Title: Q&A Ganondoor/Gohma Hover Trick Help Thread
Post by: Crank on March 04, 2013, 11:32:24 PM
Hey guys
the damn wrong warp still doesnt working.
Here a new Video with Tas Input
http://youtu.be/wtHoOrn_ybw

I dont think that the Ocarina Item glitch is the problem.Even with Tas frame by frame input the Wrong warp fails....

Well that video reveals the problem: you're playing on a PAL version of the game, which runs slower than NTSC and makes some tricks harder. One noticeable difference about PAL vs. NTSC is that Link's roll distance is shorter on PAL, which means the roll forward you do in this setup leaves Link too close to the warp if it is not done on NTSC. That also explains why the little steps forward you would do to correct yourself worked to get Link into the warp.

I've never done any glitches in OoT before (played it glitchless a few times), last night I was trying to wrong warp from Deku -> Ganon's Castle but couldn't do it. I've watched various tutorials on Youtube but can't seem to get it. Could somebody take a look at the my attempt?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaYgY8r52fY&feature=youtu.be

Thanks! I'm probably doing it horribly wrong but it's my first day messing with OoT so please don't be too harsh  :P

I'm pretty sure you aren't holding your control stick perfectly to the left, but instead slightly diagonal. If you are certain you are holding your control stick perfectly left, then it could also have to do with your controller settings.

Also be careful with releasing your camera (at 16 seconds in the video), it could mess things up. You want to keep your camera locked and only unlock it at the places the tutorials do it as well.

Thanks! I think it was a combination of the two, after adjusting the controller settings and not releasing Z until after moving forward it's working. I seem to be able to get it pretty consistently with a 360 controller, but only about 1/5 with an almost new official N64 controller (adaptoid PC adapter).

I've a problem with the Links House (Pause) WrongWarp fix.
I tried it out so many times, but everytime it warps me into a "new" dark room where i can hear the Deku Tree OST.
It's not the Dark Room with the burning Rocks that appears if you not fix the WrongWarp.

Could it be, that my Version is specific? I play on N64 NTSC-J Version 1.1

Yes. That specific version does not work with the pausing in Link's house trick. I've heard watching the hyrule field cutscene may work, so you can try that.

Post by: exe on May 04, 2013, 05:13:36 PM
Ok thank you very much. This method seems to be a bad alternative :(

It's only specific on the 1.1 Version right? With 1.0 you have no problem to perform the House fix?
If it's not so random to get a 1.0 Version on ebay :/

Pause fix works if you pause in the twin's house in v1.1 J

Edit: Pausing in Link's House does work with 1.1, but only if the language is set to English.

Hey it works...thank you very much.

Ok, it's a few seconds slower than the house method, but if WW goes wrong, the Run ist over. Its only important for races, because i'll never forfeit a race. Never give up ^^

The fact with the english text is nice to know, but then I can played the US Version instead. I have one 1.0 US.

Hi guys, been lurking for a while and started learning Ganondoor casually a while back.

I have a problem with the camera trolling me sometimes by being at the wrong angle after I do OI, so then I obviously can't continue with the setup. I don't even know why this happens, and I've tried messing with it using savestates to try to reproduce it consistently to know what to avoid, but I failed.

Why does this happen, and more importantly how do I avoid it?

Thanks in advance for any help :).

To compound on all ganondoor problems I also need help. It seems sometimes I can always get frames 3 and 4 correctly (from a save state after OI completed) but cant get others, and then there are other times it seems I can only get 2 and 5 correctly (I've never yet done 1 correctly).

What exactly does it mean when I'm warping outside the deku tree or just entering into the next room as normal (two most common mistakes I seem to be getting).

I've followed both pewdie's and tokyoboi's videos to the T and still somehow seem to be messing up some of the time. Is it perhaps camera angles? Or the time after the janky blue warp pan that I'm supposed to cancel OI?

gosh its so frustrating

Outside Deku Tree means you were late (usually meaning you opened the door late), Deku Tree Basement means early, Ganon's Tower means just right. If your game crashes, it means your timing was perfect, but the last cutscene you watched was incompatible for the glitch.

Being too early or too late could mean anything, since making even the slightest mistake between the positioning of the OI to the opening of the door can throw you off in either direction.

