Title: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on April 17, 2012, 08:53:45 PM
Is there anyone who isn't to good at doing major glitches and sequence breaks, but would want to have a race for practise?

Post by: Norkix on April 17, 2012, 08:59:12 PM
I'd be in. I've never done an any%, I think it would be fun. The only thing is that I can't stream or record in good quality, and I have no idea if that's required. If it's not. the only thing I'd have to do is remember the date and time of the race.

Post by: Hornlitz on April 17, 2012, 10:24:47 PM
I'd like to do it, but I don't know if I have much time .
Also, what game would it be?

Post by: Norkix on April 17, 2012, 10:52:38 PM
I'm limited to OoT and MM. All I have til summer is an N64 and a 3DS.

Just go to speedrunslive.com or #speedrunslive irc, racing is actual very casual, and the community is friendly and easy to get started in! Racing is a great way to practice, and in OOT and MM some of the random-generated objectives like bingo and cosmosis are great for learning new tricks! Thats how I learn stuff! :)

Streaming is not required for 99% of races, but if you have a suspect time, you could get asked to provide proof. But most likely this wont happen to you if you dont expect to set any amazing times.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on April 18, 2012, 08:00:51 PM
I'd say we should practise an any% for OoT, maybe Friday or Saturday evening.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on April 18, 2012, 11:12:11 PM
I can't do OOT. I don't actually have it. I could if I got it on VC, but I doubt that'll happen. I could do MM though.

Okay, so MM then? awesome, I just have to get my N64 back from my buddy and make a speedruns live account! Then just start practicing. This should definitely be part way through spring break.

Spring break?!? That was back in march... Do you mean something like May long weekend? Or is your spring break way later than ours?

Title: Re: Amateur Race

My spring break starts Monday. I'm in New Hampshire, U.S. If no one else has vacation next week, I guess we could do it next weekend...

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on April 19, 2012, 10:53:23 PM
I'm in Canada, so I don't have a vacation next week, although next weekend will be fine. What day and time works best?

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on April 19, 2012, 11:34:50 PM
Well, for me actually this saturday afternoon would be best. Actually, now that I think about it, I can't do the saturday after, so...
I can drop out of this one if we can't find a time that works.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 10, 2012, 10:43:58 PM
We never actually managed to do this, so perhaps we can try it this weekend? I got a new TV and it has too much input lag though, so I'm prepared for a time over three or four hours DX

LOL^ I need to set up my n64 again...cant find a controller though....but I might join you guys (of course I suck at MM so I probably wont xD)

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 10, 2012, 11:43:23 PM
It all depends on how much homework I have to do this weekend, but if it's not too much, then by all means, I'd love to join! Also, a couple weeks ago I bought OoT for VC, so I could race on that game now too :P

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Norkix on September 11, 2012, 02:27:18 AM
I now have MM on VC, so I can join as well. However, I still only have OoT for N64, and my buddy recently reacquired that from me to play SM64, so... If it's OoT I can't race.

Maybe we could race something that doesn't really have a lot of exploitable glitches and sequence breaks, like Minish Cap. We could do like a race to the first element or something.

If we end up going with MM, I think we should do something short, like a 10 mask race or bingo.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 11, 2012, 04:26:15 AM
I've never played Minish Cap, so I would have to get it for an emulator, and I would prefer doing something on a console (mainly because if we're doing this race on SRL, I would need to stream if were on an emulator, but I wouldn't on a console). But I'd be okay with MM, OoT, TP, or SS.

I could do Minish Cap, I have an emulator on my Wii and a cap card to stream with, although it wouldn't be fair to you. I've never attempted a glitch in TP, and I hate SS, Norkix can't play OoT so I think we should just do Majora's Mask. It does have many glitches, but I am horrible at conserving explosives, especially considering I can barely ISG anymore with input lag, so I won't be getting anything under three hours with all the trips to the bomb shop I'll have to make DX We could also try Bingo  :-\

You should join anyway, I need someone else who is going to fail badly XD

Lol that's me who would be failing miserably. :P

Also, can someone explain the rules of this 'Bingo' race? I've never done/watched one before, so I don't knoe :/

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Pedalpowertoast on September 11, 2012, 02:50:29 PM
In a bingo race there is a 5 x 5 grid with things like get three maps, get ocarina, get a medallion etc. So what you have to do is choose a grid and complete all the requirements. Theres a vid somewhere in youtube demonstrating how this works.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 11, 2012, 10:41:43 PM
Alright thanks :P

I'd be okay with a Bingo race or something like that, as long as it doesn't take me more than 3.5 hours.

