NEW news about 3DS capture mod (May 6th 2012) see latest page.
Post by: Greenalink on July 29, 2012, 02:44:25 PM
It is unfortunate that the first batch lacks HDMI but on the SDA topic there might be a trade in method (USB only for USB+2x HDMI) once it's available. When I get my hands on one I will make an encoding guide when recording a raw .AVI (not Xsplit). Price point isn't going to be easy, DS phat mod was only $50 + postage. This one is for the newer 3DS and... region lock means another 3DS and another mod if OoT 3D JP becomes just as important as OoT console JP.

Title: Re: NEW news about 3DS capture mod (May 6th 2012) see latest page.
Post by: Nook on July 29, 2012, 06:13:32 PM
Every text box in OoT3D can be skipped, and the text is rather fast anyway. Unless there's a J only trick or use, region lock shouldn't be such a problem for OoT3D.

Curious that it isn't HDMI (yet)

I must say that I am rather disappointed with the price if it will in fact cost 200 USD. I was hoping for 100 USD at the most. I guess that was just wishful thinking though. Also I think Tom is right about text speed. It really shouldn't be a problem, or at least let's hope it's not.

A let's player acquired a 3DS capture card: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shh1tb8kiaw&feature=plcp
It is unknown if the capture card is Loopy's work or someone else's but I don't know anyone else working on one. The capture cards were also supposed to be released on August.
Also: does the HDMI modle produce better quality than the USB model? Probably a dumb question but whatever.

This appears to be Loopy's work.
HDMI does not produce better quality I think. However I know very little about this kind of stuff. To my knowledge it just allows you to connect the 3DS to a television screen or something of the sort.

Post by: Greenalink on July 31, 2012, 09:35:20 PM
It is possible to connect the 3DS to a TV with USB only by connecting 3DS capture app abled PC/Laptop to a TV via VGA/HDMI and full screen the app. I did that on my DS phat mod. HDMI could lead to a more stable recording method by using a converter box to downscale HDMI to composite/S-video and connect that to a DVD recorder. Assuming the resolution stays intact and doesn't stretch the screens.

This means the time estimate for me to receive my modded 3DS is week commencing August 20th.

I'll live stream some NSMB 2, Super Mario 3D Land and probably OoT 3D, checking out this doomjump fad going on.

There is now an installation guide on the site. This baby is going to be here really soon. Now I just need to figure out how to get the software running on Wine.

Post by: Greenalink on September 02, 2012, 08:51:24 PM
The installation guide has been on that site for months.

There are a few reasons why it hasn't been a contact details-esque section on the 3DS capture website:

Quote
Here's my predicament:  I have plenty of boards now.  I'm hesitant to start taking orders because of the aforementioned noise problem.  I've been aware of it for a while; I hoped I'd find a better solution or be able to brush it off, but no dice; I think it's bad enough that most people won't be willing to live with it.  I ordered a bunch of those ground loop isolators off of ebay, but it could take a couple of weeks before they're here.  I could pick some up from the local Radio Shack instead, but that's like $25 instead of $5.50, so screw that.  Another problem (really just my problem not yours, unless you're installing yourself) is that the screws I got for the case weren't very good, so installations are a pain.  Screws are slightly too wide so they get jammed and strip easily. I'm getting custom screws made but that will also take a couple of weeks (order was placed a while ago, but these things take time).

I haven't updated the website yet because I'm afraid it'll get damn awkward explaining this stuff.  Official price will be $200+shipping installed or $170+shipping if you're doing it yourself.  So, uh... I'm not sure where to take things at this point.  I'll sell you a board if you want, just so long as you're aware of the concerns mentioned.

I also need to mention that the price does not include custom clearance which costed me an extra £35 (~$65).

Oh if delivery doesn't screw up I am getting my modded 3DS tomorrow.

Noise problem eh? Well that really stinks. I think I'll wait for the better, not so noisy version, as I do need time to raise sufficient funds to purchase this. Any idea how hard this thing's gonna be to install? :P I'd really hate to spend money on something that I could do myself.

benstephens1000: The noise problem is only noticeable if you turn the speaker's volume up on a recorded video or if you are on a screen that is silent (like the stage names on NSMB 2).

Oh I've started a discussion whether or not if DS and lower resolution games played on the 3DS should use 1:1 mode (by holding Start+Select during boot up) should be used when recording runs + submitting them to SDA

http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/ds_retaildsiware_ruling_when_recording_directly_from_a_3ds..html

Think of it as the GB Player rule where you must not use the full screen feature, only this time it's on a 3DS.

GreenaLink I envy you now that you have one :P
I still need to save up some cash to get this so I can't even buy it now, so I'm gonna have to wait for a little bit before I can get it anyways. I'm not even really worried about a sound problem because sound isolators aren't even that expensive. What I don't want to deal with are those bad screws.