Someone could explain me the 8 backflips setup for Ganondoor ? I mean, how does it work after the ocarina item. I waste time by doing an other setup which is slower.

The second half of that setup has two versions I think. One where you roll and then slash you sword and one where you walk downward and throw a nut. I'm not too familiar with either tbh.

You don't need to hold left unless you already failed the clip once IIRC. Make sure you're also holding your shield out when you backflip. Also make sure it's the first big red eye frame and not the second (they look identical I think, but Gohma makes a noise during the second one as you unpause). If you seem to be doing everything right but you don't clip, Gohma might just not be in the right spot. Some people have said that if you ESS to pivot and turn around once you target the wall, instead of just doing a 180, it somehow helps, so that's what I started doing. tbh I have only gotten the clip like 3 times before, but the hardest thing for me is getting ISG (I waste so much time getting ISG that Gohma moves too close and it ruins the position). The only times I ever got the clip were when I got ISG while Gohma was still stunned.

I practiced ghoma clip yesterday for a few hours on emulator and I'm getting it like 6/10 times now. The thing that worked for me really well: get ISG while ghoma is stunned (can't say if its still working if you don't get it in the first try), untarget ghoma, turn around by flicking the stick down and z-target quick (dont move while turning), then start walking forward and make a slight curve to the right and aim for the place you're supposed to go. When you are in front of the door, facing it, Z-target, ESS position down to pivot 180°, hold shield and z-target. Now wait for the first big eye frame (2nd is where ghoma makes a noise when unpausing) and backflip. If you didn't get it in the first try, you can do it again by holding down-left while waiting for the next big eye frame and then you backflip on it. If you dont get it, something I wrote did go wrong. It just happens because you need to do it like this to get ghoma in the right place.

The mistake I did the most was after getting ISG, I tended to walk a bit too far to the left, which impacts ghoma. Just stay calm, turn around, then start walking the path I described.

If you're having trouble getting ISG, practice it a lot. It's a essential trick and you should get it 9/10 times to be honest. It's really easy and it's very useful in many places.

Hope this helps

I wasn't able to clip until i discover an other method, pretty easy, which make sure that gohma will be in the right spot when you'll backflip. I do deku nut crouch stab deku nut crouch stab x2 then I sidehop left while targetting gohma, untarget, ISG, and then i walk to the door corner. I found it thanks to a video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1QrwdsgQGs

However I still have trouble with this trick cause I can't kill her through the wall.

Hi,

is Ganondoor working on the PAL GC version? I tried it about 50 times and I get :

20% Into dekutree cutscene
15% Into the room before Gohma
40% Into Ganonstower, there I have a blackscreen and can´t move
25% Into Ganonstower, there I see Link but I can´t move

Whether or not it crashes depends on the last cutscene you watched (only cutscenes that begin as a new area is loaded count). If the last cutscene you watched is the title screen cutscene, you will always get a black screen. If the last cutscene you watched was the Deku Tree intro cutscene (where the camera pans around the room when you first enter), it will always work. If you just loaded your save file, the last cutscene in memory will probably be the title screen cutscene. You can clear this cutscene by entering Link's house and pausing the game. This will make the glitch work again, in case you already watched the Deku Tree intro CS and can't get it back.

That's strange... Try pausing in House of Twins instead maybe. I'm not an expert on this, but it's possible that GC PAL is different in some way.

You have to pause the game within Link's house, then perform the glitch each time you reset the game. Also, what language are you playing the game in?

Yeah it should still be possible to beat the game. You can get the hylian shield as adult. You need hover boots for adult DoT skip though. I'm not entirely sure what your goal is, but if you think it'd be easier to just start a new game, then it's probably a good idea.

my goal is just to run my first successful sny% run. ive gotten all of the glitches for ganondoor and on MM got my way to the second block of STT (im good at hovering off flat ground with bombs then a chu but not with two bombs. the chu runs off the block).

i decided to try a different route in OoT and got in this pickle.