Also, what time should this be done? For me, Sunday might be better, because my family doesn't usually want me to have homework for Sundays, but I still should be able to do Saturday as well. On either day, somewhere around 1:30/2:00 PM Mountain Time would be good for me. No earlier than that would work for Sunday, but Saturday I can try to be flexible if that doesn't work for others.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 12, 2012, 04:58:39 AM
I have no idea how to convert Eastern Time into Mountain Time o.O but I would probably prefer Saturday, considering I can stay up later without worrying about being too tired at school. I'd like to do either an any% or a Bingo run, although Bingo can take even longer than an any% depending on the card you get. Would you be able to generate a few a pick one that is challenging (for us n00bs) but not going to take too long? I'd prefer it if you can get one with a boss battle in it, just since they're so fun to fight XD

One does not simply choose the bingo card...

I'm pretty sure that you tell RaceBot it's a bingo and it chooses a seed at random. Personally, I'm not sure we should do bingo because it requires obscure route planning in MM. Of course, that may just be me being selfish ;D

Anyway, I was thinking we could do an idea I've had for a while. You start with a new file and proceed to get all three transformation masks as fast as possible. The route for this is pretty obvious, so it would really test your basic MM speedrunning skills like superslides and hovering.

I'd like Saturday, and I believe that 2 PM MT is 4 PM EST, which should work out for me as long as my homework is done, lol.

I won't be able to stream. I hope that won't be a problem if I win (and I'm not saying I will). I know you get challenged if your time is suspect, and my Blaziken isn't... wait, wrong game...

Anyway, has this type of thing been done before and there's a record? I don't want my first race to be challenged...

Just trying to throw this out here... OOT and MM bingo races happen multiple times a day. They are very noob-friendly because you can choose your own row to avoid things you dont know too well. Chances are that at any time you get in Speedrunslive there will be an OOT or MM bingo race happening, and if not just ask and somebody will probably be up for it. Its super casual and friendly!

Here's an example OOT Bingo card: http://speedrunslive.com/tools/oot-bingo/?seed=389296 The rules are all on the right! Also, dont count on breaking 2 hours on your first bingo, and at first I would suggest looking for things you know how to do reliably rather than things that are fast but you arent sure you can do.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 12, 2012, 07:37:50 PM
I kind of like the idea of racing to get the first three transformation masks, sounds fairly easy and would not take long at all. Perhaps we could do that and Bingo?

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Norkix on September 12, 2012, 07:53:35 PM
I may not have time for both, but I can try. And thanks for clarifying on the bingo, stabled.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 12, 2012, 10:20:33 PM
I think the 3 masks thing is a good idea, and I'd probably be up for a bingo after the 3 masks too if we were doing both. (And if I have time, which I should)

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Norkix on September 12, 2012, 10:32:43 PM
Okay, so what's everyone playing on? I'm on VC. If anyone is on N64, should VC people give them like a 15-second head start? Especially since this is a n00b race... Of course if that just isn't done, more power to the N64 players if they win! Because I'm quite sure the lag will make a difference in the mask race. Probably not the bingo though...

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 13, 2012, 02:02:02 AM
I'm on VC. And is everyone good for Saturday at 2PM MT/4PM EST?

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 13, 2012, 02:25:19 AM
I'm also on VC, I think I'm good for that time. I'm kind of wondering what route to use although I don't think it matters much.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Norkix on September 13, 2012, 05:12:32 AM
All right, seems like we're all on VC. I would think the route would be pretty obvious. I'm not going to say anything though, especially not about what I'm going to start practicing tomorrow that will practically guarantee my victory... >=D mwahahahahahaha...

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 13, 2012, 09:50:06 PM
Well I'm going to practice my superslides... muhahahah?

Title: Re: Amateur Race

Time for me to practice Bomb Hovering :/

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 14, 2012, 02:25:07 AM
It took me forever to finally be able to hover using bombs, before I had to use chus. Now I need to practice getting ISG though, I used to be able to do it perfectly every time on my old TV, now it take me a crapload of bombs >.<

Title: Re: Amateur Race

if your doing it on VC (wii) I can join right now but Ill be playing blind cause I never actually conquered the game before xD I only played OoT when I was younger :'(

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 15, 2012, 01:00:51 AM
XD You could still join, just watch a couple videos on the game first to see what you're doing.

