Title: Wondering where to start
Post by: risingCale on March 05, 2013, 03:12:41 PM
I finally got my own gamecube copy of Twilight Princess, as opposed to borrowing from a friend, and was wondering where to start. I learned BiT yesterday while watching Venick stream, and had been trying to learn Sword and Shield skip while watching ChaosLink. I had actually gotten into TP a long time ago when Pheenoh did 100% runs all the time. I'm just curious as to what would be the best route to start with is.

I think any% no s+q would be the best for a beginner.

Friend of mine learned that category recently by watching Jiano's run on SDA and some streamers on Twitch. I have no idea how outdated Jiano's run on SDA is, but the tricks used in the run didn't seem too bad. Also, you wouldn't really want to learn a game and immediately use all the newest, fastest and hardest strats.

Well I can get BiT. Sword and Shield Skip is giving me issues. Mostly the LJA. Other than that, the rest of it seems pretty okay. I got up to Forest Temple. But didn't know where to go after that. XD But I'll grab Jiano's run from SDA since it seems as good a place to start as any.

Thanks. :)

I actually used Dolphin to practice Sword and Shield skip because Save States allow me to start right as the Bulblin is passing the bridge. I've been trying to use Mofat's setup, but it just doesn't work for me. I might try to TAS it to help me see exact frames. Been trying to watch more runs to see how speedrunners do it, but I'll probably watch one of Pheenoh's old runs of Jiano's SDA run and use those strats to practice and then come back to Shield and Sword skip.

I do like this more than Majora's Mask, even though MM is easier for me.

It's some fake category that a few people do,Where you have to gate clip, then get across the bridge into the loading zone into faron woods.

Bridge% is spiteful. Regardless, I'm apparently incapable of following any SASS guides. :/ I'm just doing something wrong.

lol, how can you call that bridge% when you skip all the good bridges (Kakariko, Eldin, Hylia)?

that would be bridge 100%

Because only one bridge matters. You know. One Bridge to rule them all? One Bridge to bind them?

Whatever you choose, I don't recommend EMS, it's a big Red Herring. It's a fun glitch to mess around with, but you end up using crazy technical tricks to clean up the mess. It is possible to gain Iza's bomb bag by clearing the rocks with the Gale Boomerang and the lent bombs, and you can later get infinite bomb arrows to save Ilia and get the Zora Armor.

Later, you can use the Spinner to clip into the Goron Mines. In the end, EMS is a fun glitch to learn, and it forces you to do all the technical hardmode tricks to get it all sorted.

However it's your pick, if you want to jump into the hard stuff, EMS is the best hard route.

#EMSiseasy

EMS isn't terribly bad if you get the hang of it, but to clean up the mess later is unnecessarily pointless to have it in the first place, not unless it comes with some way to use it in a breakthrough.

Posting here because I'm also wondering how best to start?

I'm definitely going to play this game casually a few times (I've beaten it 3 times in my life but want to familiarize myself with it more).

But then, where do you begin? I definitely know any% no S+Q is my calling, but beyond that, what's best to learn first as far as tricks/skips go?

Practise boomerang LJA spots (the timing and position is different in most of them) Sword and Shield skip LJA, EMS, do a couple of dungeons and twilight area runs so you can practise some tricks etc.

I don't think there's a real TP IRC channel unless you count #pheenoh...

Btw, do you have the GC or Wii version? I assume the former.

GC of course. And thanks, I'll do that!