EDIT: im playing on wii vc btw kinda why ganondoor is annoying? even though ive mastered dekubaba megasidehop

I posted this in the wrong thread, here's the conversation so far

I can do ocarina items perfectly anywhere else, but for some reason whenever I backflip into the blue warp in Gohma's lair and try to OI I just draw my sword and walk in.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

You are most likely doing something in the setup wrong and landing too far in the warp

This, and/or you're doing OI too slowly. There's a slightly smaller window for doing OI into a blue warp than there is if you're just doing it normally to play a song.

I'm still struggling with it.  Sometimes I just draw my sword and walk in, but I've also had it so I pull the bugs out, which keeps me broken from the warp, but takes up too much time and so I get warped.

I think when I just pull the bugs out, it means I'm doing OI too late, and not getting the sword input in.  I thought pulling my sword out meant I was doing it too soon (cutting off the input of the bottle somehow) but I also tested doing OI really fast and I can do it even if I do it immediately after backflipping.

I'm definitely not landing too far in, considering I'm landing in it at the very outer cusp of the port and still failing somehow, and I've tried two different setup methods to the letter.  I figure it has to be my input or timing somehow, but I have no idea how to change it.  Thoughts or insight?

EDIT:  I figured it out.  The window for OI starts pretty much on the same frame as you begin your backflip, and I really have been starting way too late and thus haven't been getting OI in fast enough.  Thanks for the tips!

I'm having trouble with Ganondoor at the moment. i do the 8 backflip method and then oi and hold right. when the weird camera zoom out/in ends i hit b (still holding right) walk a few steps, i think its 4 with the backflip method. and then throw my deku nut immediately hold z and left and i end up going the opposite way of the door.

ive tried holding down during the OI also and rarely he'll go the right way and get stuck at the wall the hump is which puts me behind frame 1 or 5? not sure

anyways i cant figure out why link wont run in the correct direction after i hold z and left immediately after deku nut.

i haven't been able to do this once in the month ive tried and just did my first successfull any% no rba ww in the last two days  ><

everything ive been doing is on Wii VC so its a pain not having save states im tired of pausing at links house and doing and megasidehopping off the deku baba even though it took me an hour to get my first time and now i can do it at least every other try. what sucks is i pulled the double KO on ghoma for nothing :(

clearly my positioning before the backflips are wrong?

EDIT when i hold down it yields better results but i swear i take no more than four steps and i end up stuck at the wall beside the hump. ill take a few more steps before i throw the DN

I think you're mixing 2 setups here. After doing the 8 backflips you can either:
-hold right for a few steps, roll and target, hold left, slash, and then do an adjustment in the tunnel depending on what frame you got

OR

-hold down for a few steps, throw nut and target, hold left, sidehop twice, and then do an adjustment in the tunnel depending on what frame you got

The first setup doesn't require a nut and it's slightly faster, but I think the frame window is smaller and I don't remember all the adjustment frames (there might only be two).

The second setup is the easy method and it seems like the one you're trying to do. If after throwing the nut you sidewalk into the wall instead of the tunnel, you either threw the nut too early or late depending on whether the tunnel is in front of you or behind you. I think there's a 5-frame window for the nut timing to still reach the tunnel, and a few different adjustments depending on what frame you got.

Thanks a lot!! I was getting them mixed up I did the oi roll sword sidestep and got it :)

Now I'm on phase two of ganon picked the master sword up and have hit him about 25 times with isg. What's wrong? I could have killed him three times over by now

I plan on using an emulator soon just got practice. I'm playing wii vc and it sucks not having save states when I'm learning.

Now I'm stuck at STT in MM I do the first block skip. I tried wierdshot and game froze and picture messed up. Trying to find an alternative

edit: ugh still having problems with ganondoor im trying to get it consistently. sometimes after i do OI the angle im facing before cancelling OI is the wrong way. i also usually am over the black patch or on the hump and i go to the right corner z targer wall turn 180 z target get to edge of door let go of z spam a. i almost always end up at the deku cutscene. i got it twice today but am not sure what i did different.

I'm thinking about getting the hylian shield for my practicing. wii VC + burnt deku shield + no save states make me want to punch a hole through my tv

could anyone possibly explain the frame adjustments for me on ganondoor over the hump? i use the roll slash method and usually am at 4, 3, or 2 i go over the black patch on the hump, crossing over the black patch, or cross the hump under the black patch.

it seems like i only get it on 3. i usually go to the top right corner z targer the wall 180 z target and then get to the edge of the door. 8/10 i get deku cutscene the other times is ganons castle. i rarely go right back to the basement room

How do you side-hop and then jump-slash in the direction you side-hopped in?