Title: Re: Amateur Race

I've never set up a race before, so I'm assuming I just go to Speed Runs Live and figure out how to use the race bot?

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Norkix on September 17, 2012, 01:45:43 AM
Guys I'm really sorry I missed it. I was just about to sit myself down and get on #srl when my parents called a mandatory surprise trip to the mall. I got a Kindom Hearts shirt. And nothing else.

Anyway, two questions: what were the rankings and can we do it again next week?

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 17, 2012, 02:21:00 PM
Sure, we can! A couple others joined, so here are the results:

1st    furyrising    00:37:33
2nd    implicit    00:42:16
3rd    hellomrjewman    00:46:00
4th    hornlitz    00:46:11

We also did a Bingo match:

1st    implicit    00:49:29
2nd    ace3df    01:19:03     "and on that day, we never got proofcall"
3rd    furyrising    01:27:55     "Epona Archery can burn"

Although Hornlitz was unable to join that one since he couldn't get his race file set up.

I look forward to playing with you both this weekend though  ;) Or sometime during the week if you're available.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 18, 2012, 12:57:15 AM
I have the race file set up now, so I could stay for the whole thing this time :P
And this next saturday at about 6:00PM Mountain time/8:00PM Eastern Time would be great for me, but I can try for the afternoon if the evening doesn't work for anyone else.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Implicit on September 18, 2012, 08:26:37 PM
Evening works fine, I have nothing better to do :P Do you guys both have Skype or something so it would be easier to contact you? I'd prefer if our Bingo match this Saturday had only us in it, that way we can get a bit of practice with out getting completely destroyed XD

My mom has Skype on her iPad, but I don't know if she'll let me use it...

Anyways, I just did a couple OoT3D races with benstephens1000, so I'm a little more familiar with the formula now. ;D I got second place in the first, forfeited the second and finished second on the last with a horrible time... Nonetheless, it was fun! Can't wait to race you guys this weekend!

I have skype on my iPod, so that can work. Just make sure you don't call me unless I say you can; last time, I ended up missing a race because my parents had a talk with me, so just wait until I say you can, if that was even your intention...

My skype name is Hornlitz, just in case it wasn't obvious enough...

I didn't really have intentions of calling (I hate webcam chats), it was more to notify you or something in case you didn't show up? I don't really even remember :P Anyway, maybe we can make it a bit earlier and have a race tomorrow and Friday and Saturday evenings? I love failing :D

Not allowed on Wii during week. Only weekends. :( Sorry. Also, made my own skype account and looking for contacts, so shoot me a request if you want.

Tomorrow afternoon isn't good for me, and depending on the amount of homework, tomorrow evening may not be a good day for me either. Friday afternoon should be good, bot not friday evening, and saturday I've already said. I get home from school at just before 4:00PM Mountain/6:00 Eastern, so just past 4/6 on friday would be good for me.

Also, I didn't mean webcam chats with skype, just the voice calls, but it's best for me if neither happen I guess.

And we are still doing MM?

Yes my Skype name is Norkix. I have the same profile picture as I do here as well, since I'm so original. (/sarcasm) Are you Implicit on Skype?

I would assume we are still doing MM, yes. That's what I've been looking forward to racing after all. :)

And you guys don't want to videochat? But that was one of the reasons I made a Skype account, so I could videochat with the people I'm racing with! Ugh... Whatever :'(

My Skype name is "TheOnlyMajora" (since I'm so obsessed with that game XD) and I might try a video chat at some point, we will see. Hopefully it doesn't mess up my stream too much though since my internet sucks and cannot handle Skype very well.

We should do some MM and some OoT Bingo as well, mix it up. Perhaps we can do the Transformation Mask Race (or maybe a race for 10 masks?) followed by MM Bingo and then OoT Bingo if we have enough time.

Title: Re: Amateur Race
Post by: Hornlitz on September 20, 2012, 11:47:17 PM
I think we should change it up a bit and go for 10 masks. And yeah, I think we should do a MM and maybe OoT bingo, but please, if we're doing an OoT bingo, do a short card. I tried a normal OoT bingo last saturday, and I wasn't able to do it. I think they practically require you to know how to do RBA and the DoT skip, which I doubt any of us can do :P