EDIT:  Also, I just did ganondoor after double KO'ing on Gohma, and it seems to have worked except it's bugged, as if I had reset the game and thus the cutscene modifier.  Except I didn't.  Does saving the game act as its own cutscene bychance?  Otherwise what else could have caused this?

EDIT:  Also, I just did ganondoor after double KO'ing on Gohma, and it seems to have worked except it's bugged, as if I had reset the game and thus the cutscene modifier.  Except I didn't.  Does saving the game act as its own cutscene bychance?  Otherwise what else could have caused this?

Cutscene pointer, not modifier.

There are two important components to wrong warping: the cutscene pointer, and the data that the cutscene pointer is actually pointing to (i.e. a cutscene).

The cutscene pointer is set when viewing a certain type of cutscene. The bulk of the cutscenes that set the cutscene pointer before being played are listed here (http://zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/wrongwarp/cutscene-pointer-values) but to give you the short version, there are only two likely cutscene pointer values to get when performing Ganondoor:

  • Deku Tree Intro Cutscene
  • Title Screen Cutscene (really only the one part in Hyrule Field as the other parts require manipulation to get as a last cutscene)

The only way a different cutscene pointer could be set would be if you were to enter the Deku Tree, triggering the Deku Tree Intro, then leave and go to other parts of the world. A fairly unlikely scenario.

Now according to my theories on wrong warping...

Saving, Dying, Watching Gohma's fight, puzzle stuff do not set the cutscene pointer value. They can in some instances change what value the cutscene pointer is set to, but these cutscenes happen to load in the same spot in memory every time so they don't.

Thus what remains is the data that the cutscene pointers point to.

If you watched the Deku Tree Intro Cutscene last (cutscene pointer is pointed to that cutscene), then the outcome of a successful ganondoor wrong warp will always be the same because the cutscene pointer ends up pointing to the same set of data each time. That is to say that if one outcome happens on version x, that outcome will always occur with version x, and an outcome on version y will always occur in version y, but outcome x isn't necessarily the same as outcome y.

If you save and quit or reload a file from a save, you'll end up with the Title Screen Cutscene. This cutscene sets the cutscene pointer such it points to a spot in ram where files related to pausing will load in some cases. This how the pause trick came to be discovered.

I can do the wrong warp fairly consistent, however, sometimes the camera screws me over and I have no clue why.

Here is an example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2QEWgsrqFI#t=1160

As you can see the camera ends up on the wrong side of Link, and I have to run out and try again.

I really would like to know what I am doing wrong with my setup when that happens, because it's doing it way to often for me.

Probably, gonna try it out when I get home. Thank you!

I kind of assumed the opposite, that I wasn't in the corner enough, so that made it even worse.  ;D

I started learning any% yesterday and when I try to do Ganondoor, I'm early almost every single time.
I'm trying to follow this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAOfhr4US2s
Here's a video of me trying, the second attempt looked decent to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guVSXdly5go&feature=youtu.be

I'm using Project64 2.2.03 and OoT J 1.0

Best way to learn wrong warp is with Memory Hack Software. You check the variable linked with the WW timer and you check if it matches with what it is supposed to be. More info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTucNxwP5bw

I'd assume the reason you failed the WW in the video is because:
-You were not holding left after the nut. (Easily detectable with a Controller Input Viewer)
-You did not align with the wall correctly for the U-turn. You need to hold forward when targetting the wall.

Wow, the memory hacking software is an excellent suggestion!

If I weren't holding left after throwing the nut it should have made me slower not faster, so that can't be it on it's own.
The alignment with the wall is obvious to me now that you point it out. I wondered why the tutorial said to target the wall I feel dumb now...

Wait just a few more frames after the camera stops rotating around the warp before canceling Ocarina Items. Then, right after you press the button to throw the Deku Nut and target, try pausing the game, switching to straight left, then unpausing.

Also, you should use Project64 1.7 or 1.6, as the 2.x series have timing issues with the N64 Zeldas.

If you want, here is my tutorial video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT2brg_4yM0&t=0m20s
